Validation of the Revised Strain Index for Predicting Risk of Incident Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in a Prospective Cohort.

The Revised Strain Index (RSI), a model that quantifies physical exposure from individual hand/wrist exertions, tasks, and multi-task jobs, was used to quantify exposure for 1372 incident-eligible manufacturing, service and healthcare workers. Workers were followed for an average of 2.5 years (maximum 6 years) and had an average carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) incidence rate of 4.6 per 100 person-years. Exceeding the a-priori RSI limit of 10.0 showed increased risk of CTS (Hazard Ratio (HR) = 1.45, 95% CI: 1.11-1.91, p = 0.01). There also was a dose-response relationship using proposed low (RSI ≤

[Mental health of hospital nurses].

The mental health status of 79 woman hospital nurses and 69 woman office workers with less than three years of service were examined with the "mental disorder" scale and the "loss of morale" scale in a cross-sectional survey. The mentally disordered status characterized by "neurasthenia symptoms" and "feeling job hard," which is similar to "burn-out syndrome," was observed in nurses especially in their first year of service. Multivariate analysis shows that their mental health status is mainly associated with the severity of job and their stress coping behavior. When these confounding variable

Hyper-Immunoglobulin E Syndrome and Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Lower Lip: A Case Report.

Hyperimmunoglobulin E syndrome is a Primary Immuno-deficiency Syndrome (PIDS) characterized by high serum immunoglobulin E, eczema rash and recurrent sinopulmonary and skin infections. In this report, we present a case of squamous cell carcinoma of the lower lip in a young patient with Hyper IgE syndrome. The patient had initially developed a chronic non-healing ulcer and a biopsy done revealed a squamous cell carcinoma. Immunodeficiency has been recognized as an essential risk factor for cancer through immune dysregulation and defective immunosurveillance.

Association between nasal polyposis, Dubowitz syndrome and hyper-IgE syndrome.

Dubowitz syndrome is a rare, autosomal recessive disorder characterized by intrauterine growth retardation, short stature, microcephaly, distinct facial dysmorphism, and psychomotoric retardation. The hyper-immunoglobulin E (hyper-IgE or Job syndrome) is a primary immunodeficiency characterized by recurrent staphylococcal abscesses, recurrent cyst-forming pneumonia, and an elevated serum IgE level of >2000 IU/ml. We present the first case to our knowledge of an association between Dubowitz syndrome, hyper-IgE syndrome, and nasal polyposis (due to allergic fungal sinusitis) in a 14-year-old gir

Autosomal recessive hyperimmunoglobulin E syndrome: a distinct disease entity.

OBJECTIVE: The autosomal-dominant form of the hyperimmunoglobulin E syndrome (AD-HIES) has been described as a multisystem disorder including immune, skeletal, and dental abnormalities. Variants of AD-HIES are known but not well defined. METHODS: We evaluated 13 human immunodeficiency virus-seronegative patients from six consanguineous families with an autosomal-recessive form of hyperimmunoglobulin E syndrome (AR-HIES) and 68 of their relatives. RESULTS: Persons affected with AR-HIES presented with the classical immunologic findings of hyperimmunoglobulin E syndrome, including recurrent sta

Hyper-IgE syndrome. Presentation of three cases.

Three cases of Hyper-IgE syndrome are herein described, corresponding to patients aged six, twelve and 4 years, who from infancy, had suffered a variety of recurrent pulmonary infections, staphylococcal cold abscesses and chronic dermatitis. IgE counts were superior to 2.000 u/ml and eosinophilia surpassed 0.6 x 10(9) cells/l in all three cases. Deficits in the mytogen and chemotaxis responses were also seen. These patients were treated with I.V. gammaglobulin, anti-biotherapy and ascorbic acid. The possible physiopathology of this syndrome and its association with different alterations to pul

OBJECTIVES: This paper systematically reviews the work-relatedness of neck-shoulder disorders with associated physical findings. METHODS: Studies incorporating a physical examination were focused upon. Four detailed reviews were searched, and a systematic search of the MEDLINE, Embase BIDS, and Psychinfo databases was conducted until May 2006, the key words for the outcome and various occupational exposures being combined. The quality of each paper was rated by criteria related to study design, power, sampling methods, response rate, potential for bias, or confounding, and approaches to the a

Postoffer Pre-Placement Screening for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in Newly Hired Manufacturing Workers.

