OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of hematologic toxicity and leukopenia in locally advanced cervical cancer patients undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT).
STUDY DESIGN: Data of consecutive patients undergoing platinum-based NACT followed by surgery were retrospectively searched in order to evaluate the impact of chemotherapy-related toxicity on survival outcomes. Toxicity was graded per the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAEv.4.03). Survival outcomes were evaluated using Kaplan-Meir and Cox hazard models.

Recent attempts to reduce weight by patients with anorexia nervosa have sometimes led to life-threatening hematologic complications. BACKGROUND: In the current era of transplantation and therapeutic endoscopy, the role of the distal splenorenal shunt (DSRS) for portal hypertension (PH) has diminished. We reviewed the outcome of the use of DSRS in children to determine the usefulness of this operation.
METHODS: In the follow-up course for PH from 1987 to 2006, 15 patients who developed severe thrombocytopenia (platelet count <50 x 10(3)/mm(3)) and/or leukopenia (WBC count <3000/mm(3)) with normal liver function were referred for DSRS. Primary diagnosis was portal vein thrombosis (N=10) and congenital hepatic fibrosis (N=5).

A total of 115 exposed individuals diagnosed as arsenicosis patients were randomly selected from four known arsenic endemic villages, and age-matched 120 unexposed subjects were enrolled in the study program. We present an infant with acute fever, thrombocytopenia, and leukopenia, coming from an endemic region for tick-borne encephalitis, human granulocytic anaplasmosis, and hantavirus infection. The primary human herpesvirus 6 infection was diagnosed by seroconversion of specific IgM and IgG and by identification of viral DNA in the acute patient's serum.
