Hypomanic symptoms caused by herpes simplex encephalitis.

This is a case report of a brief episode of rather typical hypomanic symptoms in the acute phase of presumed herpes simplex encephalitis in a young woman. I infer that the hypomanic episode was triggered from the anterior inferomedial temporal lobe or limbic system, the presumed cerebral substrate of the emotions in general, and review the literature relating to the occurrence of hypomania associated with structural disease of the nervous system.

Transient global amnesia associated with a single metastasis in the non-dominant hemisphere. Case report.

A patient in whom transient global amnesia (TGA) led to the diagnosis of a metastasis of a transition-cell carcinoma of the bladder to the non-dominant hemisphere is described. In previously reported cases of TGA associated with brain tumors, the tumors involved either the dominant or both hemispheres. The etiology of TGA associated with a brain tumor is most likely vascular, as suggested by the sudden development and the transitory character of the event. In contrast to the "common" form of TGA (where both temporal lobes suffer temporary ischemia), in these patients only one side of the limbi

A study on brain neuronal activation based on the load in upper limb exercise (STROBE).

This study aimed to determine the level of brain activation in separate regions, including the lobes, cerebellum, and limbic system, depending on the weight of an object during elbow flexion and extension exercise using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The study was conducted on ten male undergraduates (22.4 ± 1.2 years). The functional images of the brain were obtained using the 3T MRI. The participants performed upper limb flexion and extension exercise at a constant speed and as the weight of the object for lifting was varied (0 g and 1000 g). The experiment consisted of four b

Cerebellar pathology in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the main causes of dementia in the western world. It is clinically characterized by memory impairment, deterioration of intellectual faculties and loss of professional skills. AD brains exhibit significant atrophy, predominantly in the temporal and parietal lobes, while light microscopy reveals deposition of senile plaques and neurofibrillary degeneration initially in the entorhinal cortex, the hippocampus, and in the acoustic and visual cortices, in the frontal lobe and the cerebellum in the advanced stages. Dendritic and spinal pathology, as well as loss of

Takotsubo syndrome associated with autoimmune limbic encephalitis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Central nervous system diseases are common triggers of Takotsubo syndrome. We herein report a rare case of Takotsubo syndrome associated with autoimmune limbic encephalitis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 68-year-old Japanese woman presented to our emergency room with disturbed consciousness. At admission, she showed hypoxemia. Left ventriculography showed akinesia in the middle part of the left ventricle and hyperkinesia in the apical and basal parts of the left ventricle, and the diagnosis of midventricular Takotsubo syndrome was established. However, after an improvement in disturbed con

Lateralization of the hippocampus: A review of molecular, functional, and physiological properties in health and disease.

The hippocampus is a part of the brain's medial temporal lobe that is located under the cortex. It belongs to the limbic system and helps to collect and transfer information from short-term to long-term memory, as well as spatial orientation in each mammalian brain hemisphere. After more than two centuries of research in brain asymmetry, the hippocampus has attracted much attention in the study of brain lateralization. The hippocampus is very important in cognitive disorders, related to seizures and dementia, such as epilepsy and Alzheimer's disease. In addition, the motivation to study the hi

Exposure in fetus of methylazoxymethanol in the rat alters brain neurotrophins' levels and brain cells' proliferation.

Changes during gestation have been shown to induce brain maldevelopment associated with changes in neurotrophins as nerve growth factor (NGF), brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and neuropsychiatric disorders in humans. A rat model of altered prenatal brain development resembling the onset of schizophrenia has been obtained by administering in fetus methylazoxymethanol (MAM) at gestational day 12 which impairs the growth of limbic pathways between the entorhinal cortex and the hippocampus. Using the MAM model we studied in young rats the brain levels of both NGF/BDNF and their main recep

Antibodies to glutamic acid decarboxylase define a form of limbic encephalitis.

OBJECTIVE: Antibodies to glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) have been described in a few patients with temporal lobe epilepsies consistent with limbic encephalitis (LE). We studied a cohort of patients with recent-onset temporal lobe epilepsy caused by LE to test for GAD antibody positivity and response to immunotherapies. METHODS: Over a period of 3.75 years, 138 patients aged >or=18 years investigated at the Department of Epileptology, University of Bonn, for recent-onset epilepsy were prospectively collected and studied for cliniconeuroradiological features of LE, autoantibodies, and treatm

Social cognition in schizophrenia: similarities and differences of emotional perception from patients with focal frontal lesions.

