Lithium inhibits the modulatory effects of morphine on susceptibility to pentylenetetrazole-induced clonic seizure in mice: involvement of a nitric oxide pathway.

Lithium has been reported to inhibit opioid-induced properties. The present study examined the effect of acute and chronic administration of lithium chloride (LiCl) on morphine's biphasic modulation of susceptibility to pentylenetetrazole (PTZ)-induced clonic seizure in mice. We also examined the possible involvement of nitric oxide (NO) pathway in lithium effect. Both acute (0.1 and 1 mg/kg) and chronic (same doses, 21 consecutive days) administration of LiCl completely inhibited the anticonvulsant and proconvulsant effects of morphine (at doses 1 and 30 mg/kg, respectively). A very low and p

Carboxymethylcellulose reinforced, double-network hydrogel-based strain sensor with superior sensing stability for long-term monitoring.

Hydrogel-based strain sensors have garnered significant attention for their potential for human health monitoring. However, its practical application has been hindered by water loss, freezing, and structural impairment during long-term motion monitoring. Here, a strain sensor based on double-network (DN) hydrogel of polyacrylamide (PAAm)/carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) was developed in a ternary solvent system of lithium chloride (LiCl)/ethylene glycol (EG)/H2O through a facile one-pot radical polymerization strategy. The incorporation of EG effectively mitigated the hydration of lithium salts by

An immunodeficient child with inflammatory bowel disease: involvement of cyclic nucleotides and effects of lithium.

A 3-year-old male with inflammatory bowel disease and hypogammaglobulinemia was found to have decreased T lymphocyte function. His serum was shown to depress normal T cell proliferative responses to phytohemagglutinin. Incorporation of lithium chloride to in vitro cultures enhanced autologous lymphocyte responses to phytohemagglutinin. Since lithium acts by inhibiting cAMP production, the child's lymphocytes were postulated to have increased levels of cAMP. Both lymphocytes and serum were shown to contain elevated levels of cAMP. In vivo therapy with lithium citrate was initiated and enhanced

Protective effect of metformin on lithium-induced nephrogenic diabetes insipidus: An experimental study in rats.

BACKGROUND: Lithium is widely used in the treatment of bipolar disorders and may lead to nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (NDI), following long-term treatment. Metformin is considered the preferred initial therapy for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). OBJECTIVES: To investigate the protective effect of metformin on the kidney damage caused by lithium administration. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Using an animal model of chronic lithium-induced NDI, rats were divided into 4 groups: sham, metformin, lithium, and lithium + metformin. The effects of these treatments were examined using serum e

Mesenchymal stem cells primed with valproate and lithium robustly migrate to infarcted regions and facilitate recovery in a stroke model.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The migratory efficiency of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) toward cerebral infarct after transplantation is limited. Valproate (VPA) and lithium enhance in vitro migration of MSC by upregulating CXC chemokine receptor 4 and matrix metalloproteinase-9, respectively. Ability of VPA and lithium to promote MSC homing and to improve functional recovery was assessed in a rat model of cerebral ischemia. METHODS: MSC primed with VPA (2.5 mmol/L, 3 hours) and/or lithium chloride (2.5 mmol/L, 24 hours) were transplanted into rats 24 hours after transient middle cerebral artery occ

Osmotic and hormonal stimulation of the third ventricular region of ducks: antidiuretic, circulatory and local neuronal responses.

By means of local microperfusion of the 3rd cerebral ventricle, antidiuretic and circulatory responses to stimulations with various hypertonic solutions and norepinephrine were analyzed in conscious ducks. The results suggest ionic rather than osmometric responsiveness of periventricular osmoreceptive elements, which is in line with single unit recordings of periventricular neurons tested in vitro for their osmoresponsiveness. These neurons were located subependymally at the site of greatest responsiveness in vivo, and corresponded to morphologically identified neurons projecting to the neuroe

Prevention of MPTP (N-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine) dopaminergic neurotoxicity in mice by chronic lithium: involvements of Bcl-2 and Bax.

Lithium has been reported to exert neuroprotective activity in several neuronal cell cultures and in vivo models against glutamate toxicity. Since this action was reported to be associated with alterations in the antiapoptotic Bcl-2 family proteins, the effect of chronic lithium diet on the ability of the parkinsonism neurotoxin, N-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) to deplete striatal dopamine in mice was determined. Mice were fed for with a diet containing 1.1, 2.2, 3.3, and 4.4 g/kg lithium chloride (LiCl) for 4 weeks, during which time serum levels of lithium were monitored.

Assembling CoSn3 nanoparticles on multiwalled carbon nanotubes with enhanced lithium storage properties.

CoSn(3) nanoparticles have been successfully assembled on noncovalently poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride)-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) via a chemical reduction method in a polyol system. The influences of the surface functionality and the reaction temperature on the synthesis of uniform CoSn(3)-MWCNTs nanohybrids have been investigated. The as-synthesized CoSn(3)-MWCNTs nanohybrids have been applied as anodes for lithium-ion batteries, and show better lithium storage performance compared to the bare CoSn(3) nanoparticles and MWCNTs. The combining of MWCNTs that can

Elevated nociceptive thresholds in rats with multifocal brain damage induced with single subcutaneous injections of lithium and pilocarpine.

