Three sympatric Hapalemur species (H. g. griseus, H. aureus, and H. (Prolemur) simus) in Ranomafana National Park, Madagascar are known to eat bamboo food parts that contain cyanide. How these lemurs avoid cyanide poisoning remains unknown. In this study, we tested for the presence/absence of cyanide in bamboo lemur foods and excreta to (1) document patterns of cyanide consumption among species with respect to diet, (2) identify routes of elimination of cyanide from the gastrointestinal tract, and (3) determine whether cyanide is absorbed from the diet. We tested 102 food, urine, and fecal sam

The main objective of this study is to evaluate the humoral response of 33 captive non-human primates from the Friguia zoo Park (Sousse district, Tunisia) following vaccination with an adjuvanted and inactivated rabies virus vaccine. The animals were sampled at day one, then at day 30, day 180 and day 365 post-vaccination. Antibody titration was performed using the FAVN (fluorescent antibody virus neutralisation) method in the national reference laboratory for rabies in Tunisia at the Pasteur Institute of Tunis. One-month post-vaccination, 100% of animals seroconverted, and 76.5% maintained a

Fatal encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV) infections in a ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta), a squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus), three mandrills (Mandrillus sphinx), a chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes), a pygmy hippopotamus (Choeropsis liberiensis), and two Goodfellows tree kangaroos (Dendrolagus goodfellowi) occurred at Taronga Zoo. This is the first description of EMCV in a zoological collection outside of the United States. Regardless of species, the most common clinical presentation was sudden death. The gross pathologic changes were diffuse or focal pallor of the myocardium with occasional marke

OBJECTIVES: Among living Malagasy primates, the family Lemuridae has previously been recognized as presenting a higher mandibular morphological variation than other families. We conducted a quantitative analysis of mandibular size and shape within the five genera (Lemur, Eulemur, Hapalemur, Prolemur, and Varecia) associated with a set of covariables that could explain this variation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used Fourier outline analysis on the left hemimandible of 182 specimens covering the Lemuridae family. The influence of the phylogeny but also seven covariables (genus, diet, sex, sexual

Mouse lemurs (Microcebus spp.) are an exciting new primate model for understanding human aging and disease. In captivity, Microcebus murinus develops human-like ailments of old age after five years (e.g., neurodegeneration analogous to Alzheimer's disease) but can live beyond 12 years. It is believed that wild Microcebus follow a similar pattern of senescence observed in captive animals, but that predation limits their lifespan to four years, thus preventing observance of these diseases in the wild. Testing whether this assumption is true is informative about both Microcebus natural history an

Inefficient glucose metabolism and decreased ATP production in the brain are linked to ageing, cognitive decline, and neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs). This study employed thermodynamic analysis to assess the effect of fish oil supplementation on glucose metabolism in ageing brains. Data from previous studies on glucose metabolism in the aged human brain and grey mouse lemur brains were examined. The results demonstrated that Omega-3 fish oil supplementation in grey mouse lemurs increased entropy generation and decreased Gibbs free energy across all brain regions. Specifically, there was a 47

This article explores some rare sides of twin research. The focus of this article is the sad plight of the Dionne quintuplets, born in Canada in 1934. However, several other studies belong in this category, such as Dr Josef Mengele's horrifying twin research conducted at the Auschwitz concentration camp, Dr John Money's misguided attempt to turn an accidentally castrated male twin into a female, Russian scientists' cruel medical study of conjoined female twins and Dr Peter Neubauer's secret project that tracked the development of separated twins. Reviews of current twin research span twins' re

We determined the combined impacts of habitat degradation and recurrent cyclones on a community of small mammals in a rainforest landscape in Madagascar. We used capture-release and morphometry data of 609 individuals of shrew tenrecs, rodents, and nocturnal lemurs, and vegetation surveys from 360 plots in four sites with different degradation levels for four field seasons (2021-2023) separated by two cyclone events. Combined impacts of degradation and cyclones significantly affected small mammals' diversity and capture abundance and only the body mass of the lesser tufted-tailed rat and brown

