Individual characteristics in occupational accidents due to imbalance: a case-control study of the employees of a railway company.

BACKGROUND: Falls are frequent occupational accidents, and are responsible for a significant amount of lost working time and, more importantly, for a high mortality. The factors involved in falling mechanisms can be of external or individual origin, the latter being less well identified. AIMS: To assess the relations between certain individual characteristics and occupational accidents due to imbalance. METHODS: A total of 427 male employees, who had been victims of at least one occupational accident with sick leave due to imbalance (cases) and 427 controls were recruited among the employees

Knowledge, attitudes, treatment practices, and health behaviors of nurses regarding blood cholesterol and cardiovascular disease.

Knowledge, attitudes, and practice patterns concerning cholesterol and heart disease were evaluated in a stratified, random sample of 206 registered nurses at a major academic medical center in New York City. Virtually all nurses were convinced of the importance of diet in reducing heart disease risk, and most (78%) agreed that nutrition counseling should be their responsibility. Although only 19% reported that they were currently counseling, many more felt prepared to counsel about diet or drug therapy (43%). Nurses who were likely to counsel were those working in general medicine, those who

Livelihood implications of dietary shifts to animal-source food alternatives: a scoping review.

Although dietary shifts from animal-source foods (ASFs) to alternatives (Alt-ASFs) could considerably affect livelihoods in food supply chains, the effects will likely vary by the type of Alt-ASFs. In this Review we identified 45 studies, including descriptive analysis of the present state of the sector and modelling studies of future trends. Key findings indicate that cell-based foods would likely reduce overall employment opportunities, while favouring high-skilled workers in high-income countries, although job quality might improve. Shifts towards plant-based foods might have small net empl

The impact of team psychological safety, occupational coping efficacy, and job satisfaction on the job performance of operating room nurses: an empirical study based on structural equation modeling.

BACKGROUND: The quality and efficiency of operating room nurses' work are directly related to patient safety, surgical success rates, and the overall medical quality of the hospital. In the context of a global shortage of nursing human resources, enhancing the job performance of operating room nurses is critically important. Team psychological safety, occupational coping efficacy, and job satisfaction are important factors affecting the job performance of operating room nurses. However, limited research has examined the interrelationships among these factors specifically within this specialize

The role and position of palliative care nurses within the Dutch healthcare system: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Generalists in palliative care and professionals with specialized expertise, including palliative care nurses, achieve high-quality palliative care. To strengthen their role, it is essential to understand the tasks palliative care nurses perform and their position within the organizations. We aim to accomplish this understanding and explore facilitators and barriers to taking on the role as specialized nurses from both the nurses’ and managers’ perspectives. METHODS: A sequential mixed-method design combined an online survey, followed up by five focus groups. Analysis involved desc

Mesothelioma Risk among Construction Workers According to Job Title: Data from the Italian Mesothelioma Register.

BACKGROUND: An increased risk of mesothelioma has been reported in various countries for construction workers. The Italian National Mesothelioma Registry, from 1993 to 2018, reported exposure exclusively in the construction sector in 2310 cases. We describe the characteristics of these cases according to job title. METHODS: We converted into 18 groups the original jobs (N=338) as reported by ISTAT codes ('ATECO 91'). The exposure level was attributed at certain, probable and possible in accordance with the qualitative classification of exposure as reported in the Registry guidelines. Descript

Strategic threat management: an exploration of nursing strategies in the pediatric intensive care unit.

Part of the work of a critical care nurse is to manage the threats that arise that could impede efficient and effective job performance. Nurses manage threats by employing various strategies to keep performance high and workload manageable. We investigated strategic threat management by using the Threat-Strategy Interview. Threats frequently involved technology, staff, or organizational components. The threats were managed by a toolbox of multifaceted strategies, the most frequent of which involved staff-, treatment- (patient + technology), examination- (patient + clinician), and patient-orien

The relationship between school innovation climate and teacher innovation behavior in higher vocational colleges: the chain mediating role of teacher job crafting and creative self-efficacy.

BACKGROUND: Teacher innovation behavior is essential to improving instructional quality and talent cultivation in higher vocational education, yet the psychological mechanisms linking school innovation climate to such behavior remain insufficiently understood. Drawing on the Job Demands-Resources framework, this study examined whether job crafting and creative self-efficacy sequentially mediate the relationship between school innovation climate and teacher innovation behavior. METHODS: A questionnaire survey was conducted among 603 teachers from higher vocational colleges between May and June

Bayesian Hierarchical Modelling of Individual Expert Assessments in the Development of a General-Population Job-Exposure Matrix.

The CANJEM job-exposure matrix compiles expert evaluations of 31 673 jobs from four population-based case-control studies conducted in Montreal. For each job, experts had derived indices of intensity, frequency, and probability of exposure to 258 agents. CANJEM summarizes the exposures assigned to jobs into cells defined by occupation/industry, agent, and period. Some cells may, however, be less populated than others, resulting in uncertain estimates. We developed a modelling framework to refine the estimates of sparse cells by drawing on information available in adjacent cells. Bayesian hiera

Hair cortisol concentration is unaffected by basic military training, but related to sociodemographic and environmental factors.

The analysis of hair cortisol concentrations (HCC) is a promising new biomarker for retrospective measurement of chronic stress. The effect of basic military training (BMT) on chronic stress has not yet been reported. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of 10-week BMT on HCC, while further exploring the role of known and novel covariates. Young healthy male recruits of the Swiss Army participated twice, 10 weeks apart, in data collection (1st examination: n = 177; 2nd examination: n = 105). On two occasions, we assessed HCC, perceived stress and different candidate variables th

Inter-rater reliability of assessed prenatal maternal occupational exposures to solvents, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and heavy metals.

Because direct measurements of past occupational exposures are rarely available in population-based case-control studies, exposure assessment of job histories by multiple expert raters is frequently used; however, the subjective nature of this method makes measuring reliability an important quality control step. We evaluated inter-rater reliability of 7729 retrospective jobs reported in the National Birth Defects Prevention Study. Jobs were classified as exposed, unexposed, or exposure unknown by two independent industrial hygienists; exposed jobs were further evaluated for intensity, frequenc

Work Factors, Work-Family Conflict, the Theory of Planned Behaviour and Healthy Intentions: A Cross-Cultural Study.

The present study examined the roles of work factors (i.e. job demands and job resources), work-family conflicts and culture on predictors of healthy intentions (fruit and vegetable consumption, low-fat diet and physical activity) within the framework of the theory of planned behaviour (TPB). Employees from the United Kingdom (N = 278) and Malaysia (N = 325) participated in the study. Results indicated that higher job demands were significantly related to lower intentions to eat a low-fat diet. Women reported higher intentions to eat a low-fat diet than men did, while participants from the Uni
