Increasing evidence suggests that prenatal exposure to opioids may affect brain development, but limited data exist on the effects of opioid-exposure on preschool language development. Our study aimed to characterize the nature and prevalence of language problems in children prenatally exposed to opioids, and the factors that support or hinder language acquisition. A sample of 100 children born to pregnant women in methadone maintenance treatment and 110 randomly identified non-exposed children were studied from birth to age 4.5 years. At 4.5 years, 89 opioid-exposed and 103 non-exposed childr

OBJECTIVE: Eating disorders are becoming increasingly prevalent among individuals from non-Western countries, yet few non-English-language measures of eating pathology exist. The current study sought to develop and validate a Chinese version of the Eating Pathology Symptoms Inventory(1) with cross-cultural equivalence.
METHOD: The Chinese version of the Eating Pathology Symptoms Inventory (CEPSI) was translated and back-translated by native Chinese speakers, and administered to a pilot sample of native Chinese speaking students (N = 45) from a Midwestern university in the United States. The m

BACKGROUND: Five-year-olds with specific language impairment (SLI) often struggle with mastering grammatical morphemes. It has been proposed that verbal morphology is particularly problematic in this respect. Previous research has also shown that in young typically developing children grammatical markers appear later in more phonologically challenging contexts.
AIMS: The main aim was to explore whether grammatical deficits in children with SLI are morphosyntactic in nature, or whether phonological factors also explain some of the variability in morpheme production. The analysis considered the

The impact of bilingual exposure on language learning has not been systematically studied in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. This study compared the social abilities and language levels of children (mean age = 56 months) with ASDs from bilingual (n = 45) and monolingual (n = 30) environments. Bilingually-exposed children were subgrouped based on simultaneous bilingual exposure from infancy (SIM, n = 24) versus sequential post-infancy bilingual exposure (SEQ, n = 21). Despite significantly different amounts of bilingual exposure across all groups (p = <0.001) and significantly stronger

The purposes of this study were to investigate (a) whether children in families with a positive history of dyslexia were more likely to show delays in language development than children without family risk and (b) whether a delayed onset of expressive language (late talking) predicted later language development. We analyzed the language development of 200 children longitudinally at 14, 24, 30, and 42 months and assessed their symbolic play at 14 months. Half of the children (N = 106) were from families with a history of dyslexia (the Dyslexia Risk [DR] group), and other children served as age-

BACKGROUND: Several studies document the importance of communicative abilities for children's development. Especially in recent years verbal communication in preschool children with developmental language disorder (DLD) has been studied, relying heavily on statistical analysis, outcome measures, or/and parents' reports.
PURPOSE: This explorative study investigates the effects of speech therapy on the development of language and verbal communication skills in preschool children with DLD within their peer group in a day-to-day setting using objective video-documentation.

BACKGROUND: This study examined the immediate and sustained effects of song-based language learning on English as a foreign language (EFL) learners' academic development, cognitive engagement, and motivation for learning. The study is primarily grounded in self-determination theory and sociocultural theory and is additionally informed by the input and output hypotheses and multimodal learning theory.
METHOD: A quasi-experimental design was employed with 200 elementary-level EFL learners drawn from eight private language institutes in Urmia, Iran. Participants were assigned to experimental and

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the capability of a large language model (LLM) for performing each of the steps of clinical practice guideline development from framing a healthcare question to creating the evidence-to-decision framework.
METHODS: The LLM tool used for this study was OpenAI Generative Pretrained Transformer (GPT)-4o. This evaluation of an LLM was conducted concomitantly with development of a clinical practice guideline on neuromuscular blockade in adults with acute respiratory distress syndrome for the Society of Critical Care Medicine. Developing generalist foundation model has recently attracted tremendous attention in the field of AI for Medicine, which requires open-source medical image datasets that incorporate diverse supervision signals across various imaging modalities. In this paper, we introduce RadGenome-Chest CT, a comprehensive, large-scale, region-guided 3D chest CT interpretation dataset based on CT-RATE. Specifically, we leverage the latest powerful universal segmentation model and large language models, to extend the original datasets from the following aspects: organ-level segmentation masks covering 197 cat

BACKGROUND: The proliferation of both general purpose and health care-specific large language models (LLMs) has intensified the challenge of effectively evaluating and comparing them. Data contamination plagues the validity of public benchmarks, self-preference distorts LLM-as-a-judge approaches, and there is a gap between the tasks used to test models and those used in clinical practice.
OBJECTIVE: In response, we propose CLEVER (Clinical Large Language Model Evaluation-Expert Review), a methodology for blind, randomized, preference-based evaluation by practicing medical doctors on specific

Little information is available on d/Deaf and hard of hearing (d/DHH) learners' L2 development. Their limited auditory access may discourage them from taking standardized tests, highlighting the need for alternative ways of assessing their L2 development and proficiency. Therefore, this study suggests adopting processability theory, which demonstrates a universal order of L2 development. Interviews with d/DHH learners and their teachers were conducted to explore their current difficulties in regard to understanding their L2 development. Also, we conducted brief speaking tasks to suggest altern

Congenital heart defects are the most common congenital anomalies, accounting for a third of all congenital anomaly cases. While surgical correction dramatically improved survival rates, the lag behind normal neurodevelopment appears to persist. Deficits in higher cognitive functions are particularly common, including developmental delay in communication and oral-motor apraxia. It remains unclear whether the varying degree of cognitive developmental delay is reflected in variability in brain growth patterns. To answer this question, we aimed to investigate whether the rate of regional brain gr

Retrospective recall about children's symptoms is used to establish early developmental patterns in clinical practice and is also utilised in child psychopathology research. Some studies have indicated that the accuracy of retrospective recall is influenced by life events. Our hypothesis was that an intervention: speech and language therapy, would adversely affect the accuracy of parent recall of early concerns about their child's speech and language development. Mothers (n = 5,390) reported on their child's speech development (child male to female ratio = 50:50) when their children were aged
