Anthelmintic resistance in livestock in Africa: review of the current status.

BACKGROUND: Livestock across the globe are frequently infected with multiple gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) species, and the use of anthelmintics remains a cornerstone of their control. However, anthelmintic resistance (AHR) poses a growing threat to sustainable livestock production, resulting in reduced productivity and compromised animal health and welfare. Reports of resistance in various helminth species against multiple anthelmintic classes exist in African livestock; however, studies summarising the extent and burden of this resistance are limited, and systematic monitoring or surveilla

Brucella as the main cause of abortion among livestock in Armenia.

INTRODUCTION: Abortion in livestock can have a significant impact on animal husbandry, as well as raise public health concerns when caused by zoonotic pathogens. Thus, the involvement of bacterial (e.g., Brucella spp. and Enterobacteriaceae) and fungal infections in livestock abortions in Armenia was explored. METHODOLOGY: From 2018 to 2022, 168 aborted foetal tissues from cattle and small ruminants in Armenia were tested for fungal and Enterobacteriaceae infections by culture. The API 20E biochemical test was performed on bacteria-positive samples. Culture-negative samples were further teste

Evidence of Zika virus circulation in human and livestock in Chad.

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a major public health problem worldwide. After several reported outbreaks, the current extent of infections caused by this orthoflavivirus in the Sahel remains to be explored. We investigated the prevalence of neutralizing antibodies against ZIKV in the general population, in HIV-infected individuals and in livestock in Chad using a seroneutralization assay that ensures high specificity level. In this retrospective serological serosurveillance investigation, we estimated the neutralizing seroprevalence to be approximately 26 % (18/69) in healthy Chadian participants and 17

A Meta-Analysis of the Prevalence of Toxoplasmosis in Livestock and Poultry Worldwide.

Toxoplasma gondii causes toxoplasmosis with a global prevalence in the world. A large proportion of human illness is most frequently associated with consuming raw and undercooked meat or other animal products containing infective parasitic stages of T. gondii. This systematic review and meta-analysis study evaluated the prevalence of toxoplasmosis in cattle, sheep, camels, goats, and poultry worldwide. The search was performed in databases including PubMed, WoS, Scopus, Science Direct, Google Scholar, and ISC from 2000 to 2019 in Persian and English. The main inclusion criteria were the preval

Understanding the role of wild ruminants in anthelmintic resistance in livestock.

Wild ruminants are susceptible to infection from generalist helminth species, which can also infect domestic ruminants. A better understanding is required of the conditions under which wild ruminants can act as a source of helminths (including anthelmintic-resistant genotypes) for domestic ruminants, and vice versa, with the added possibility that wildlife could act as refugia for drug-susceptible genotypes and hence buffer the spread and development of resistance. Helminth infections cause significant productivity losses in domestic ruminants and a growing resistance to all classes of anthelm

An Estimate of Global Anthrax Prevalence in Livestock: A Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Anthrax, caused by the soil-borne spore-forming bacteria called Bacillus anthracis, is a zoonotic disease that persists worldwide in livestock and wildlife and infects humans. It is a great hazard to livestock; henceforth, evaluating the global concerns about the disease occurrence in livestock is essential. This study was conducted to estimate the global prevalence of anthrax and predict high-risk regions, which could be an input to veterinarians to take necessary steps to control and avoid the disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A literature review was performed using online

The pattern of anthrax at the wildlife-livestock-human interface in Zimbabwe.

Anthrax is an important but neglected zoonosis in southern Africa and elsewhere which occurs naturally in herbivorous wildlife and livestock. Fatal outbreaks in animals are spaced by potentially extended periods of non-activity during which the bacterium is maintained in soil. The ecology of the pathogen in the multi-host system and the environment is still not fully understood. This study investigated the patterns of anthrax in Zimbabwe in order to better understand the occurrence of disease in susceptible wildlife and livestock and hence its control. The study used available data in governme

A study of ticks and tick-borne livestock pathogens in Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: As obligate blood-feeding arthropods, ticks transmit pathogens to humans and domestic animals more often than other arthropod vectors. Livestock farming plays a vital role in the rural economy of Pakistan, and tick infestation causes serious problems with it. However, research on tick species diversity and tick-borne pathogens has rarely been conducted in Pakistan. In this study, a systematic investigation of the tick species infesting livestock in different ecological regions of Pakistan was conducted to determine the microbiome and pathobiome diversity in the indigenous ticks. Assessment of Interventions to Improve Air Quality in a Livestock Building.

