The adherence of Trichomonas vaginalis to host ectocervical cells is influenced by lactobacilli.

OBJECTIVES: Trichomoniasis is a common sexually transmitted disease, and adhesion of the pathogen Trichomonas vaginalis to the host vaginal cells is the first step in establishing infection. For this to happen, the pathogen has to overcome a natural protective barrier composed mostly of lactobacilli. The objective of this study was to understand the role of lactobacilli in the adhesion of T vaginalis to host cells. METHODS: Adhesion assays were carried out by incubating vaginal epithelial cells (VECs) with T vaginalis and lactobacilli together and compared with non-lactobacilli recipient cont

Protective effect of Ssanghwa-tang fermented by Lactobacillus fermentum against carbon tetrachloride-induced acute hepatotoxicity in rats.

Ssanghwa-tang (SHT) is a traditional herbal medicine formula that has been used for the development of physical strength, relief of pain, and the reduction of fatigue. In this study, we fermented SHT with Lactobacillus fermentum (L. fermentum), Lactobacillus gasseri (L.gasseri), or Lactobacillus casei (L.casei) to investigate the hepatoprotective effects of SHT and fermented SHT with Lactobacillus on carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4))-induced liver injury in rats. Rats were given CCl(4) (1 ml/kg, 50% CCl(4) in olive oil) intraperitoneally and either SHT or fermented SHTs (15 ml/kg) was administered

Lactobacillus vaginal microbiota of women attending a reproductive health care service in Benin city, Nigeria.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine whether Lactobacillus species found in African women differ substantially to those of white decent, described in previous studies. The vaginal microbiota play an important role in female health, and when the naturally dominant lactobacilli are displaced resulting in bacterial vaginosis (BV), the host is more at risk of acquiring sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV. METHODS: Vaginal samples were collected from 241 healthy, premenopausal Nigerian women, which were then Gram-stained for Nugent scoring. Microbial DNA was extracted,

Cervicovaginal microbiota isolated from healthy women exhibit probiotic properties and antimicrobial activity against pathogens isolated from cervical cancer patients.

Abnormal cervicovaginal microbiota play an important role in HPV persistence and progression to cervical cancer. The present study aimed at isolating and identifying potential probiotics from vaginal swabs of healthy women and evaluating their activity against vaginal pathogens isolated from cervical cancer patients. Based on probiotic, acid-bile tolerance and antimicrobial properties, 13 lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from the healthy group were identified by MALDI TOF MS (Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption and Ionisation, Time Of Flight Mass Spectrometry). Among these, four strains, Lactobacillus

Vaginal Lactobacilli Supernatants Protect from Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Infection in Cell Culture Models.

A healthy vaginal microbiota hosts Lactobacillus as the most predominant genus. Lactobacilli play a role in human health through the production of diverse antimicrobial substances that can act against human pathogens or modulate the immune system. Previous reports highlighted the ability of vaginal lactobacilli to counteract viruses causing STIs, e.g., HIV-1 and HSV-2. In this report, we analyze the activity of supernatants of vaginal lactobacilli against HSV-1 infection, which is becoming increasingly relevant as a STI. We show that the supernatants of two vaginal Lactobacillus species (i.e.,

Chitooligosaccharides enhance T-cell immunity via supporting the dominant growth of β-1,4-glycosidase-expressing Lactobacillus spp. in mice.

Chitooligosaccharides (COSs) are hydrolysates of chitosan polymers. COSs have many biological functions, especially in immune activation. Gut microbiota is closely related to the decomposition of natural glycans in the human intestine and plays a pivotal role in regulating the immune system. But the role and mechanism of intestinal microbiota in mediating the effects of COSs on the immune system remain unclear. In this study, BALB/c mice were gavaged with 100 μL of COSs at a concentration of 0.1 g/mL for 60 days, and the intestinal microbiota and immune cells of the mouse spleen were detected.

The roles of gut microbiota and their metabolites in uric acid-related metabolic diseases: mechanisms and therapeutic targets.

