Identification of candidate chemosensory receptors based on transcriptome analysis in the monophagous insect Protegira songi (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae).

BACKGROUND: Insects perceive chemical cues from conspecifics and hosts through their sensitive chemosensory system. The chemosensory receptors, which are mainly represented by odorant receptors (ORs), ionotropic receptors (IRs), and gustatory receptors (GRs), are highly enriched in the chemosensory tissues and are crucial for perceiving and transducing chemical signals. RESULTS: In this study, we performed a transcriptome analysis of different tissues of Protegira songi, a notorious defoliator that specifically infests the medicinal and rubber plant Eucommia ulmoides and identified 77 candidat

Depleting SfCarE: Innovative strategies for enhancing chlorantraniliprole toxicity through mixing with carbaryl in Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

The sustained application of insecticides has led to the development of resistance. Carboxylesterases (CarEs) play important roles in the resistance and synergism of chlorantraniliprole and carbaryl. In this study, the key Spodoptera frugiperda CarEs gene, SfCarE, was identified. SfCarE was highly expressed at the 4th instar and in the midgut of the 6th instar larvae. Knockdown of SfCarE resulted in significant decrease in CarE activity and an increase in susceptibility to chlorantraniliprole, as well as to the mixture of chlorantraniliprole and carbaryl. Metabolic assays demonstrated that the

VOC Characterization of Byasa hedistus (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae) and Its Visual and Olfactory Responses during Foraging and Courtship.

Color and odor are crucial cues for butterflies during foraging and courtship. While most sexual dimorphic butterflies rely more on vision, our understanding of how butterflies with similar coloration use different signals remains limited. This study investigated the visual and olfactory behavioral responses of the similarly colored butterfly Byasa hedistus during foraging and courtship. While visiting artificial flowers of different colors, we found that B. hedistus exhibits an innate color preference, with a sequence of preferences for red, purple, and blue. The frequency of flower visits by

Expression profile and functional characterization of odorant binding proteins in a forest pest, Dioryctria abietella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae).

In the forest ecosystem dominated by the Pinaceae plants, this boring pest Dioryctria abietella is subject to a variety of odorants derived from host and nonhost plants, in which olfactory-related proteins enriched in antennae are key behavioral modulators for the orientation of feeding and ovipositing hosts. Here, we addressed the odorant binding protein (OBP) gene family in D. abietella. Expression profiles revealed that the majority of OBPs were abundantly expressed in the antennae at a female-biased level. A male-antenna-biased DabiPBP1 was a strong candidate for detecting type I and type

Unsaturated Cuticular Hydrocarbon Components of the Sex Pheromone of Eggplant Fruit Borer, Leucinodes orbonalis Guenée (Lepidoptera: Crambidae).

Leucinodes orbonalis is one of the most damaging insect pests affecting eggplant in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam. While (E)-11-hexadecenyl acetate (E11-16:OAc) and its alcohol, (E)-11-hexadecenol (E11-16:OH), have been identified as major and minor sex pheromone components, respectively, few males were attracted to a blend of these compounds in Vietnamese fields. In order to utilize synthetic pheromone of L. orbonalis as a tool for sustainable pest management programs, we reexamined the pheromone of this species in order to search for other minor components. Mexican rice borer (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) injury to corn greater than to sorghum and sugarcane under field conditions.

The Mexican rice borer, Eoreuma loftini (Dyar) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), is the key pest of sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) in Texas; it can attack several grassy crop and noncrop host plants and has spread into Louisiana. Through small-plot, commercial field, and pheromone trap experiments, this study demonstrates that the pest uses corn, Zea mays L., more than sugarcane and sorghum, Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench, but when corn is harvested in late summer, injury to nearby sugarcane strongly increases during the next approximately equal to 2 mo to harvest. Corn was more infested than sugarcane and s

Toward Sustainable Management of Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae): A Review on the Role of Endophytic Fungi in Crop Protection.

The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda, is a highly polyphagous pest that has rapidly expanded across Africa, Asia, and Oceania, threatening food security and agricultural productivity. Reliance on synthetic insecticides for FAW management is increasingly challenged by insecticide resistance, environmental contamination, and adverse effects on non-target organisms and human health. This review synthesizes current knowledge on the potential of endophytic fungi as a sustainable strategy for FAW management. Following a systematic literature search, 59 original research articles published

Metabolomics of susceptible and insecticide-resistant strains of Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and metatranscriptomics of their midgut-associated microbiota.

The gut microbiota of insects can influence host physiology and, like the host, can be affected by stressors. In this study, we investigated the effects of insecticide exposure on the metabolome and gut microbial metatranscriptome of insecticide resistant and susceptible Spodoptera frugiperda larvae. Metabolomic analysis revealed distinct metabolic profiles influenced by host phenotype and treatment with three insecticides: flubendiamide, spinosad and teflubenzuron. Amino acids, monosaccharides and fatty acids were prominent among the differentially abundant metabolites. Insecticide exposure a

Farnesyl biliverdins IXα are novel ligands of biliproteins from moths of the Noctuoidea superfamily: A chemosystematic view of the Lepidoptera.

Bilins, derived from biliverdin IXα, are known from animals, plants and microorganisms, where they play vital roles as light-absorbing pigments. Bilins occur also in many insects. Recently, we discovered in insects a novel structural type of bilins with a farnesyl substituent at pyrrole ring A of biliverdin IXα. The first of these unusual bilins with a molecular mass of 852 (C48H60O10N4) was identified in Cerura vinula, subsequently in Spodoptera littoralis; both species are members of the Noctuoidea superfamily of moths. From an evolutionary point of view, it was of interest to examine other

Peptide toxin glacontryphan-M is present in the wings of the butterfly Hebomoia glaucippe (Linnaeus, 1758) (Lepidoptera: Pieridae).

Protein profiling has revealed the presence of glacontryphan-M, a peptide toxin identified only in the sea snail genus Conus, in the wings of Hebomoia glaucippe (HG). The wings and body of HG were homogenized and the proteins were extracted and analyzed by 2D gel electrophoresis with subsequent in-gel digestion. Posttranslational protein modifications were detected and analyzed by nano-LC-MS/MS. An antibody was generated against glacontryphan-M, and protein extracts from the wings of HG samples from Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines were tested by immunoblotting.
