Physical and emotional abuse in romantic relationships: motivation for perpetration among college women.

Intimate partner violence is extremely common in college samples. To inform prevention and intervention efforts, understanding the motivation for engaging in partner aggression is critically important. The predominant view in the domestic violence field has been that women's use of intimate partner violence occurs in the context of self-defense. However, there has been a dearth of solid evidence to support this claim. The present study explored the motivations for the perpetration of minor and severe physical aggression and for three types of emotional abuse (restrictive engulfment, denigratio

Beyond expectations: exploring the multifaceted role of positive gossip in organizations.

INTRODUCTION: Gossip is a fundamental aspect of human communication that facilitates the expression of attitudes, beliefs, and opinions related to emotions. Within organizational settings, gossip frequently pertains to third parties who are not physically present and can be classified as either positive or negative based on its valence. This study focuses on positive gossip, specifically how it is perceived and experienced by employees as an organizational phenomenon. METHODS: The study employed a phenomenological approach, with data collected through in-depth interviews conducted in two dist

Medical diagnosis through semiotics. Giving meaning to the sign.

Physicians are engaged in incorporating quantitative methods for making clinical decisions into their practices. An acquaintance with semiotics, the doctrine of signs, may complement this project. A sign stands for something. We communicate indirectly through signs, and by interpreting what signs mean we make sense of our world and diagnose and understand our patients. Thus, through association and inference, we transform flowers into love, Othello into jealousy, and staring eyes into thyrotoxicosis. Characteristically in diagnosis, beginning with an unstable inference, we test and otherwise a

Risk of death or life-threatening injury for women with children not sired by the abuser.

Women who are abused by their male intimate partners incur many costs, ranging in severity from fleeting physical pain to death. Previous research has linked the presence of children sired by a woman's previous partner to increased risk of woman abuse and to increased risk of femicide. The current research extends this work by securing data from samples of 111 unabused women, 111 less severely abused women, 128 more severely abused women, and 26 victims of intimate partner femicide from the Chicago Women's Health Risk Study to document an ordinal trend in the risk of experiencing more severe f

Why battering during pregnancy?

This exploratory study was designed to determine the reasons men might beat their female partners during pregnancy from the perspectives of women who had experienced this form of violence. Seventy-nine battered women were recruited by newspaper advertisement and bulletin board postings to take part in a larger study of women's responses to relationship problems. Women battered in their relationships were asked if they had ever been beaten during pregnancy. The 27 (34%) women who had a pregnancy with the abusive partner as the father and had experienced physical abuse during the pregnancy were

Delusional (paranoid) disorders: etiologic and taxonomic considerations. II. A possible relationship between delusional and affective disorders.

Paranoid (delusional) disorders are usually thought to overlap with schizophrenic disorders, and there may be a continuum, especially with paranoid schizophrenia. There is also some recent evidence of an overlap with affective disorders. This article refers to the author's series of monodelusional disorders, emphasizing certain mood concomitants, and discussing the implications of these for delusional disorders in general.

Individual differences in envy experienced through perspective-taking involves functional connectivity of the superior frontal gyrus.

Envy is the painful or resentful awareness of another's advantage combined with a desire to possess that same advantage. Recent neuroscientific research has begun to shed light on the brain regions that process the experience of envy, including regions of the prefrontal cortex involved in emotional processing and social cognition. It is still unclear, however, which regions of the brain are functionally connected during the experience of envy. We recorded functional neuroimaging data while inducing simulated envy in participants, experienced through a perspective-taking hypothetical scenario t

Differential environmental factors in anorexia nervosa: a sibling pair study.

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have explored differences in psychosocial and familial factors between women who develop anorexia nervosa and those who do not. However, these studies have generally used between-group comparisons. This study looks at the environmental factors which may be antecedents of anorexia nervosa looking at sister pairs where one had anorexia nervosa and the other did not. DESIGN: A paired design was used to compare anorexic women with an unaffected sister on a number of background variables, including sibling interaction, parental care, peer group characteristics and othe

The dynamics of interpretation.

The patient's productions are a dynamic record of the conflicts of the past as they are recapitulated and re-experienced in the present. Much can be learned by closely studying the immediate effect of the analyst's interventions. Interpretation, especially of transference phenomena, will upset the equilibrium which has been effected and will enable the patient to understand how unconscious fantasies from the past continue to influence his perception and reactions in the present. Interpretation is a continuing process, unfolding in logical sequence. Transference may be an expression of the pati

Vitriolage in india: analysis by a burn surgeon.

