Fermented Plant-Based Foods and Postbiotics for Glycemic Control-Microbial Biotransformation of Phytochemicals.

Plant-based fermented foods are increasingly promoted for glycemic control, yet their mechanisms and clinical impact remain incompletely defined. This narrative review synthesizes mechanistic, preclinical, and human data for key matrices-kimchi and other fermented vegetables, tempeh/miso/natto, and related legume ferments, kombucha and fermented teas, plant-based kefir, and cereal/pulse sourdoughs. Across these systems, microbial β-glucosidases, esterases, tannases, and phenolic-acid decarboxylases remodel polyphenols toward more bioaccessible aglycones and phenolic acids, while lactic and ace

Interventions for the management of abdominal pain in ulcerative colitis.

BACKGROUND: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammation of the colon characterised by periods of relapse and remission. It starts in the rectum and can extend throughout the colon. UC and Crohn's disease (CD) are the most common inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs). However, UC tends to be more common than CD. It has no known cure but can be managed with medication and surgery. However, studies have shown that abdominal pain persists in up to one-third of people with UC in remission. Abdominal pain could be a symptom of relapse of the disease due to adverse effects of medication, surgical

Synergistic effects of the early administration of Lactobacillus kefiranofaciens DN1 and Kluyveromyces marxianus KU140723-05 on the inhibition of Salmonella Enteritidis colonization in young chickens.

In this study, we aimed to assess the feasibility of the lactic acid bacterium Lactobacillus kefiranofaciens DN1 (LKF_DN1) and the yeast Kluyveromyces marxianus KU140723-05 (KMA5), recently isolated from kefir, as probiotics. Specifically, we evaluated the effect of early administration of these 2 microbes on the inhibition of Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) colonization in neonatal chicks. We also examined the effects of exposure of chicks to probiotics before SE exposure on the reduction in the number of gut SE. A total of 108 1-day-old specific-pathogen-free male layer chicks were used for 3 in

Foods as Modulators of GLP-1 Secretion.

Background/Objectives: Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which is released by enteroendocrine L-cells, is the primary incretin hormone and plays a pivotal role in glucose regulation, appetite control, and metabolic health. While GLP-1 receptor agonists offer significant therapeutic benefits, there is a growing interest in identifying foods that can increase endogenous GLP-1 production through physiological processes. However, the physiological impact of modulating GLP-1 through diet is modest compared with activating GLP-1 receptors pharmacologically. This narrative review summarizes the latest

Modulating gut microbiota to enhance anti-PD-1/PD-L1 immunotherapy in hepatocellular carcinoma: the role of Lactobacillus kefiranofaciens and SOCS3 regulation.

Immunotherapy targeting the programmed cell death-1 (PD-1)/programmed cell death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) (PD-1/PD-L1) axis has revolutionized cancer treatment, yet its efficacy in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains limited. Emerging evidence suggests that gut microbiota plays a pivotal role in modulating tumor immune microenvironments (TIME), offering a novel avenue to enhance immunotherapy outcomes. This study investigates the regulatory effects of Lactobacillus kefiranofaciens (LK) on the TIME in HCC, focusing on its modulation of Suppressor of cytokine signaling 3 (SOCS3) expression and the Ja

Antimicrobial Effect of Postbiotics on Multidrug-Resistant Escherichia coli.

Pathogens that have developed resistance to antibiotics pose a threat to public health. The primary goal in preventing foodborne infections is to inhibit the growth of and, subsequently, eliminate antibiotic-resistant pathogens at every stage from production to consumption. Escherichia coli, which has acquired resistance to most known antibiotics, is frequently found in chicken meat. In many countries, due to unregulated antibiotic use in poultry farming, poor hygiene in slaughterhouses, or cross-contamination, extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing E. coli has been identified as th

Ethanol is indispensable for virucidal hand antisepsis: memorandum from the alcohol-based hand rub (ABHR) Task Force, WHO Collaborating Centre on Patient Safety, and the Commission for Hospital Hygiene and Infection Prevention (KRINKO), Robert Koch Institute, Berlin, Germany.

BACKGROUND: The approval of ethanol by the Biocidal Products Regulation has been under evaluation since 2007. This follows concern over alcohol uptake from ethanol-based hand rubs (EBHR). If ethanol is classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic, or reprotoxic by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), then this would affect infection prevention and control practices. AIM: A review was performed to prove that ethanol is toxicological uncritical and indispensable for hand antisepsis because of its unique activity against non-enveloped viruses and thus the resulting lack of alternatives. Therefore, the

Probiotics: Potential Benefits and Safety in Hematological Malignancies.

Cancer remains one of the most significant global health challenges, with increasing incidence and mortality rates and a substantial socioeconomic burden. Traditional cancer treatments such as chemotherapeutic drugs and radiation therapies, while effective, have significant adverse effects on the body, prompting the search for less invasive treatment options. In recent years, probiotics have emerged as a promising alternative in the prevention and treatment of cancer and its associated complications, especially in gastrointestinal malignancies. Probiotics have been found to have several benefi
