[The role of speech therapists on speech language disordered children].

As psychological and physiological development and circumstances vary considerably, the problems of speech and language in children are further complicated. The speech therapists (ST) who have been concerned with these children and their families are requested eagerly to reconsider and control their own communicative attitude. Furthermore, STs have to improve clinical technique that is appropriate to each child. In this report, the author shows the outline of the speech and language problems of children, and discusses the merit and demerit of speech therapy itself. The clinical approach for mo

Neural correlates of language disfunction in psychiatric disorders: a developmental perspective.

Language forms the foundation of social interactions, allowing us to connect with family and peers. Through speech, we express our thoughts and emotions to others. Experiencing challenges in speech and language functions during development can therefore significantly affect social relationships, cognitive and affective development. In child and adolescence psychiatry, clinicians have observed that speech and language abilities may be altered in various mental (behavioral/developmental) disorders (psychiatric disorders). This review provides an overview of systematic and original investigations

The clinical and genetic spectrum of paediatric speech and language disorders.

Speech and language disorders are known to have a substantial genetic contribution. Although frequently examined as components of other conditions, research on the genetic basis of linguistic differences as separate phenotypic subgroups has been limited so far. Here, we performed an in-depth characterization of speech and language disorders in 52 143 individuals, reconstructing clinical histories using a large-scale data-mining approach of the electronic medical records from an entire large paediatric healthcare network. The reported frequency of these disorders was the highest between 2 and 5

Distinct reinforcement learning profiles distinguish between language and attentional neurodevelopmental disorders.

BACKGROUND: Theoretical models posit abnormalities in cortico-striatal pathways in two of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders (Developmental dyslexia, DD, and Attention deficit hyperactive disorder, ADHD), but it is still unclear what distinct cortico-striatal dysfunction might distinguish language disorders from others that exhibit very different symptomatology. Although impairments in tasks that depend on the cortico-striatal network, including reinforcement learning (RL), have been implicated in both disorders, there has been little attempt to dissociate between different types of

[Therapy of Language Disorders in Childhood: A Guideline is long overdue].

In speech and language therapy of developmental language disorders, it is still largely unclear how evidence from individual therapeutic expertise integrates into clinical-practical procedure. Therefore, development of a therapy guideline addressing language disorders in childhood, especially for kindergarten- and preschool children, is long overdue for two reasons and poses a particular challenge: (1) Language disorders that are not associated with a comorbidity are given varying terms; (2) all language disorders are an interface between medical, psychological, educational, linguistic and lan

Psychiatric implications of language disorders and learning disabilities: risks and management.

This article reviews the relationship between different learning disabilities, language disorders, and the psychiatric disorders that are commonly associated with learning disabilities and language disorder: attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety disorders, depression, and conduct or antisocial personality disorder. The complex associations between language disorders and specific learning disabilities--dyslexia, nonverbal learning disorder, dyscalculia--and the various psychiatric disorders are discussed. Clinical vignettes are presented to highlight the impact of these disor

Toe walking. A marker for language disorders in the developmentally disabled.

Toe walking unassociated with an autistic disorder or cerebral palsy generally has been considered a normal infant gait. The incidence of toe walking in various diagnostic subgroups of 799 developmentally disabled children presenting to a tertiary-level multidisciplinary assessment clinic was reviewed to investigate the authors' clinical impression that toe walking may be a marker for language dysfunction. Toe walking was found to be more frequent in those diagnostic subgroups with more severe language disorders. Toe walking also correlated with lower IQ scores (p less than 0.0001). The sensit

[Left anterior choroidal artery syndrome with language disorders and constructional apraxia].

The infarction in the territory of the anterior choroidal artery may induce a sensory motor impairment and neuropsychological symptoms close to those observed in some thalamic lesions. In a right handed man with a left sided infarction, language disturbances and constructional apraxia were observed. Cerebral blood flow measurements were performed 4 days after the stroke with the 133Xenon inhalation method. A decrease of mean hemispheric values was observed on both sides but more so on the left hemisphere, in the left frontoparietal regions. 98 days after the stroke language and constructional

Semantic disorders of auditory language comprehension in right brain-damaged patients.

A test of auditory language comprehension was given to 110 right brain-damaged patients and to 94 normal controls in order to check if patients with lesions of the right (nondominant) hemisphere make a significantly higher number of semantic errors than normals. Confirmation of the hypothesis was obtained, but the relationship between semantic errors and lesion of the right hemisphere did not seem a simple and direct one. In fact, most of the lexical-semantic errors were due to associated variables (such as unilateral spatial agnosia and general mental deterioration) and not to the lesion of t

Mismatch Negativity and Auditory Brain Stem Response in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and Language Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Language disorders (LD) in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are highly variable and has a severe impact on the level of functioning in autistic children. Early diagnosis of these language disorders is essential for early interventions for children at risk. The electrophysiological measurements are considered valuable tools for determining language disabilities in children with ASD. This study aimed to study and compare ABR and MMN in autistic children with language disorders. METHODS: This study included a group of typically developing children and a group of children diagnosed with

Dyslexia and Developmental Language Disorder: comorbid disorders with distinct effects on reading comprehension.

BACKGROUND: Reading comprehension draws on both decoding and linguistic comprehension, and poor reading comprehension can be the consequence of a deficit in either of these skills. METHODS: Using outcome data from the longitudinal Wellcome Language and Reading Project, we identified three groups of children at age 8 years: children with dyslexia (N = 21) who had deficits in decoding but not oral language, children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD; N = 38) whose decoding skills were in the normal range, and children who met criteria for both dyslexia and DLD (N = 29). RESULTS: All th

Dyslexia with and without developmental language disorder: Profile analysis.

UNLABELLED: The characterization of dyslexia as a language learning impairment can be traced back to Samuel Orton who in 1937 wrote that ‘strephosymbolia’ (his term for the condition) was due to an impairment of the ‘language faculty’. Some 40 years later, Vellutino (Theory and research, 1979) published his classic text, Dyslexia: Theory and Research in which he argued that dyslexia could be characterized as a verbal processing deficit. However, in more recent times, the language difficulties of dyslexia have been underplayed Adlof et al. (Language, speech, and hearing services in schools, 49(

Understanding speech and language in KIF1A-associated neurological disorder.

KIF1A-associated neurological disorder (KAND) is a genetic condition characterised by motor, cognitive and ophthalmologic features. The speech and language phenotype have not been systematically analysed. Here, we assess speech and language using observer- and clinician-reported outcomes, and performance outcome measures. 44 individuals (25 female) with KAND (median age 7 years, range 1-60 years) participated. Median age at diagnosis was 4 years (range 0.5-58 years). KIF1A variants were missense (41/44 individuals, 93%), intragenic deletion (2/44, 5%) and splice site (1/44, 2%). Age at first w