Gut microbiota and their metabolites play a central regulatory role in uric-acid-related metabolic diseases, serving as a crucial interface linking purine metabolism with host inflammatory responses. This review synthesizes current evidence on microbial community alterations, metabolic functional shifts, and receptor-mediated signaling mechanisms in hyperuricemia, gout, and uric acid nephropathy. Studies demonstrate that gut microbes can directly degrade purine substrates, modulate uric acid transporters and metabolic enzyme activity, and regulate host pathways through metabolites such as shor

Evidence of Lactobacillus strains shared between the female urinary and vaginal microbiota.

Lactobacillus species are common inhabitants of the 'Работает' female urinary and vaginal communities, often associated with a lack of symptoms in both anatomical sites. Given identification by prior studies of similar bacterial species in both communities, it has been hypothesized that the two microbiotas are in fact connected. Here, we carried out whole-genome sequencing of 49 Lactobacillus strains, including 16 paired urogenital samples from the same participant. These strains represent five different Lactobacillus species: L. crispatus, L. gasseri, L. iners, L. jensenii, and L. paragasseri.

pHyph, a novel antibiotic-free treatment for bacterial vaginosis, promotes Lactobacillus growth and reduces the abundance of pathogens in the vagina.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is the most common vaginal infection among women of reproductive age worldwide, caused by dysbiosis of the vaginal microbiome. Despite its prevalence, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood, making diagnosis and treatment challenging. Although antibiotics are the standard therapy, recurrence rates are high, up to 50% within 1 year, and repeated treatments contribute to the rise of antimicrobial resistance. There is an urgent need for alternative, sustainable, and microbiome-friendly treatment options. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether pH

Angiotensin-(1-7) alleviates intestinal barrier dysfunction and dysbiosis in mice with polymicrobial sepsis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The intestine plays a key role in the initiation of sepsis. The gut barrier impedes the translocation of commensal bacteria to the liver in sepsis. Previous studies have reported that angiotensin-(1-7) [Ang-(1-7)] attenuated sepsis-induced organ injury and mortality. However, its role in sepsis-induced intestinal barrier dysfunction remains unclear. Here we have investigated therapeutic effects of Ang-(1-7) on the intestinal barrier dysfunction and dysbiosis in a murine model of sepsis. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: We used a model of sepsis in C57BL/6 mice with caecal ligati

Inhibiting pathogenicity of vaginal Candida albicans by lactic acid bacteria and MS analysis of their extracellular compounds.

Maintaining healthy vaginal microflora post-puberty is critical. In this study we explore the potential of vaginal lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and their extracellular metabolites against the pathogenicity of Candida albicans. The probiotic culture free supernatant (PCFS) from Lactobacillus crispatus, L. gasseri, and L. vaginalis exhibit an inhibitory effect on budding, hyphae, and biofilm formation of C. albicans. LGPCFS manifested the best potential among the LAB PCFS, inhibiting budding for 24 h and restricting hyphae formation post-stimulation. LGPCFS also pre-eminently inhibited biofilm for

From whole genomes to probiotic candidates: A study of potential lactobacilli strains selection for vaginitis treatment.

Vaginitis, characterized by pathogenic invasion and a deficiency in beneficial lactobacilli, has recognized lactobacilli supplementation as a novel therapeutic strategy. However, due to individual differences in vaginal microbiota, identifying universally effective Lactobacillus strains is challenging. Traditional methodologies for probiotic selection, which heavily depend on extensive in vitro experiments, are both time-intensive and laborious. The aim of this study was to pinpoint possible vaginal probiotic candidates based on whole-genome screening. We sequenced the genomes of 98 previously

Distribution of tyrosol fatty acid esters in the gastrointestinal tracts of mice and their hydrolysis characteristics by gut microbiota.

Phenolic lipids have been approved as safe and effective antioxidants, and are a potential ingredient for functional foods. However, the characteristics of gastrointestinal distribution and microbial hydrolysis in the gastrointestinal tract (GI) are not clear. In this study, the above characteristics of tyrosol-myristic acid ester (T-C14:0), tyrosol-palmitic acid ester (T-C16:0) and tyrosol-stearic acid ester (T-C18:0) were estimated by an in vivo mice model and in vitro anaerobic fermentation model. HPLC-UV measurements indicate that tyrosol (TYr) was rapidly and almost completely absorbed in
