[What can we learn in future from the data of the German Arthroplasty Registry (EPRD) in comparison to other registries?].

The German Arthroplasty Registry (EPRD) was founded in 2010 and has been in full operation since 2014. Previous attempts at a systematic data collection of elective and non-elective knee and hip replacement in Germany failed mainly because of the long-term lack of funding. The EPRD is an interdisciplinary collaborative partnership between the German Association of Orthopedics and Orthopedic Surgery (DGOOC), all implant manufacturers of the German Medical Technology Association (BVMed), health insurers (AOK and the Association of Additional Healthcare Insurance) and hospitals (German Hospital F

Monitoring Guideline Adherence in Severe Traumatic Brain Injury.

Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) significantly impact global health, often resulting in death or long-term disability. We developed a quality dashboard to monitor adherence to severe TBI guidelines, leveraging data from Rennes University Hospital's clinical data warehouse collected between January 2020 and December 2023. We included 193 patients from the surgical ICU who were over 18 years old and excluded those without adequate intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring data. The study utilized the French Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Society guidelines and the Brain Trauma Foundation's 4th Gui

Trends in indications for caesarean sections over 7 years in a Welsh district general hospital.

The National Sentinel Caesarean Section (CS) Audit showed that the overall CS rate was 21.5% in England and Wales. There have been concerns about the rising CS rate in the UK. We reviewed whether there were any changes in indications for CS over 7 years (2001-2007) in our district general hospital. A database was written and used to record data about each CS, electronically. A library of entries was used to record the indications for all caesarean sections. The data were analysed by each of the years from 2001 to 2007. The overall CS rate in the hospital was nearly 30% in 2007, a rise from 26%

Whole genome sequencing analysis of Candida glabrata isolates collected from patients with selected drug-resistant candidiasis hospitalized in Eastern Poland.

The epidemiology data for candidiasis indicate an increase in Candida glabrata infections. Moreover, several reports have shown an increasing number of drug-resistant cases of these infections. The source of drug resistance can often be traced to genetic mutations in genes related to a drug's mechanism of action. Therefore, we conducted whole genome sequencing of several drug-resistant isolates of Candida glabrata collected from patients hospitalized in Eastern Poland to assess whether mutations in selected genes correlated with susceptibility analysis results. The fungal species from patient

Evaluation of the usefulness of culture of induced sputum and the optimal timing for the collection of a good-quality sputum sample to identify causative pathogen of community-acquired pneumonia in young children: A prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: The usefulness of an induced sputum in the identification of causative bacteria of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in young children is controversial. This study aimed to investigate the significance of the implementation of an induced sputum culture among children with CAP and the impact of prior use of antimicrobial agents on the quality of the sample and result of the culture. METHODS: This prospective study included 96 children hospitalized for acute bacterial CAP whose sputum samples were collected by suctioning from the hypopharynx through the nose. The samples were evalu

Systematic review and meta-analysis of the effect of continuous cerebrospinal fluid drainage on keyhole surgery during the perioperative period.

BACKGROUND: Lumbar continuous drainage of fluid (LCDF) has become more widely used in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological diseases in recent years. The use of LCDF can enable a better understanding of the patient's condition and reduce the incidence of related complications. LCDF can also affect complications of perforation surgery, including mortality during hospitalization, cerebral vasospasm (CVS), bleeding, and aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). METHODS: Articles published from library construction to April 2021 were searched for in the English-language databases PubMed, C

Whole animal automated platform for drug discovery against multi-drug resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

Staphylococcus aureus, the leading cause of hospital-acquired infections in the United States, is also pathogenic to the model nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. The C. elegans-S. aureus infection model was previously carried out on solid agar plates where the bacteriovorous C. elegans feeds on a lawn of S. aureus. However, agar-based assays are not amenable to large scale screens for antibacterial compounds. We have developed a high throughput liquid screening assay that uses robotic instrumentation to dispense a precise amount of methicillin resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and worms in 384-well ass

Genes contributing to Staphylococcus aureus fitness in abscess- and infection-related ecologies.

UNLABELLED: Staphylococcus aureus is a leading cause of both community- and hospital-acquired infections that are increasingly antibiotic resistant. The emergence of S. aureus resistance to even last-line antibiotics heightens the need for the development of new drugs with novel targets. We generated a highly saturated transposon insertion mutant library in the genome of S. aureus and used Tn-seq analysis to probe the entire genome, with unprecedented resolution and sensitivity, for genes of importance in infection. We further identified genes contributing to fitness in various infected compar
