Judgment Bias Responses in Domestic Dog Puppies at 60 Days of Age.

Judgment bias tasks are widely used to assess affective state in adult dogs but have rarely been applied before adoption age. To test whether a spatial version is viable, 82 puppies from 17 litters were tested at 60 days of age; 80 provided valid observations for analysis. After discrimination training, positive (P), negative (N) and ambiguous (A) locations were presented in up to three trials; latency to the bowl was recorded (30 s cut-off). Latencies from the first two trials (476 observations, 85 right-censored) were analyzed with mixed-effects Cox proportional hazards models including pupp

Explainable Artificial Intelligence in Assisted Reproductive Technology: Bridging Prediction and Clinical Judgment.

Background/Objectives: Artificial intelligence (AI) models are increasingly applied across the assisted reproductive technology (ART) workflow, including male-factor assessment, ovarian stimulation, endometrial receptivity evaluation, embryo selection and prediction of pregnancy outcomes. However, many systems remain difficult to interpret, raising concerns regarding transparency, clinical integration and patient communication. Explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) aims to address these limitations by making model behavior more accessible to clinicians and embryologists. This review aimed

Emotional Responses, Decision-Making, and Judgment in First-Time Hospital Lobby Experiences.

Background/ObjectivesThis study explores how individuals form first impressions when encountering a hospital lobby in the United States. It examines the roles of emotional responses and decision-making during brief environmental exposure, focusing on how sensory cues and emotional reactions shape visitor judgments.MethodsAs part of a larger mixed-methods project, this paper presents findings from the quantitative phase. Data were collected between June 2023 and February 2024 from participants visiting a hospital lobby in West Texas. Participants were randomly assigned to either a 5-min or unli

Tinkering with good care: Professional judgment and innovations in Danish nursing homes.

This article examines the COVID-19 pandemic as a large-scale natural experiment, presenting unique opportunities for reflection and insights into what constitutes 'good care' for front-line managers in Danish nursing homes. Using care and institutional theory, this exploratory study delves into how professional judgment and innovation redefine practices in nursing homes to provide quality care based upon qualitative questions in a national quantitative survey. Our analysis complements prevalent negative lessons on infections, high mortality, and moral distress by highlighting positive lessons

Abnormal Contingent Negative Variation Drifts During Facial Expression Judgment in Schizophrenia Patients.

Schizophrenia patients often show impaired facial expression recognition, which leads to difficulties in adaptation to daily life. However, it remains unclear whether the deficit is at the perceptual or higher cognitive level of facial emotion processing. Recent studies have shown that earlier face-evoked event-related potential (ERP) components such as N170 and P100 can effectively distinguish schizophrenia patients from healthy controls; however, findings for later waveforms are ambiguous. To clarify this point, in this study we compared electroencephalographic signals in schizophrenia patie

Moral judgment modulation by disgust priming via altered fronto-temporal functional connectivity.

Moral judgments are not just the product of conscious reasoning, but also involve the integration of social and emotional information. Irrelevant disgust stimuli modulate moral judgments, with individual sensitivity determining the direction and size of effects across both hypothetical and incentive-compatible experimental designs. We investigated the neural circuitry underlying this modulation using fMRI in 19 individuals performing a moral judgment task with subliminal priming of disgust facial expressions. Our results indicate that individual changes in moral acceptability due to priming co

Early Huntington's Disease: Impulse Control Deficits but Correct Judgment Regarding Risky Situations.

BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease (HD) patients show alterations in decision making tasks. However, it is still uncertain if these deficits are due to poor judgment regarding risky situations, or to impulse control deficits. OBJECTIVE: To elucidate whether decision-making in patients is related to genuine risk behavior or to impulse control deficits. METHODS: To test between these two alternative possibilities, we evaluated the performance of 19 prodromal HD patients and 19 matched healthy controls in the Cambridge Gambling Task (CGT). This task assesses decision-making while dissociating bet

Cognitive judgment bias in the psychostimulant-induced model of mania in rats.

RATIONALE: Animal models of mania lack genuine cognitive parameters. The present gold standard of mania models, amphetamine-induced hyperlocomotion, is rather unspecific and does not necessarily target its cardinal symptoms. Therefore, alternative behavioral markers that are sensitive to stimulants are required. OBJECTIVES: In the present study, by combining the psychostimulant-induced model of mania in rodents with the recently developed ambiguous-cue interpretation (ACI) tests, we investigated the effects of chronic administration of D-amphetamine and cocaine on the cognitive judgment bias

Need for cognition can magnify or attenuate priming effects in social judgment.

This article hypothesizes that the individual-difference variable, need for cognition (NFC), can have opposite implications for priming effects, depending on prime blatancy. Subtle primes are argued to be more effective for high- versus low-NFC individuals. This is because for high-NFC individuals, (a) constructs are generally easier to activate, (b) their higher amount of thought offers more opportunity for an activated construct to bias judgment, and (c) their thoughtfully formed judgments are more likely to affect behavior. However, because high-NFC individuals are adept at identifying and

Clinical judgment remains of great value in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis.