To quantify the variability in thermal pain perception of rats with chemically induced brain injury following subcutaneous lithium and pilocarpine administration, 9 female Wistar rats were subjected to a nociceptive (hotplate) paradigm. At approximately 200 days of age, subjects were injected subcutaneously with 3 mEq/kg of lithium chloride followed 4 hr. later by 30 mg/kg of the cholinergic agonist pilocarpine to generate lesions that mimic human temporal lobe (limbic) epilepsy. Over 2 trials 4 of 9 subjects exhibited thermal latencies that exceeded 60 sec. while the remaining subjects obtain

Reduced palatability in lithium- and activity-based, but not in amphetamine-based, taste aversion learning.

Conditioned taste aversions (CTA) based on lithium chloride (Experiment 1), amphetamine (Experiment 2), and wheel running (Experiment 3) were examined using the analysis of the microstructure of licking to measure the palatability of the taste serving as the conditioned stimulus (CS). Pairing saccharin with amphetamine reduced saccharin intake without reducing the size of licking clusters, initial lick rate, or the distribution of inter-lick intervals (ILIs) within a cluster. By contrast, pairing saccharin with lithium or wheel-running reduced saccharin intake as well as lick cluster size, ini

[Effect of lithium on the renal excretory function and Na, K-ATPase activity in rats].

Single administration per os of the 0.066 M LiCl solution (3 ml per 100 g body weight) caused natriuresis. In the "lithium" rats with prolonged lithium treatment (i.p. injections during 10 days), polyuria developed; after water or 0.9% NaCl load excretion of Na, K, Ca, Mg and water increased as compared to the control rats. The saluretic effect was very obvious after 0.9% NaCl load in the "lithium" rats. The Na, K ATPase activity was measured by the quantitative cytochemical method, decreased only in the collecting ducts of the "lithium" rats. The natriuretic effect of acute lithium administra

Lithium administered to pregnant, lactating and neonatal rats: entry into developing brain.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the extent of drug entry into developing brain, when administered to pregnant and lactating women. Lithium is commonly prescribed for bipolar disorder. Here we studied transfer of lithium given to dams, into blood, brain and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in embryonic and postnatal animals as well as adults. METHODS: Lithium chloride in a clinically relevant dose (3.2 mg/kg body weight) was injected intraperitoneally into pregnant (E15-18) and lactating dams (birth-P16/17) or directly into postnatal pups (P0-P16/17). Acute treatment involved a single injection; lo

Lithium increases hippocampal SNARE protein abundance after traumatic brain injury.

Rodent models of traumatic brain injury (TBI) reproduce secondary injury sequela and cognitive impairments observed in patients afflicted by a TBI. Impaired neurotransmission has been reported in the weeks following experimental TBI, and may be a contributor to behavioral dysfunction. The soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor attachment protein receptor (SNARE) complex, the machinery facilitating vesicular docking and fusion, is a highly-conserved mechanism important for neurotransmission. Following TBI, there is a reduction in both the formation of the SNARE complex and the abundance of m

Effect of lithium-pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus on ultrasonic vocalizations in the infant rat pup.

Evidence shows that febrile convulsions induced in rat pups increase ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs); however, the effect of status epilepticus (SE) induced in developing rats on USVs has not been fully investigated. The goal of this study was to analyze USVs following lithium-pilocarpine-induced SE in fourteen-day-old (P14) rat pups. The rat pups were given 3-mEq/kg lithium chloride i.p. on the day before the induction of SE, which was carried out at P14 by subcutaneous injection of 100-mg/kg pilocarpine hydrochloride; control animals were given an equal volume of lithium chloride and saline

Lithium fails to enhance neurogenesis in subventricular zone and dentate subgranular zone after intracerebral hemorrhage in rats.

OBJECTIVE: Application of lithium induces neurogenesis in the damaged brain in the global cerebral ischemia rat model. In a previous study of rats subjected to intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), we have found that lithium treatment improves functional recovery and reduces acute brain swelling. In this follow-up study, we investigate whether the known beneficial effect of lithium on functional recovery after ICH can be explained by neurorestorative effect. METHODS: Intracerebral hemorrhage was induced using infusion of collagenase into the striatum in adult rats. Rats were treated by intraperiton

Enantioselective catalytic 1,2-boronate rearrangements.

A strategy that facilitates the construction of a wide variety of trisubstituted stereocenters through a catalytically accessed common chiral intermediate could prove highly enabling for the field of synthetic chemistry. We report the discovery of enantioselective, catalytic 1,2-boronate rearrangements for the synthesis of α-chloro pinacol boronic esters from readily available boronic esters and dichloromethane. The chiral building blocks produced in these reactions can undergo two sequential stereospecific elaborations to generate a wide assortment of trisubstituted stereocenters. The enantio

Salar del Hombre Muerto, source of lithium-tolerant bacteria.

The Salar del Hombre Muerto is a flat salt with great microbial activity despite the existing extreme conditions like high altitude, lack of water, low level of oxygen, high radiation and high concentration of sodium and lithium chloride. Despite these unfavorable conditions, we found microbial diversity with the presence of fungi, algae, and bacteria. From aqueous solutions and soil samples, a total of 238 bacteria were isolated and 186 of them were able to grow in the presence of salt. About 30% of the strains showed the ability to grow in solid medium proximally to a LiCl solution close to
