Learning patient-specific spatial biomarker dynamics via operator learning for Alzheimer's disease progression.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a complex, multifactorial neurodegenerative disorder with substantial heterogeneity in progression and treatment response. Despite recent therapeutic advances, predictive models capable of accurately forecasting individualized future biomarker states remain limited. Here, we present a machine learning-based operator learning framework for personalized modeling of AD progression, integrating longitudinal multimodal imaging, biomarker, and clinical data. Unlike conventional models with prespecified dynamics, our approach directly learns patient-specific disease operat

Xeno-learning: knowledge transfer across species in deep learning-based spectral image analysis.

Optical imaging techniques, such as hyperspectral imaging combined with machine learning-based analysis, have the potential to revolutionize clinical surgical imaging. However, these modalities face a shortage of large-scale, representative clinical data for training machine learning-based algorithms. While preclinical animal data are abundantly available through standardized experiments and allow for controlled induction of pathological tissue states, it is not ethically possible to obtain similar data from patients. To leverage this situation, we propose 'xeno-learning', a cross-species know

Independent evaluation of machine learning and deep learning models for breast cancer detection.

Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related mortality worldwide, and despite advances in clinical diagnosis, challenges such as inconclusive imaging results and inter-observer variability highlight the need for complementary computational approaches to support early and accurate detection. In this study, we provide an overview of several machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) algorithms used for breast cancer detection with structured clinical data and imaging data. We applied ML models to structured clinical data which included Wisconsin Breast Cancer Dataset, CSAW-CC d

Long-horizon associative learning as a unifying framework for statistical learning across scales.

Sensory inputs are rich with temporal patterns that unfold across multiple timescales. Uncovering these regularities is essential for anticipating future events and navigating the environment efficiently. Numerous models have been proposed to account for learning at specific temporal scales; however, they are often designed in isolation and rely on narrowly tuned statistical measures, limiting their generalizability to other paradigms. In contrast, humans typically learn without prior knowledge of the underlying structure or the relevant timescale at which regularities occur. Here, we present

Learning Through Retrieval Variability: Benefits and Metacognitive Judgments in Foreign-Language Vocabulary Learning.

Variable practice often enhances long-term learning despite increasing difficulty during acquisition. The present study examined whether variable retrieval practice improves foreign-language vocabulary learning and, if so, whether learners' metacognitive judgments reflect its benefits. Participants studied Lithuanian-English word pairs across four study-test cycles under either constant or variable retrieval practice conditions. In the constant conditions, learners consistently retrieved words in either an easy or difficult direction, whereas in the variable conditions, they retrieved in both

Shortcut learning leads to sex bias in deep learning models for photoacoustic tomography.

PURPOSE: Shortcut learning has been identified as a source of algorithmic unfairness in medical imaging artificial intelligence (AI), but its impact on photoacoustic tomography (PAT), particularly concerning sex bias, remains underexplored. This study investigates this issue using peripheral artery disease (PAD) diagnosis as a specific clinical application. METHODS: To examine the potential for sex bias due to shortcut learning in convolutional neural network (CNNs) and assess how such biases might affect diagnostic predictions, we created training and test datasets with varying PAD prevalenc

Learning to see via epiretinal implant stimulationin silicowith model-based deep reinforcement learning.

OBJECTIVE: Diseases such as age-related macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa cause the degradation of the photoreceptor layer. One approach to restore vision is to electrically stimulate the surviving retinal ganglion cells with a microelectrode array such as epiretinal implants. Epiretinal implants are known to generate visible anisotropic shapes elongated along the axon fascicles of neighboring retinal ganglion cells. Recent work has demonstrated that to obtain isotropic pixel-like shapes, it is possible to map axon fascicles and avoid stimulating them by inactivating electrodes or

Eye-tracking training improves the learning and memory of children with learning difficulty.

Children who experience difficulty in learning at mainstream schools usually are provided with remediation classes after school to facilitate their learning. The present study aims to evaluate an innovative eye-tracking training as possible alternative remediation. Our previous findings showed that children who received eye-tracking training demonstrated improved attention and inhibitory control, and the present randomized controlled study aims to evaluate if eye-tracking training can also enhance the learning and memory of children. Fifty-three primary school students with learning difficulty

The procedural learning deficit hypothesis of language learning disorders: we see some problems.

Impaired procedural learning has been suggested as a possible cause of developmental dyslexia (DD) and specific language impairment (SLI). This study examined the relationship between measures of verbal and non-verbal implicit and explicit learning and measures of language, literacy and arithmetic attainment in a large sample of 7 to 8-year-old children. Measures of verbal explicit learning were correlated with measures of attainment. In contrast, no relationships between measures of implicit learning and attainment were found. Critically, the reliability of the implicit learning tasks was poo

Anatomy of motor learning. II. Subcortical structures and learning by trial and error.

We used positron emission tomography to study motor learning by trial and error. Subjects learned sequences of eight finger movements. Tones generated by a computer told the subjects whether any particular move was correct or incorrect. A control condition was used in which the subjects generated moves, but there was no feedback to indicate success or failure, and so on learning occurred. In this condition (free selection) the subjects were required to make a finger movement on each trial and to vary the movements randomly over trials. The subjects had a free choice of which finger to move on

Sex-Based Medicine Meets Psoriatic Arthritis: Lessons Learned and to Learn.

Humorally associated autoimmune diseases generally show a female predominance whereas ankylosing spondylitis, a disease that overlaps with psoriatic arthritis (PsA), shows a male predominance. The present review ascertains the current knowledge of sex-specific differences related to psoriatic arthritis (PsA), a chronic, inflammatory condition associated with psoriasis. Sex differences may have important implications for clinical research in PsA and in terms of epidemiology (incidence, prevalence, lifetime risk, survival, and mortality), clinical, radiological, and laboratory features, and resp