BACKGROUND: Observation and repeated examination may lead to favourable clinical outcomes in the ever-challenging diagnosis of appendicitis. The goal of this study was to evaluate clinical performance in the diagnosis of suspected appendicitis in a centre with limited access to medical imaging technologies and to identify factors associated with complicated cases. METHODS: A retrospective review of the medical records of 211 consecutive surgical cases of suspected appendicitis, spanning an 11-year period, was performed. The delays before treatment and the subsequent patient outcomes were eval

Determinants of dentists' decisions to initiate dental implant treatment: a judgment analysis.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Do psychosocial patient characteristics influence the decision of a dentist in recommending implant treatment? PURPOSE: This study assessed the importance that dental general practitioners attach to psychosocial patient characteristics when judging the suitability of these patients for dental implant treatment. METHOD AND MATERIAL: The judgment strategy of 30 Dutch dental practitioners was studied by using 2 tasks. Dentists first judged a series of written scenarios representing fictitious patients, each patient being characterized by 4 psychosocial aspects to determine

Teaching AI to handle exceptions: Supervised fine-tuning with human-aligned judgment.

Large language models (LLMs), initially developed for generative AI, are now evolving into agentic AI systems, which make decisions in complex, real-world contexts. Unfortunately, while their generative capabilities are well-documented, their decision-making processes remain poorly understood. This is particularly evident when testing targeted decision-making: for instance, how models handle exceptions, a critical and challenging aspect of decision-making made relevant by the inherent incompleteness of contracts. Here, we demonstrate that LLMs, even ones that excel at reasoning, deviate signif

Legal judgment prediction via dynamic task graph and keyword-aware contrastive learning.

Legal judgment prediction (LJP) aims to predict judgment results based on the factual descriptions of criminal cases and is gradually becoming a popular research topic in the legal field. Case factual descriptions contain a large amount of keyword information, and there are complex dependencies among the subtasks. For example, law article prediction can guide charge prediction and term of penalty prediction. However, most of the previous methods often failed to take advantage of the effective keywords that are commonly present in case descriptions, or failed to consider the interrelationships

Visual form of ASL verb signs predicts non-signer judgment of transitivity.

Longstanding cross-linguistic work on event representations in spoken languages have argued for a robust mapping between an event's underlying representation and its syntactic encoding, such that-for example-the agent of an event is most frequently mapped to subject position. In the same vein, sign languages have long been claimed to construct signs that visually represent their meaning, i.e., signs that are iconic. Experimental research on linguistic parameters such as plurality and aspect has recently shown some of them to be visually universal in sign, i.e. recognized by non-signers as well

Is Syntax Semantically Constrained? Evidence From a Grammaticality Judgment Study of Indonesian.

A central debate in the cognitive sciences surrounds the nature of adult speakers' linguistic representations: Are they purely syntactic (a traditional and widely held view; e.g., Branigan & Pickering, ), or are they semantically structured? A recent study (Ambridge, Bidgood, Pine, Rowland, & Freudenthal, ) found support for the latter view, showing that adults' acceptability judgments of passive sentences were significantly predicted by independent semantic "affectedness" ratings designed to capture the putative semantics of the construction (e.g., Bob was pushed by Wendy is rated as more acc

Recent is more: A negative time-order effect in nonsymbolic numerical judgment.

Humans as well as some nonhuman animals can estimate object numerosities-such as the number of sheep in a flock-without explicit counting. Here, we report on a negative time-order effect (TOE) in this type of judgment: When nonsymbolic numerical stimuli are presented sequentially, the second stimulus is overestimated compared to the first. We examined this "recent is more" effect in two comparative judgment tasks: larger-smaller discrimination and same-different discrimination. Ideal-observer modeling revealed evidence for a TOE in 88.2% of the individual data sets. Despite large individual di

Confidence judgment in depression and dysphoria: the depressive realism vs. negativity hypotheses.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: According to the negativity hypothesis, depressed individuals are over-pessimistic due to negative self-concepts. In contrast, depressive realism suggests that depressed persons are realistic compared to their nondepressed controls. However, evidence supporting depressive realism predominantly comes from judgment comparisons between controls and nonclinical dysphoric samples when the controls showed overconfident bias. This study aimed to test the validity of the two accounts in clinical depression and dysphoria. METHODS: Sixty-eight participants, including healthy

Time required for judgments of numerical inequality: Revisiting symbolic estrangement.

Whether the meaning of symbolic numerals is represented by the approximate number system (ANS) is a subject of long-standing interest, with contradictory results reported across educated adults and developing children. To resolve past discrepancies, we investigated the time required to make judgments of numerical inequality across an expansive numerical spectrum (1-999) and range of ratios (1.125-4.5) in 217 children (ages 4-12) and 66 adults. Testing an experience-dependent framework, Study 1 evaluated whether the relative fluency of symbolic and non-symbolic processing changes with age accor
