Lactobacillus rhamnosus strain GG is a potential probiotic for calves.

Diarrhea is a common occurrence in neonatal calves. Several veterinary probiotics claiming to prevent or treat calf diarrhea are available, but have not been well studied. This study assessed the capability of Lactobacillus rhamnosus strain GG (LGG) to maintain viability in the gastrointestinal tract of calves. We also determined whether LGG can be administered in an oral rehydration solution (ORS) without compromising the efficacy of the ORS or the viability of LGG, and whether LGG produces D-lactate or not. To investigate the intestinal survival of LGG, 15 calves were randomized into 3 group

The Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium microflora of the human intestine: composition and succession.

Lactobacillus and bifidobacterial cultures are increasingly used as probiotics in pharmaceuticals and in foods. The selection of strains is performed often for technological rather than for microecological reasons. Detailed reports about species and strains composition of these microorganisms in the intestinal microflora of man are rare. Our investigations were performed with samples originating from infants and adults, taken from faeces and from upper sections of the intestinal tract including mouth and stomach, and from caecum and colon. Post mortem cases as well as test subjects under physi

Metabolism of Lactobacillus and Gardnerella vaginalis in vaginal defined media.

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluates how well a vaginal defined medium (VDM) replicates the in vivo metabolic behaviour of key vaginal microbiota members - Lactobacillus crispatus, L. jensenii, and diverse Gardnerella vaginalis isolates - compared to brain heart infusion (BHI) medium. METHODS: We used 1H NMR spectroscopy to characterise metabolic profiles during in vitro growth of Lactobacillus and Gardnerella species in VDM and BHI. Differences in metabolite production, growth, acidification, and carbohydrate utilisation were assessed. RESULTS: Both L.crispatus and L. jensenii grow well in VDM,

Exploring the potential of Lactobacillus rhamnosus as gluten-digesting bacteria.

BACKGROUND: Celiac disease (CeD), a multifactorial disorder, develops when gluten, the toxic environmental inducer, interacts with CeD susceptibility genetic markers, resulting in a chronic enteropathy. Several extra-intestinal complications may also arise in cases of delayed management. There persists a growing demand to develop non-dietary adjuvant therapeutic options that can help relieve symptoms and improve patients' quality of life. AIM: The present study conducted a bioinformatic approach to look into the potential of using Lactobacillus rhamnosus, a well-established probiotic, as glut

Characterization of a Lactobacillus gasseri strain as a probiotic for female vaginitis.

Vaginitis, a prevalent gynecological condition in women, is mainly caused by an imbalance in the vaginal micro-ecology. The two most common types of vaginitis are vaginal bacteriosis and vulvovaginal candidiasis, triggered by the virulent Gardnerella vaginalis and Candida albicans, respectively. In this study, a strain capable of inhibiting G. vaginalis and C. albicans was screened from vaginal secretions and identified as Lactobacillus gasseri based on 16S rRNA sequences. The strain, named L. gasseri VHProbi E09, could inhibit the growth of G. vaginalis and C. albicans under co-culture condit

Mechanisms of action of Lactobacillus spp. in the treatment of oral candidiasis.

Candida albicans is often associated with oral candidiasis, and drug-resistance profiles have contributed to an increase in morbidity and mortality. It is known that Lactobacillus spp. acts by competing for adhesion to the epithelium, absorption of nutrients and modulation of the human microbiota. Therefore, they are important to assist in the host's microbiological balance and reduce the growth of Candida spp. Until now, there have been no reports in the literature of reviews correlating to the use of Lactobacillus spp. in the treatment of oral candidiasis. Thus, this review aims to highlight

Impact of Lactobacillus in the uterine microbiota on in vitro fertilization outcomes.

Abundant intrauterine Lactobacillus is associated with good in vitro fertilization (IVF) outcomes; however, whether specific species of Lactobacillus have any benefit remains unclear. So we examine the effect of Lactobacillus on the clinical outcomes of IVF at the species level. Uterine microbiota were classified as either Lactobacillus-dominant (LD) or non-Lactobacillus-dominant. In the LD group, we further investigated the clinical results for each Lactobacillus species and evaluated them in relation to IVF outcomes. In Uterine microbiome analysis, Lactobacillus was the most abundant, with t

An Unusual Case of Acute Cholecystitis Caused by Lactobacillus paracasei.

