Latex is a substance that is extracted from the plant Hevea Brasiliensis, and world production is 6 million metric tons per year. After gathering it undergoes a series of processes in which ammonia, vulcanization-accelerating additives or anti-oxidants are added. All of this may constitute the antigenic load that latex contains. It is used in medicine for gloves, drainage tubes, dental implants and a growing number of products from condoms to sport products or automobile components. Immediate-type hypersensitivity due to natural rubber (latex) products is an increasing problem for the anaesthetist, because a major part of products used for anaesthesia contains natural rubber. If the patient has a positive history of allergic symptoms after contact to natural rubber like urticaria, bronchospasm or anaphylaxis, preoperative skin tests, in vitro tests, and if necessary even the latex-glove-wearing test should be performed. This article discusses the potential problem of latex allergy in the school, particularly among students with spina bifida. The origin of the problem, its symptoms, and prevention and management of latex allergy in the school environment are described. The individual roles of school administrator, school nurse, parent, student and other service providers are listed within an Individual Healthcare Plan (IHP). The IHP is proposed as a guide to schools to assist with identification of latex allergy reactions as well as response procedures if an allergic reaction is identified.

In medical literature, there are many cases reported of anaphylaxis due to fruits, before or after allergic reactions to latex. We present two atopic patients, with allergy to latex (by clinical history, positive skin test and RAST). Both patients showed a positive skin test and RAST to fruits (banana, kiwi, avocado and chestnut), but clinically caused no symptoms.

Latex recently has been associated with severe intraoperative IgE-mediated anaphylactic reactions. Pediatric patients with meningomyelocele (spina bifida) appear to be specifically at risk for this type of reaction. This article provides background information on the etiology of latex allergies, identifies some commonly used dental products containing latex, recommends some alternatives to use, and suggests precautions the dental practitioner should take when treating high-risk individuals such as spina bifida patients.

A latex test for immunodiagnosis of murine typhus, using erythrocyte-sensitizing substance from Rickettsia prowazekii absorbed to latex particles, has been developed. The test was evaluated with a total of 234 healthy person and non-typhus patient sera, 89 single and 63 paired typhus patient sera. The history of a man suffering from chronic cryptococcal meningitis is presented. A series of cerebrospinal fluid and serum specimens from this patient were investigated retrospectively by latex agglutination for the presence of cryptococcal antigens. The results were related to other laboratory findings, and to the patient's clinical progress. The cryptococcal latex agglutination test was shown to be potentially useful in the diagnosis, management, and prognosis of such patients.

Latex proteins from nonammoniated natural rubber latex were investigated for their reactivity with antibodies in the sera of patients with spina bifida and health care workers with allergy to latex.
