GUT-DERIVED UREMIC TOXICITY IN LIONS (PANTHERA LEO) WITH CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE: A POTENTIAL THERAPEUTIC TARGET?

Lions (Panthera leo) share an intrinsic susceptibility to chronic kidney disease (CKD) with other species of the Felidae. Interestingly, specific gut-derived uremic toxins-indoxyl sulfate, p-cresyl sulfate, and trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO)-find their origin in amino acids highly abundant in the strict carnivorous feline diet. These toxins are well-recognized mediators of renal tubular inflammation and are associated with disease progression in cats. Therefore, a potential causal involvement of gut-derived uremic toxicity in the pathophysiology of CKD can be hypothesized in Felidae. However, i

Deep dives and high tissue density increase mean dive costs in California sea lions (Zalophus californianus).

Diving is central to the foraging strategies of many marine mammals and seabirds. Still, the effect of dive depth on foraging cost remains elusive because energy expenditure is difficult to measure at fine temporal scales in wild animals. We used depth and acceleration data from eight lactating California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) to model body density and investigate the effect of dive depth and tissue density on rates of energy expenditure. We calculated body density in 5 s intervals from the rate of gliding descent. We modeled body density across depth in each dive, revealing high

Pup mortality in New Zealand sea lions (Phocarctos hookeri) at Enderby Island, Auckland Islands, 2013-18.

New Zealand sea lions (Phocarctos hookeri) are an endemic and endangered species. Pup mortality at Enderby Island (50.5°S, 166.28°E) in the New Zealand sub-Antarctic has been well studied, with subsequent investigations yielding more intricate detail of the causes of mortality, as new diagnostic methods become available. Klebsiella pneumoniae was first reported in 2001-02 at this site, causing a pup mortality epizootic and is now known to be present at several colonies. This bacterium is a common mucosal commensal of humans and animals, however the agent found in pups at necropsy is a hypervir

Proteomic Analysis of Urine from California Sea Lions ( Zalophus californianus): A Resource for Urinary Biomarker Discovery.

Urinary markers for the assessment of kidney diseases in wild animals are limited, in part, due to the lack of urinary proteome data, especially for marine mammals. One of the most prevalent kidney diseases in marine mammals is caused by Leptospira interrogans, which is the second most common etiology linked to stranding of California sea lions ( Zalophus californianus). Urine proteins from 11 sea lions with leptospirosis kidney disease and eight sea lions without leptospirosis or kidney disease were analyzed using shotgun proteomics. In total, 2694 protein groups were identified, and 316 were

Characterization of a degenerative cardiomyopathy associated with domoic acid toxicity in California sea lions (Zalophus californianus).

Domoic acid, produced by marine algae, can cause acute and chronic neurologic sequela in California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) from acute toxicity or sublethal exposure. Eight sea lions, representing acute and chronic cases, both sexes, and all age classes, were selected to demonstrate a concurrent degenerative cardiomyopathy. Critical aspects of characterizing the cardiomyopathy by lesion distribution and morphology were the development of a heart dissection and tissue-trimming protocol and the delineation of the cardiac conducting system by histomorphology and immunohistochemistry fo

Risk factors for an outbreak of leptospirosis in California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) in California, 2004.

Leptospirosis has been reported in California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) since 1970; however, the source of infection and mode of transmission remain unknown. To elucidate these features, demographic and environmental risk factors for leptospirosis were evaluated. California sea lion stranding records from northern California for 2004 were used to identify cases of leptospirosis (n = 316) and controls (n = 143). Demographic characteristics (age class, sex) and environmental factors, representing surrogates for exposure to dogs, cattle, rainfall, and freshwater sources, were compared be

Occurrence of Ocular Disorders in California Sea Lions Under Human Care: Comparing Freshwater and Saltwater Housing Conditions.

California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) are susceptible to various ocular diseases, with some literature suggesting a heightened risk for those kept in freshwater pools as opposed to saltwater. Given the potential implications of housing conditions on animal health, we wanted to analyze the ocular health of two distinct groups of California sea lions kept at Nuremberg Zoo, one housed in freshwater and the other in saltwater. Data extracted from the animals' medical records during a ten-year period were used to compare the incidence of eye conditions and other medical conditions observed.

