Knowledge and perceptions of snakes, snakebites and their management among health care workers in Sudan.

BACKGROUND: Snakebite statistics in Sudan are lacking despite the high estimated burden of the problem. One study in Sudan reported the presence of 17 medically significant snakes belonging to three major families: Burrowing asps, Elapidae, and Viperidae. These snakes usually become abundant during and after the rainy season, and most snakebite victims are farm workers. This study was set out based on the observed snakebite management, poor outcomes and lack of information on the healthcare provider's knowledge of this serious, deadly medical and health condition in snakebite-endemic regions o

Summary of the experiences, knowledge, medical management, and family communication of monoallelic MUTYH carriers.

Germline genetic testing for inherited cancer risk is increasingly being performed with multigene panel testing with MUTYH often included on colorectal cancer- and polyposis-focused panels, as well as on broader pan-cancer panels. With up to 1%-2% of the general population being monoallelic MUTYH carriers, pathogenic/likely pathogenic (P/LP) variants in MUTYH are one of the most common findings on multigene cancer panels. However, little is known about patient experience and understanding of monoallelic MUTYH P/LP variants, nor whether such findings influence medical management recommendations

KNOWLEDGE OF HEALTH WORKERS ON CHOLERA MANAGEMENT IN OYO STATE: RESULTS OF A TRAINING INTERVENTION.

INTRODUCTION: Primary Health Care (PHC) workers are usually the frontline health workers involved in disseminating health education to the community and implementing cholera prevention and management guidelines. Given that inadequate health worker performance has been a problem in resource-limited settings such as Nigeria and poor health worker knowledge has been implicated in poor health status in developing nations, continuous training of health workers to improve their knowledge has been recommended to improve health outcomes. OBJECTIVE: This study seeks to ascertain the level of improveme

Hypoglycemic side effects of sulfonylureas and repaglinide in ageing patients - knowledge and self-management.

Insulinotropic oral antidiabetics (OAD) such as sulfonylureas and (SU) glinides are among the frequently prescribed OAD. Side effects are the potential to induce hypoglycemias and weight gain. The aim was to assess the self-managing skills in case of a hypoglycemic event in an elderly type 2 diabetic patient population. In a 2-year period, 160 hospitalized patients (mean age 77.4 years) under insulinotrophic OAD were interviewed using a standardized questionnaire. Additionally, possible dementia was evaluated by using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Clock-Drawing Test (CDT). T

Knowledge and management of disabling conditions in South Asian histories: implications for leprosy futures.

Elimination of leprosy as a public health problem appears feasible in South Asia in the present decade through multi-drug therapy, but management of disability in cured leprosy patients will continue through the 21st century, probably with some ongoing stigma. This paper provides new perspectives on leprosy-related disabilities by reviewing the historical careers of four disabling conditions sharing some features with leprosy: lathyrism, iodine deficiency disorders (IDD), cataract and poliomyelitis. All are targeted for eradication or serious reduction using affordable surgery or preventive me

Knowledge and management strategies in incest cases: a survey of physicians, psychologists and family counselors.

A questionnaire was mailed to all 255 psychologists, psychiatrists, pediatricians, and family counselors listed in the 1983 telephone directory. Of the 108 private practitioners who responded, over one-half had treated a child or adult incest victim in the past year; 86% requested more training in this area. Practitioners had a high level of general knowledge about intrafamilial child sexual abuse. Nevertheless, one-third stated they would not refer to protective services a child who had first made, but then retracted, an incest allegation. While most pediatricians would recommend physical exa

Advances in knowledge and practice benefiting the health and management of first permanent molars in children.

First permanent molars (FPMs) remain the most affected teeth by dental conditions in childhood. Maintaining the health of FPMs should be prioritised by dental professionals. However, if subjected to unfavourable circumstances, FPMs can become compromised and impact the child negatively. In this article, we highlight current thinking and provide practical tips to prevent FPMs from becoming compromised. The importance of including the young person in decision-making and the influence different dental conditions might have on management of FPMs are discussed. Finally, the impact and treatment opt

Current knowledge and perspectives in respiratory management for immunocompromised patients with acute respiratory failure.

PURPOSE: One of the most common causes of intensive care unit admission in the immunocompromised population is acute respiratory failure. This population has many unique characteristics that render their respiratory failure risk factors, etiologies, and management different from the general nonimmunocompromised population. While mortality rates have improved in the setting of invasive mechanical ventilation, it remains higher than the general population, making prevention of intubation a key area of interest. RECENT FINDINGS: Acute respiratory failure in immunocompromised patients is common,

A questionnaire-based study of Paediatric Dentists' knowledge of teething signs, symptoms and management.

INTRODUCTION: Signs and symptoms attributed to erupting primary teeth are commonly known as "teething". Its existence is controversial with concern that overusing this term might mask other illnesses and some treatments may be unnecessary or harmful. Parents/carers can access over-the-counter remedies and may seek professional advice. This survey-based investigation explored gaps in knowledge, training, perceptions and experiences of UK Paediatric Dentists (PDs) regarding teething in young children. METHOD: Cross-sectional study with a convenience sample of PDs with different training levels,