This study examined the effectiveness of engineering controls to reduce contaminant concentrations in a swine farrowing room during winter in the U.S. Midwest. Over two winters, changes in air quality were evaluated following installation of a 1700 m3 h-1 (1000 cfm) recirculating ventilation system to provide 5.4 air exchanges per hour. This system incorporated one of two readily available dust control systems, one based on filtration and the other on cyclonic treatment. A second treatment evaluated reductions in carbon dioxide (CO2) associated with replacement of standard, unvented gas-fired

Current insights into the molecular genetic basis of dwarfism in livestock.

Impairment of bone growth at a young age leads to dwarfism in adulthood. Dwarfism can be categorised as either proportionate, an overall size reduction without changes in body proportions, or disproportionate, a size reduction in one or more limbs, with changes in body proportions. Many forms of dwarfism are inherited and result from structural disruptions or disrupted signalling pathways. Hormonal disruptions are evident in Brooksville miniature Brahman cattle and Z-linked dwarfism in chickens, caused by mutations in GH1 and GHR. Furthermore, mutations in IHH are the underlying cause of creep

Quantifying the burden of vampire bat rabies in Peruvian livestock.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of infectious disease burden is necessary to appropriately allocate resources for prevention and control. In Latin America, rabies is among the most important zoonoses for human health and agriculture, but the burden of disease attributed to its main reservoir, the common vampire bat (Desmodus rotundus), remains uncertain. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We used questionnaires to quantify under-reporting of livestock deaths across 40 agricultural communities with differing access to health resources and epidemiological histories of vampire bat rabies (VBR) in the regions

Effects of climate change on the occurrence and distribution of livestock diseases.

The planet's mean air and ocean temperatures have been rising over the last century because of increasing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. These changes have substantial effects on the epidemiology of infectious diseases. We describe direct and indirect processes linking climate change and infectious diseases in livestock with reference to specific case studies. Some of the studies are used to show a positive association between temperature and expansion of the geographical ranges of arthropod vectors (e.g. Culicoides imicola, which transmits bluetongue virus) while others are used to illustrat

Activities and Effects of Ergot Alkaloids on Livestock Physiology and Production.

Consumption of feedstuffs contaminated with ergot alkaloids has a broad impact on many different physiological mechanisms that alters the homeostasis of livestock. This change in homeostasis causes an increased sensitivity in livestock to perturbations in the ambient environment, resulting in an increased sensitivity to such stressors. This ultimately results in large financial losses in the form of production losses to livestock producers around the world. This review will focus on the underlying physiological mechanisms that are affected by ergot alkaloids that lead to decreases in livestock

Prevalence and diversity of cystic echinococcosis in livestock in Maasailand, Kenya.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonotic disease caused by several members of the Echinococcus granulosus species complex. In East Africa, several species/strains are known to occur in livestock and humans, but host preferences, relative frequencies and spatial distribution of these taxa are poorly known. Here, we contribute livestock data for Maasailand of southern Kenya. Total CE prevalence was 25.8 % in cattle (151/587), 16.5 % in sheep (71/430) and 10.8 % in goats (21/194), which is a significant increase compared to surveys done about three decades ago. The majority of cysts occurred in t

Monitoring of antibiotic consumption in livestock: a German feasibility study.

Every application of antibacterial drugs in veterinary medicine may encourage selection for resistant bacteria. In Germany no valid data are available which would be suitable for a species specific estimation of drug consumption especially regarding food producing animals. Therefore, a representative monitoring of consumption of antibacterial drugs in food producing animals should be implemented. As a first step, a feasibility project was conducted to identify the technical preconditions and develop a concept for a regular monitoring system within Germany as a country with a non-central federa