Measurement of Intraocular Pressure Using Rebound Tonometry in Anesthetized Free-ranging South American Sea Lions (Otaria byronia).

Intraocular pressures (IOPs) were measured using a rebound tonometer in 56 free-ranging adult South American sea lions (Otaria byronia) from Punta San Juan, Peru. All animals were anesthetized using medetomidine, midazolam, and butorphanol and determined to be in good health. No ocular abnormalities were observed affecting the cornea or ocular adnexa. Field conditions precluded evaluation of the lens and posterior segment of the eye. Mean (SD) IOP values for males (n=37) were 31±11 mmHg (right eye) and 31±9 mmHg (left eye). The same values for females (n=19) were 24±9 mmHg in the left eye and

An empirical case study examining effectiveness of environmental enrichment in two captive Australian Sea Lions (Neophoca cinerea).

This case study examined the effect of environmental enrichment on the activity budgets of a male and female Australian Sea Lion (Neophoca cinerea) housed together at Adelaide Zoo. Using non-food-related (intrinsic) and food-related (extrinsic) enrichment objects, the study conducted an ABABA (withdrawal) experimental design over a 30-day period (180 hr). The study expected extrinsically reinforcing objects to be more effective than intrinsically reinforcing objects in reducing pattern swimming. The male sea lion spent more than 45% of scans engaged in pattern swimming during the initial basel

Losartan to Improve Outcomes after multi-ligament kNee injury (LION Trial).

BACKGROUND: Multi-ligament knee injuries (MLKI) are complex injury patterns that affect two or more ligaments of the knee. Although surgical intervention can improve functional and clinical outcomes, a large percentage of patients are unable to return to preoperative activity levels. One reason for this is loss of knee range of motion (ROM), which characterizes the exaggerated pro-inflammatory environment of arthrofibrosis and is associated with future osteoarthritis risk. The purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of a 30-day course of losartan, a common angiotensin II antagonis

Systemic apolipoprotein C-III amyloidosis in an Asian lion (Panthera leo persica).

Apolipoprotein C-III (ApoC-III) amyloidosis is an extremely rare systemic amyloidosis previously reported only in humans and white lions. This report describes the first case of ApoC-III amyloidosis in an Asian lion (16-year-old male) that died with clinical manifestations of renal failure. Histopathological and ultrastructural examinations identified amyloid deposits predominantly at the renal corticomedullary junction. Mass spectrometry and immunohistochemistry identified ApoC-III as an amyloid precursor protein. Sequencing of the lion's APOC3 gene found no pathogenic mutations, although lio

Multidisciplinary reconstruction of complex cranio-scalp trauma in a patient with a domestic lion attack.

INTRODUCTION: Severe animal attacks by large predators, such as lions, are rare but devastating, often resulting in life-threatening injuries. These cases require immediate surgical intervention because of the complexity and severity of the injury. This report describes the multidisciplinary management of an adolescent who sustained extensive trauma following a pet-lion attack. CASE PRESENTATION: A 17-year-old male was brought to the emergency department by his father after a pet lion attack. He sustained severe injuries to the scalp, chest, arms, and face, along with a depressed skull fractu

Getting to the Meat of It: The Effects of a Captive Diet upon the Skull Morphology of the Lion and Tiger.

Zoo animals are crucial for conserving and potentially re-introducing species to the wild, yet it is known that the morphology of captive animals differs from that of wild animals. It is important to know how and why zoo and wild animal morphology differs to better care for captive animals and enhance their survival in reintroductions, and to understand how plasticity may influence morphology, which is supposedly indicative of evolutionary relationships. Using museum collections, we took 56 morphological measurements of skulls and mandibles from 617 captive and wild lions and tigers, reflectin

Numeric and morphological studies of the African lion (Panthera leo leo) pectoral limb.

BACKGROUND: The Importance of the appendicular skeleton in the conformation, shape and physiology of wild animals especially carnivores for adaptation and survival cannot be overemphasized, as limited and obsolete information on the bones of the forelimb necessitated this study. Matured adult African lions (Male and female) that weighed 173 kg and 112 kg were obtained at different times after post mortem examinations of their carcasses. Bone preparation was achieved via cold water maceration after proper skin and muscle removal to a barest minimum. RESULTS: The acromion process of the scapula