OBJECTIVES: Comparative histoanatomy regarding the evolution of epiglottis and preepiglottic space (PES) of primate larynx as the supralaryngeal vocal tract (SVT) is acquired was investigated.
METHODS: Two lemur, one galago, two macaque, two gorilla, and two chimpanzee normal larynges were investigated and compared with human larynges using the whole-organ serial section technique.
RESULTS: Nonhuman primates with the limited pharyngeal space of SVT (lemurs, galago, and macaques, phyletic distant relative of humans) did not have PES. Their epiglottis was composed of cartilage that is not very

BACKGROUND: Four recent transmissions of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease infection by transfusion highlight the need for detailed understanding of blood-related prion pathogenesis. Nonhuman primates are the most relevant models of human prion diseases.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Quantitative flow cytometry with monoclonal antibodies FH11, 3F4, and 6H4 against different parts of the normal cellular form of the prion protein (PrP(C)) was used to evaluate its expression on blood cells of humans, chimpanzees, cynomolgus macaques, rhesus macaques, squirrel monkeys, and microcebe lemurs.

Hydatid disease was detected in 4 nonhuman primates (Galago crassicaudatus, Lemur catta, and 2 Macaca mulatta) at the Oregon Regional Primate Research Center. Involvement extended from 2 1/2 to 7 1/2 years. A 6-cm cyst was surgically removed from the thoracic cavity of 1 macaque; 6 years later multiple cysts were found in its abdominal cavity. Lesions found in the primates at necropsy included compression or displacement of the lungs, hydroureter and hydronephrosis, and distension of the abdomen--all related to impingement of developing cysts.

The traditional view that Old World fruit bats (Megachiroptera) and insect bats (Microchiroptera) are closely related has been challenged by claims that Megachiroptera are the sister group to flying lemurs (Dermoptera) or Primates. We found that the specialized muscles of the rostral part of the wing in Microchiroptera and Megachiroptera receive double innervation by both the facial nerve and cervical spinal nerves, suggesting that bats are monophyletic. Innervation by the facial nerve also occurs in Dermoptera and suggests that bats and Dermoptera share a common ancestor that had wings.

Spontaneous hepatocellular carcinoma has been reported as a relatively common neoplasm in prosimians; however, the cause is unknown. To investigate possible pathogenic mechanisms, the authors performed a review of all adult animals from a captive prosimian population that had postmortem examinations over the past 10 years. They performed a detailed histologic evaluation of all suspected proliferative liver lesions and diagnosed hepatocellular carcinoma in 14 of 145 lemurs (9.7%). Affected animals ranged between the ages of 6 and 40 years old. The tumors had an unusually aggressive growth patte

Study of sequences of dental development and eruption of extant and applicable fossil prosimians, as well as similar data available on Anthropoidea and insectivores, indicates that the ancestral primate stock was characterized by the initial appearance of the anterior dentition, not the molars. From this primitive condition two morphoclines, not one, can be defined with the sharing of derived character states indicating sister-group relationships between Galaginae and Cheriogaleinae and between Lepilemur, Megaladapis, and Adapidae.

In maturing juvenile lemurs and lorises, it was found that the anteriormost lower deciduous premolar migrates forward and may become associated with the teeth of the toothcomb; this is similar to previous observations on the dentition of indriines. The mesial shift of dp2 appears to be associated with the eruption of P2 but, more importantly, also with replacement of the deciduous by the permanent teeth of the toothcomb--which is a period of functional disruption at the front of the jaw. It is suggested that this growth-related phenomenon should not be confused with other aspects of dental dev

OBJECTIVES: Ulnar deviation is a fundamental hand movement reflecting different positional behaviors that characterize primates and other arboreal mammals. Few experimental data exist on the relationship between wrist joint morphology and ulnar deviation of the hand in living primates. This study tests functional relationships between carpal joint anatomy and the degree of ulnar deviation for eight strepsirrhine species representing major locomotor groups.
METHODS: Passive ranges of ulnar deviation were measured from radiographs of the hand of 25 anesthetized subjects using a motion analysis

Angiostrongylus cantonensis is a nematode of public health relevance that parasitizes lungs of rodents and can cause eosinophilic meningoencephalitis in humans. In this study we report a case of meningoencephalitis due to A. cantonensis infection in a geriatric, male black-and-white ruffed lemur (Varecia variegata) at a zoological facility in Atlanta, Georgia, southeastern United States of America. In December 2022, the animal presented with a history of acute hindlimb lameness that progressed to right hindlimb paresis and paralysis with loss of pain sensation. Radiographs revealed possible de