Acid throwing (vitriolage) is a form of violent assault. It is described as an act of throwing acid or corrosives on the body of a person with the intention of injuring or disfiguring them. It is a crime like no other and represents the amalgamation of social evils like patriarchy, gender bias, disdain for the laws of the land, and individual deficiencies like jealousy, anger and sexism. Its incidence has increased over the years and it is soundly entrenched in our society. On the brighter side, surgical care has improved, laws have evolved and, most importantly, society is now aware and is pl

Mentalization of complex emotions in borderline personality disorder: The impact of parenting and exposure to trauma on the performance in a novel cartoon-based task.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by a range of interpersonal difficulties, which are, in part, related to adverse experiences during childhood. Unresponsive parenting and traumatization may cause functional impairment of mentalization, i.e. the ability to reflect upon own and others' mental states. However, the relationship of poor parenting, trauma and mentalization in BPD has not exhaustively been studied. Thirty patients diagnosed with BPD and 30 matched control subjects were asked to sequence a novel cartoon-based mentalization task involving complex emotions such as

Risk factors for severe intimate partner violence and violence-related injuries among women in India.

Relying on an ecological framework, we examined risk factors for severe physical intimate partner violence (IPV) and related injuries among a nationally representative sample of women (N = 67,226) in India. Data for this cross-sectional study were derived from the 2005-2006 India National Family Health Survey, a nationally representative household-based health surveillance system. Logistic regression analyses were used to generate the study findings. We found that factors related to severe physical IPV and injuries included low or no education, low socioeconomic status, rural residence, greate

Extreme Overvalued Belief and the Legacy of Carl Wernicke.

Individuals with extreme overvalued beliefs often carry out abhorrent and inexplicable acts of violence. They hold odd and bizarre beliefs that are shared by others in their culture or subculture. This creates a dilemma for the forensic psychiatrist because the definition of delusion may not be adequate. We discuss the evolution of the term "overvalued idea" first described in a forensic context by neuropsychiatrist Carl Wernicke in 1892. The overvalued idea is invoked in British scholarship as a definition for beliefs seen in anorexia nervosa, morbid jealousy, paranoid litigious states, and o

The unique social sense of puerperium: Increased empathy and Schadenfreude in parents of newborns.

Pregnancy and puerperium are typified by marked biobehavioral changes. These changes, which are traceable in both mothers and fathers, play an important role in parenthood and may modulate social cognition abilities. However, the latter effects remain notably unexplored in parents of newborns (PNs). To bridge this gap, we assessed empathy and social emotions (envy and Schadenfreude) in 55 PNs and 60 controls (childless healthy participants without a romantic relationship or sexual intercourse in the previous 48 hours). We used facial electromyography to detect physiological signatures of socia

Affect integration, metacognitions, and early maladaptive schemas as predictors of outcome in cognitive and metacognitive therapies for social anxiety disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Few reliable patient characteristics have emerged as significant predictors of outcomes for Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). This study aimed to explore whether affect integration, metacognitions, and maladaptive schemas could serve as predictors of therapeutic outcomes for patients with SAD. Relationships between these psychological constructs and baseline SAD symptomatology were also examined. METHODS: Eighty-eight patients across three sites participated in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Metacognitive Therapy (MCT) for SAD in inpatient or outpatient clinics. Measures of pre

'Struggling to be the alpha': sources of tension and intimate partner violence in same-sex relationships between men.

In countries such as the USA, gay and bisexual men experience high rates of intimate partner violence. However, little is known about the factors that contribute to this form of violence. In this study, we examine gay and bisexual men's perceptions of sources of tension in same-sex male relationships and how these may contribute to intimate partner violence. We conducted seven focus-group discussions with 64 gay and bisexual men in Atlanta, GA. Focus groups examined men's reactions to the short-form revised Conflicts Tactics Scale to determine if each item was considered to be intimate partner

Forensic psychiatry in nineteenth-century Saxony: the case of Woyzeck.

In contrast to other areas of psychiatry, little work has been done on the history of forensic psychiatry, and such work is especially scarce regarding the first half of the 19th century, when forensic psychiatry began to develop together with the neurosciences. One newly discovered archival source bears immediate witness to the genesis of forensic psychiatry and is presented for the first time in this study. That source helps us to better understand, in particular, one of the most important cases in 19th-century German forensic psychiatry - namely, that of Johann Christian Woyzeck, the murder