Lactobacillus paracasei is a gram-positive rod commonly found in probiotic foods and is well known to promote healthy gastrointestinal tracts. However, there have been a few case reports that have found Lactobacillus paracasei to be the causative agent in complications such as endocarditis, meningitis, peritonitis, pancreatitis, and cholecystitis. We present the case of a 76-year-old woman who was admitted for decompensated heart failure. The patient also reported abdominal pain in the right upper quadrant. Ultrasound findings suggested cholelithiasis and a subsequent hepatobiliary iminodiacet

Lactobacillus and intestinal diseases: Mechanisms of action and clinical applications.

The gut microbial ecosystem, which is a collection of the host-microbiota interactions and the inter-species interplay among bacteria-dominated microbiota, has become a research hotspot due to its contribution to host health in recent years. Lactobacillus, which has worldwide usage in fermented dairy products, has aroused increasing attention and becomes one of the commonly used probiotics given its promising applications in intestinal health and disease, though it occupies a relatively small proportion of the intestinal microbiota. In the review, we first update the current understanding of d

Can Lactobacillus spp. Be a Factor Reducing the Risk of Miscarriage?

Pregnancy loss is a common obstetric problem. Significant causes of miscarriage include genetic and epigenetic disorders of the embryo, immunological and endocrine factors, uterine malformations, improper embryo selection, and lifestyle. Perhaps a hitherto underappreciated cause of miscarriage may be an abnormal microbiota composition of the female reproductive system. Lactobacillus spp. is the most common bacteria within the reproductive tract. However, the protective role of Lactobacilli in the vagina has been well described in the literature, while it is still unknown what function Lactobac

Lactobacillus paragasseri as a novel causative pathogen of cavernosal abscess.

Most cases of cavernosal abscesses result from the progression of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) commonly caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae; however, cavernosal abscesses without STDs are rare events. Herein, we describe the first case report of a Lactobacillus paragasseri cavernosal abscess. A 63-year-old man with diabetes and a history of foreign object insertion into the urethra one year prior presented with high-grade fever and slight local pain. The patient was diagnosed with L. paragasseri cavernosal abscess based on computed tomography and microbial biochemical examinations in addit

Anticandidal Activities by Lactobacillus Species: An Update on Mechanisms of Action.

Lactobacilli are among the most studied bacteria in the microbiome of the orodigestive and genitourinary tracts. As probiotics, lactobacilli may provide various benefits to the host. These benefits include regulating the composition of the resident microbiota, preventing - or even potentially reverting- a dysbiotic state. Candida albicans is an opportunistic pathogen that can influence and be influenced by other members of the mucosal microbiota and, under immune-compromising conditions, can cause disease. Lactobacillus and Candida species can colonize the same mucosal sites; however, certain

Characterisation of the diol dehydratase pdu operon of Lactobacillus collinoides.

The three genes (pduCDE) encoding the diol dehydratase of Lactobacillus collinoides were sequenced. They exhibited strong identities with the ddrABC and pduCDE genes of Klebsiella oxytoca and Salmonella enterica, respectively. These genes are part of a putative operon with at least four other genes. An eighth open reading frame was identified as homologous to the pocR gene (encoding the operon regulatory protein). Although the enzyme was detected in exponential growth phase, PduCDE activity was increased at the end of exponential phase in presence of 1,2-propanediol.

Inactivation of Lactobacillus helveticus bacteriophages by thermal and chemical treatments.

The effect of several biocides and thermal treatments on the viability of four Lactobacillus helveticus phages was investigated. Times to achieve 99% inactivation of phages at 63 degrees C and 72 degrees C in three suspension media were calculated. The three suspension media were tris magnesium gelatin buffer (10 mM Tris-HCl, 10 mM MgSO4, and 0.1% wt/vol gelatin), reconstituted skim milk sterile reconstituted commercial nonfat dry skim milk, and Man Rogosa Sharpe broth. The thermal resistance depended on the phage considered, but a treatment of 5 min at 90 degrees C produced a total inactivati