The structural and functional abnormalities of the frontal lobes, the region implicated in social information processing, have been suspected to underlie social cognitive impairments in schizophrenia. However, multiple structures, including the limbic/paralimbic areas that are also important for social cognition, have been reported to be abnormal in schizophrenia. The aim of this study is to investigate the extent to which the frontal lobe dysfunction accounts for social cognitive impairments in schizophrenia by comparing with patients who have focal frontal lobe injuries. Social cognitive abi

Improvement in word-fluency performance in Parkinson's disease by administration of electromagnetic fields.

The association between degeneration of the nigrostriatal dopamine (DA) system and the motor manifestations of Parkinson's disease (PD) provided the impetus for the development of DA replacement therapy. However, clinical experience has demonstrated that DA-ergic drugs, while attenuating the motor symptoms of PD, have little or no consistent effect on the mental and cognitive symptoms of the disease which are thought to be related partly to degeneration of the meso-cortico-limbic DA system. Thus, failure of DA-ergic drugs to improve the mental and cognitive deficits of PD indicates that these

Stress-Associated Molecular and Cellular Hippocampal Mechanisms Common for Epilepsy and Comorbid Depressive Disorders.

The review discusses molecular and cellular mechanisms common to the temporal lobe epileptogenesis/epilepsy and depressive disorders. Comorbid temporal lobe epilepsy and depression are associated with dysfunction of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis. Excessive glucocorticoids disrupt the function and impair the structure of the hippocampus, a brain region key to learning, memory, and emotions. Selective vulnerability of the hippocampus to stress, mediated by the reception of glucocorticoid hormones secreted during stress, is the price of the high functional plasticity and pleiotro

Medial temporal atrophy in early and late-onset Alzheimer's disease.

Late-onset and early-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD, EOAD) affect different neural systems and may be separate nosographic entities. The most striking differences are in the medial temporal lobe, severely affected in LOAD and relatively spared in EOAD. We assessed amygdalar morphology and volume in 18 LOAD and 18 EOAD patients and 36 aged-matched controls and explored their relationship with the hippocampal volume. Three-dimensional amygdalar shape was reconstructed with the radial atrophy mapping technique, hippocampal volume was measured using a manual method. Atrophy was greater in LOAD th

Interrelations of Cerebral Hemodynamics with Parameters of Cardiac Function and Brain Tissue in Patients with Ischemic Stroke.

We analyzed interrelations between the cerebral blood flow, cardiac output, and condition of the brain substance in 530 patients with ischemic stroke. Dependencies between the linear blood flow velocities in all arteries supplying the brain, as well as between the total volume blood flow through the internal carotid arteries and left ventricular stroke volume were revealed. The severity of atrophy was maximum in the parietal lobes (median 1.5 (1.0; 2.0)) and minimum in the occipital lobes (median 0.5 (0; 1.0)). Temporal lobes cortical atrophy significantly correlated with changes in the limbic

Fulminant Anti-GAD antibody encephalitis presenting with status epilepticus requiring aggressive immunosuppression.

Antibodies against glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) are reported in association with numerous neurological conditions including temporal lobe epilepsy and limbic encephalitis. We report a case of Anti-GAD-Antibody associated encephalitis presenting with epilepsia partialis continua (EPC) progressing to a fulminant encephalopathy preferentially affecting the frontal lobes associated with coma and refractory status epilepticus. The abnormalities identified on MRI included marked bilateral frontal lobe involvement which has not been reported in other auto-immune encephalitides and may be specifi

Delusions, illusions and hallucinations in epilepsy: 2. Complex phenomena and psychosis.

In this second paper the clinical features and electrophysiological underpinnings of more complex psychotic states associated with epilepsy are reviewed. (a) Complex partial status epilepticus, in particular of temporal lobe origin, may result in mental states remarkably similar to those seen in the primary psychoses. This non-convulsive state is associated with prolonged epileptic discharges on intracranial stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) in hippocampal and other mesial temporal structures, sometimes without abnormalities on the scalp EEG. Where hallucinatory or psychotic symptomatology d

Atypical multiple system atrophy is a new subtype of frontotemporal lobar degeneration: frontotemporal lobar degeneration associated with α-synuclein.

Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a sporadic neurodegenerative disease clinically characterized by cerebellar signs, parkinsonism, and autonomic dysfunction. Pathologically, MSA is an α-synucleinopathy affecting striatonigral and olivopontocerebellar systems, while neocortical and limbic involvement is usually minimal. In this study, we describe four patients with atypical MSA with clinical features consistent with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), including two with corticobasal syndrome, one with progressive non-fluent aphasia, and one with behavioral variant FTD. None had autonomic dysfunction.
