[Contact eczema and epicutaneous tests--distribution of allergens and changes in the spectrum in Vienna].

Thousands of contact antigens have been defined. It is, however, remarkable that only a small group of substances (15 to 20) have proved to be frequent or otherwise important causes of allergic contact dermatitis. In agreement with reports from comparable centres, metals are high up on the "hitlist" of frequent allergens (nickel 24%, cobalt 9%, chromates 6%), followed by ingredients of cosmetics and toiletries (fragrances 16%, balsam of Peru 10%, Kathon 5%), whilst already way back are topical medicines (neomycin 4%, parabens 3%, lanolin 2%, benzocaine 1%) and rubber additives (thiuram-mix 2%

Increased sensitivity of patch testing by standardized tape stripping beforehand: a multicentre diagnostic accuracy study.

BACKGROUND: As a modification of patch testing, the strip patch test was established to obtain more sensitive and reliable test results. Comparative data on diagnostic accuracy for both tests are missing. OBJECTIVES: To compare the diagnostic accuracy of strip patch tests and patch tests in detecting sensitizations in patients with suspected allergic contact dermatitis by using patient history as the reference standard. PATIENTS/METHODS: In a multicentre, prospective, investigator-blinded study 790 patients were enrolled. The defined reference standard was established prior to patch testing.

[Skin sensitizers in cosmetics and skin care products].

Cosmetics are defined as "articles with mild action on the human body, which are intended to be applied to the human body through rubbing, sprinkling or other methods, aiming to clean, beautify and increase the attractiveness, alter the appearance or to keep the skin or hair in good condition (The Pharmaceutical Affairs Law: Article 2)." Consequently, they include personal hygiene products such as shampoos, soaps and toothpaste. In Europe, 1% of the population is estimated to be allergic to fragrances and 2-3% to ingredients of cosmetics; 10% of outpatients patch-tested for cosmetics allergy w

Allergic contact dermatitis to personal care products and topical medications in adults with atopic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is associated with skin-barrier disruption, immune dysregulation, and application of emollients and topical medications that might predispose a person toward developing allergic contact dermatitis. OBJECTIVE: To determine the predictors of allergic contact dermatitis and relevant allergens in AD. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed for 502 adults (age ≥18 years) who were patch tested to an expanded allergen series during 2014-2017. RESULTS: Overall, 108 (21.5%) had current AD and 109 (21.7%) had past AD. Patients with and without current AD

Allergens Responsible for Contact Allergy in Children From 2010 to 2024: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Contact allergy (CA) is a frequent condition in children; however, newer estimates of the prevalence of CA in children are lacking. Herein, we aim to provide an estimate of the prevalence of CA in children from 2010 to 2024. Two authors independently searched PubMed, Embase and Web of Science for studies reporting the prevalence of positive patch tests (PPTs) to allergens in populations including ≥ 100 children (< 18 years). Proportion meta-analyses were conducted to calculate the pooled prevalence estimates of CA in children. Seventeen studies comprising 11 593 children undergoing patch testi

Allergic and non-allergic periorbital dermatitis: patch test results of the Information Network of the Departments of Dermatology during a 5-year period.

Periorbital dermatitis is common and can be due to the external use of ophthalmic drugs. We evaluated patch test results of the Information Network of the Departments of Dermatology. During a 5-year period (1995-99), of a total 49,256 patch-tested patients, 1053 (2.1%) were eventually diagnosed as allergic periorbital contact dermatitis (APD) and 588 (1.2%) as non-allergic periorbital dermatitis (NAPD). Patient characteristics between APD, NAPD and other cases (OCs) differed with respect to sex (19.7% male in both periorbital groups versus 36.3% in OCs), atopic dermatitis (10.4% in APD versus

Frequency of contact allergy in children with atopic dermatitis: results of a prospective study of 137 cases.

The aim of our study was the evaluation of contact sensitization in pediatric patients with atopic dermatitis (AD). It seems that the frequency of contact allergies in the course of AD, and also the frequency of contact allergies in children, is underestimated in general. Our study has been performed by investigating 137 children with AD. The childrens' history was taken according standardized consultation guidelines and followed by a physical examination. Patch testing was performed systematically, including the European standard series, together with tixocortol pivalate, budesonide and the a

Characterization of Pediatric Patch Testing: A Retrospective Review, 2020-2023.

Background: Recent evidence shows similar rates of allergic contact Dermatitis® (ACD) among children and adults despite children accounting for less than 10% of patch testing subjects. With a need for in-depth analyses of pediatric ACD, we herein characterize a pediatric cohort at a large North American patch testing center. Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted for 135 patients ages 1-17 years who underwent patch testing from July 2020 from August 2023. Data were stratified by age 1-5, 6-11, and 12-17 years. Significance-Prevalence Index Numbers (SPIN) were calculated. Results:

A cannabinoid Hairy-Tale: Hair loss or hair gain?

BACKGROUND: Few studies have reported on the use of cannabinoid products to treat hair loss. AIM: This article aims to reconcile cannabinoids' impact on hair growth. METHOD: A comprehensive and structured search was conducted in PubMed and Google Scholar on June 23, 2022. RESULT: While cannabidiol (CBD), a phytocannabinoid, may cause hair growth, several other phytocannabinoids may lead to hair loss. Additionally, the effect of CBD on hair growth may be concentration-dependent. CBD may cause hair loss at high concentrations (≥10 μM). Therefore, the concentration of CBD needs to be adjusted
