In light of global efforts to advance a circular economy for plastics, this study examines Latin America's transition through three core objectives. First, it analyzes secondary data on plastic production and consumption and the generation, mismanagement, and transboundary trade of plastic waste. Second, it scrutinizes government-led initiatives across the region based on official policy documents. Third, it conducts a SWOT analysis, evaluating the initiatives' strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to assess the current landscape of circular product design and business models, as w

INTRODUCTION: Dementia is increasing rapidly in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), but research output remains limited. Tracking publication trends, themes, and collaborations is key to guiding regional research and policy.
METHODS: Bibliometric analysis was conducted on dementia-related publications from 21 LAC countries (1990 to 2024) using Scopus. Thirteen keywords identified relevant articles, classified into themes through artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted and manual review. Bibliometrix and VOSviewer assessed publication trends, country and institutional output, and collaboratio

Lyme disease (LD) is caused by a bacterial genospecies complex named Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.), which includes B. burgdorferi sensu stricto (B.b.s.s). Originally described in North America, LD has also been described in other parts of the Northern Hemisphere, and in Eurasia. Different B.b.s.l. species, transmitted through geographically diverse tick vectors, are associated with different clinical presentations of the disease. In recent years, the incidence and the endemic range of LD have steadily expanded to include areas of the world with tropical climate, including Latin Americ

Tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), remains a major global health challenge and the leading cause of death from a single infectious agent. Despite diagnostic and therapeutic advances, the COVID-19 pandemic reversed progress in TB control, with a notable rise in incidence across Latin America. This region bears a disproportionate burden of the disease due to socioeconomic inequality, limited access to healthcare, and high rates of multidrug-resistant TB. Interactions among pathogen genetics, host susceptibility, immune response, and environmental determinants critical

Plasmodium vivax is the predominant malaria parasite in Latin America. Its colonization history in the region is rich and complex, and is still highly debated, especially about its origin(s). Our study employed cutting-edge population genomic techniques to analyze whole genome variation from 620 P. vivax isolates, including 107 newly sequenced samples from West Africa, Middle East, and Latin America. This sampling represents nearly all potential source populations worldwide currently available. Analyses of the genetic structure, diversity, ancestry, coalescent-based inferences, including demog

To identify measures that mitigate the impact of influenza in Latin America and the Caribbean, we compared the burden and detection capacity in humans and animals after the 2009 pandemic. The incidence rate in people was higher in Chile (23.72 per 100,000 people), but the impact was greater for Guatemala (503.78 disability-adjusted life years per 100,000 people). Brazil, Peru, Argentina, and Mexico built better medical testing, with typing being less frequent in Chile and Argentina, where costs for medical care were higher. The positivity rate among avian and nonhuman mammals was 5.8%, with mo

The changing epidemiology and diagnostic challenges of coccidioidomycosis, histoplasmosis, and paracoccidioidomycosis in Latin America are reviewed. The agents responsible for these three systemic endemic mycoses are dimorphic fungi from the Onygenales order, all of which are classified as World Health Organization fungal priority pathogens. However, the mycoses they cause span a notable diversity of contrasting etiologies, target populations, geographic distributions, and factors (including climate changes) that determine their incidence. New, updated maps are presented that reflect the curre

INTRODUCTION: Although today we live in a globalised world, the ties established between the Iberian Peninsula and the countries of Latin America are particularly strong, with important migratory flows. This connection may condition the development of diseases that involve a genetic influence, which may in turn be modulated by various environmental factors. The aim of this review is to determine the descriptive epidemiology of myasthenia gravis in the Iberian Peninsula and in Latin America.
DEVELOPMENT: A literature search was conducted in Medline, LILACS and Google Scholar for the different

This scoping review aims to explore the interplay between substance use (SU) and HIV in Latin America (LA). Database searches yielded 3481 references; 196 were included. HIV prevalence among people who used substances (PWUS) ranged from 2.8-15.2%. SU definitions were variable throughout studies, and thus data were not easily comparable. In 2019, only 2% of new HIV infections were attributed to injection drug use (IDU) in LA. Factors associated with HIV among PWUS included being female, IDU and homelessness, and PWUS were likely to engage in risky sexual behaviors, start antiretroviral treatmen

Malaria elimination in Latin America is becoming an elusive goal. Malaria cases reached a historical ~1 million in 2017 and 2018, with Venezuela contributing 53% and 51% of those cases, respectively. Historically, malaria incidence in southern Venezuela has accounted for most of the country's total number of cases. The efficient deployment of disease prevention measures and prediction of disease spread to new regions requires an in-depth understanding of spatial heterogeneity on malaria transmission dynamics. Herein, we characterized the spatial epidemiology of malaria in southern Venezuela fr

Reports on tropical infections among kidney transplant (KT) recipients have increased in recent years, mainly because of the growing number of KT programs located in tropical and subtropical areas, and greater mobility or migration between different areas of the world. Endemic in emerging and developing regions, like most countries in Latin America, tropical infections are an important cause of morbidity and mortality in this population. Tropical infections in KT recipients may exhibit different pathways for acquisition compared with those in nonrecipients, such as transmission through a graft

This Food and Nutrition Bulletin supplement summarizes updated prevalence data on micronutrient deficiencies in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). In order to provide an updated view of micronutrient status in LAC, systematic reviews were performed utilizing national health surveys and research-oriented studies focused on the prevalence of deficiencies of vitamin A, folate, anemia (as a proxy of iron deficiency), and zinc. Results show that the prevalence of vitamin A deficiency has been reduced in many countries, folate deficiency is now almost non-existent, low or marginal vitamin B12 st

Strongyloides stercoralis is rarely recognized as a major public health issue, probably because its burden is largely underestimated. We reviewed the literature (both PubMed and 'grey' literature) about the prevalence of strongyloidiasis in Latin America, an area of presumable high endemicity. There were finally 88 papers involved in the analysis, covering the period between 1981 and 2011. Studies were heterogeneous in several aspects, such as the populations screened and the diagnostic methods used. Most of the studies relied on direct coproparasitological examination, which has low sensitivi

BACKGROUND: The epidemiology of candidemia varies depending on the geographic region. Little is known about the epidemiology of candidemia in Latin America.
METHODS: We conducted a 24-month laboratory-based survey of candidemia in 20 centers of seven Latin American countries. Incidence rates were calculated and the epidemiology of candidemia was characterized.
RESULTS: Among 672 episodes of candidemia, 297 (44.2%) occurred in children (23.7% younger than 1 year), 36.2% in adults between 19 and 60 years old and 19.6% in elderly patients. The overall incidence was 1.18 cases per 1,000 admissio
