BACKGROUND: Peer review in Team-based learning (TBL) exists for three key reasons: to promote reflection on individual behaviours; provide opportunities to develop professional skills; and prevent 'free riders' who fail to contribute effectively to team discussions. A well-developed process that engages students is needed. However, evidence suggests it remains a difficult task to effectively incorporate into TBL. The purpose of this study was to assess medical students' ability to provide written feedback to their peers in TBL, and to explore students' perception of the process, using the conc

This study examined knowledge about dyslexia among Chinese-speaking early literacy teachers in Mainland China. A total of 516 teachers, including 203 kindergarten teachers from developed regions (KDRs), 166 primary school teachers from developed regions (PDRs), and 147 primary school teachers from less developed regions (PLDRs), completed a survey measuring knowledge about dyslexia in three domains: general information, symptoms/diagnosis, and treatment. PLDRs scored significantly lower on the total scale and each of the subscales than KDRs and PDRs, with the latter two not significantly diffe

Recent progress in genomic research has raised expectations for the development of personalized preventive medicine, although genomics-related literacy of patients will be essential. Thus, enhancing genomics-related literacy is crucial, particularly for individuals with low genomics-related literacy because they might otherwise miss the opportunity to receive personalized preventive care. This should be especially emphasized when a lack of genomics-related literacy is associated with elevated disease risk, because patients could therefore be deprived of the added benefits of preventive interve

BACKGROUND: Relatively little knowledge is available to date about health literacy among the general population in Europe. It is important to gain insights into health literacy competences among the general population, as this might contribute to more effective health promotion and help clarify socio-economic disparities in health. This paper is part of the European Health Literacy Survey (HLS-EU). It aims to add to the body of theoretical knowledge about health literacy by measuring perceived difficulties with health information in various domains of health, looking at a number of competences

Historically, children with hearing loss (HL) are often poor readers. In this article, the authors present two divergent groups of children with HL who have better than average literacy outcomes, children with Pervasive Exposure to Sign Language (PESL) and children who are Auditory-Verbal Communicators (AVCs). Outside-in and inside-in factors contributing to literacy development in the two groups of children are discussed with an emergent literacy perspective. Effective intervention strategies that can be used with all children with HL are highlighted.

BACKGROUND: As telemedicine becomes a core component of modern healthcare, its effective application involves more than just the use of digital tools. An evolving skill set is required for current and future clinicians to adapt to this environment. Telementoring is a subset of telemedicine that involves clinician-to-clinician interaction, providing remote expert guidance in clinical care and medical education, with the potential to reduce global disparities. Yet, how trainees and mentors adapt to this virtual setting for effective learning remains unclear. To generate transferable insights acr

Large Vision-Language Models (LVLMs) have shown remarkable capabilities in visualization interpretation, yet it remains unclear whether their responses reflect genuine reasoning over visual evidence or the influence of factual priors learned during training. Current evaluation methods mix these two sources, obscuring when correct visual interpretation is overridden by memorized factual knowledge. We present a disentanglement framework that systematically isolates visual correctness from factual correctness, revealing fundamental validity limitations in existing visualization literacy assessmen

BACKGROUND: Physical literacy integrates physical, affective, cognitive and social elements into a holistic framework for physical activity. Despite the increasing recognition of physical literacy across many sectors, the entire field lacks a prospective roadmap for research, practice and policy.
OBJECTIVE: Seeking to determine the content of a 'Global Physical Literacy (GloPL) Action Framework,' this study aimed to define goals, principles, actions and pathways that can advance the physical literacy field worldwide.
METHODS: A group Delphi study (based on published protocol) engaged 59 phys

Early literacy development is shaped by children's linguistic experiences across home, school, and social environments. For bilingual children, literacy acquisition involves interactions among language exposure, metalinguistic awareness, family practices, and opportunities for social participation. This qualitative descriptive study aimed to explore parents' experiences and perspectives regarding home-based literacy practices during bilingual children's transition to literacy. The participants consisted of 30 parents from Arabic-speaking bilingual families living in socioeconomically disadvant

INTRODUCTION: This study examined how instructional approach (skills-based instruction [SBI] versus thinking-based instruction [TBI]) and task type (structured tasks [STT] versus open-ended tasks [OET]) influence university students' AI literacy performance through autonomy, competence, and relatedness.
METHODS: A randomized 2 × 2 between-subjects experiment was conducted with 320 university students assigned equally to four conditions. Participants received video-based instruction and subsequently completed an AIGC image-generation task. AI literacy performance was assessed using an objectiv

Health literacy is a foundational component of providing accessible pediatric care, influencing whether families can understand, access, and use health information. As families increasingly rely on online health resources, health literacy skills applied to digital information, or e-health literacy, has become an evolving dimension of pediatric health literacy. The concept of health literacy extends beyond an individual's abilities, intersecting with the demands placed on individuals by healthcare systems. There is a growing focus on organizational health literacy (OHL), which reflects how effe

BACKGROUND: Social inequalities in health care remain a pressing issue with direct consequences for treatment outcomes. One complex mechanism contributing to this inequality involves patient's health literacy - including their ability to perceive a medical need and understand the availability of care. This scoping review aims to examine whether economically disadvantaged groups are at greater risk of low health literacy and to identify potential intervention targets to improve health care access and equity.
METHODS: We systematically searched MEDLINE (Ovid) in May 2022 and again in November 2

AIM: Explore health literacy (HL) among parents of children with anorectal malformation (ARM) and identify the predictors of HL.
METHOD: Parents of children < 16 years treated for ARM were invited to complete the Health Literacy Questionnaire-Parent (HLQ-p), General Self-efficacy Scale (GSES), electronic Health Literacy-Scale (eHEALS) and a study-specific questionnaire. Demographic data were collected. Ethical approval was obtained.
RESULTS: 137 parents (40% fathers) of 105 children (median age 7.1 years) participated. The highest HL scores were in managing the child's health and engaging wi

INTRODUCTION: As our growing population demonstrates a significant increase in the incidence of thyroid cancer, so does patient access to their medical records. Poor health literacy and understanding of disease severity, underscores the importance of effective and accessible patient-doctor communication. No previous studies on patient understanding of thyroid pathology reports exist; therefore, we sought to characterize health literacy in this population.
METHODS: Using a modified Delphi technique, a 12-question multiple-choice survey regarding common pathology terms with possible definitions

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol health literacy is critical for informed consumer decision making but has yet received limited attention in public health research. We therefore seek to measure alcohol health literacy and its educational distribution in Germany.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we developed and applied a brief nine-item questionnaire on alcohol health literacy in an adult convenience sample (n = 391; February to April 2023). The association of educational attainment with 'insufficient' alcohol health literacy was tested in adjusted logistic regression models.
RESULTS: Insufficie

Mental illness accounts for high levels of morbidity, mortality and poor quality of life among young people. Depression, anxiety, conduct issues and hyperactive disorder account for 13% of the global burden of disease that affects one in seven adolescents. In Kenya, not much is documented about the mental health of non-school-going adolescents, and yet they make up about 1.8 million of the country's population. An ethnographic study by Focus Group Discussions with 32 rural northern Kenya Turkana-based adolescents divided into school and nonschool groups was conducted. We read out vignettes in