OBJECTIVE: We determined the predictive validity of a postoffer pre-placement (POPP) screen using nerve conduction velocity studies (NCV) to identify future cases of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). METHODS: A cohort of 1648 newly hired manufacturing production workers underwent baseline NCS, and were followed for 5 years. RESULTS: There was no association between abnormal POPP NCV results and incident CTS. Varying NCV diagnostic cut-offs did not improve predictive validity. Workers in jobs with high hand/wrist exposure showed greater risk of CTS than those in low exposed jobs (relative risk 2.

[The hypothenar hammer syndrome].

The hypothenar hammer syndrome (HHS) is a rare form of secondary Raynaud's phenomenon in workers who frequently use the ulnar side of the palm as a hammer. Clinically the patient with HHS shows neurologic symptoms such as paresthesia, numbness and pain and signs of vascular insufficiency such as coldness, pallor, discoloration and blanching of the affected ulnar sided fingers. The diagnosis is verified by angiography, showing thrombosis or aneurysm of the distal ulnar artery. We report on the treatment and outcome of 5 patients with HHS. All patients were painfree after treatment. But with the

Words on fire: Nurses' communication attitudes in the burnout equation.

Nursing professionals are exposed to stressful situations. One of them could be related to how they communicate with patients and their families. However, literature on the role of communication in occupational stress is scarce. There seems to be no consensus as to whether communication is a job demand, a consequence of stress or could even act as a mediator between the stress process. The aim of this study was to discuss the role of attitudes towards communication with the patient in the stress process in nurses. The sample consisted of 193 nurses recruited from four public hospitals in the V

Assessment of Non-physical User Violence and Burnout in Primary Health Care Professionals. The Modulating Role of Job Satisfaction.

INTRODUCTION: Growing concern about workplace violence shows the need for an evaluation in specific contexts in order to identify the particularities of each professional group. The health sector consists of a group of professionals with high exposure to violence, specially from users. There are differences depending on the professional category or unit in which the professional works. In this regard, Primary Health Care (PHC) is characterized by a personalized and continuous patient treatment over time, which is not exempt from cases of violence. Among the commonly studied consequences of the

Greek anaesthesiologists' post-traumatic stress syndrome in the post COVID-19 era: An observational, multicenter, cross-sectional study from COVID-19 referral, university/tertiary hospitals.

Anaesthesiologists actively involved with COVID-19 are at increased risk for post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSS). We assessed the PTSD and possible determinants of anaesthesiologists in COVID-19 referral hospitals in the post-COVID-19 era with the validated PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5) and the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ). A multicenter cross-sectional survey was conducted among anaesthesiologists working in the 7 COVID-19 referral university/tertiary hospitals during November 2022 (post-COVID-19 era) in Greece. Carpal tunnel syndrome among Manitoba workers: Results from the Manitoba Occupational Disease Surveillance System.

BACKGROUND: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is associated with occupational high-force repetitive tasks and vibration. This project examines the relationship between CTS and work to: (1) identify jobs and industries with increased CTS risk; (2) explore whether there is a sex difference in the risk of CTS after controlling for occupation; and (3) determine whether any observed relationships persist after excluding Workers Compensation Board (WCB) accepted time-loss CTS claims. METHODS: We linked 95.5% of time-loss WCB claims from 2006 to 2019 to provincial administrative health data. The cohort i

Consequences of parental burnout: Its specific effect on child neglect and violence.

Parental burnout is a specific syndrome resulting from enduring exposure to chronic parenting stress. It encompasses three dimensions: an overwhelming exhaustion related to one's parental role, an emotional distancing from one's children and a sense of ineffectiveness in one's parental role. This study aims to facilitate further identification of the consequences of parental burnout for the parents themselves, their spouses and their child(ren). In a sample of 1551 parents, we examined the relationship between parental burnout and seven possible consequences: escapism and suicidal thoughts, ad

A cross-sectional study of hand/wrist symptoms in female grocery checkers.

A questionnaire was mailed, in 1986, to 1,345 grocery checkers who belonged to one union local in south-central California. Among the 1,058 female respondents (82% response rate), we found a 12% prevalence of hand/wrist symptoms characteristic of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Symptom prevalence was positively associated with age, average work hours per week, years worked as a checker, and use of diuretics. The estimated effect of years worked as a checker was greater for younger subjects than for older subjects, in whom the association reversed, suggesting the selective loss of symptomatic wor
