Connections between stereocilia in auditory hair cells of the alligator lizard.

The interconnections between stereocilia within individual tufts of auditory hair cells in the basilar papilla of the alligator lizard were examined with a transmission electron microscope. An elaborate array of fibers near the base of each stereocilium (where it tapers to anchor into the cuticular plate) connected it to each of its neighboring stereocilia. The tips of individual stereocilia, which were slightly larger in diameter than their shaft, contacted adjacent stereocilia. Fibers also connected the tip of the kinocilium to neighboring stereocilia in the first row. The remaining regions

Adrenergic inhibition of uterine contractions and oviposition in the lizard Anolis carolinensis.

Injection of arginine vasotocin (AVT), which induces oviposition in several lizard species, fails to do so in Anolis carolinensis. We tested the hypothesis that epinephrine-induced activation of beta-adrenoreceptors in the uterus inhibits AVT action on uterine smooth muscle. Pretreatment of gravid females with the beta-adrenoreceptor antagonist dichloroisoproterenol 15 min before an AVT injection resulted in uterine sensitivity to AVT and subsequent oviposition. Furthermore, in vitro tests indicated that epinephrine as well as a beta-adrenoreceptor agonist (isoproterenol) inhibit uterine tonic

Effects of trypan blue on the development of the garden lizard, Calotes versicolor.

The eggs of Calotes versicolor were exposed to different concentrations of trypan blue around the time of appearance of limb buds. The treatment resulted in malformations of limbs, hemorrhages in various locations, microphthalmia, kinky tail, and retarded development and growth of the contained embryos. The proportion of affected embryos varied significantly from clutch to clutch, perhaps due to genetic variation. All treated embryos, including those apparently unaffected, had trypan blue in the blood circulation, but not in the amniotic cavity or extraembryonic celom. Trypan blue was seen in

A Field Study of the Lava Lizard (Tropidurus Albemarlensis) in the Galapagos Islands.

The effect of removal of the parietal eye (parietalectomy) was studied in free-living lava lizards at the Charles Darwin Research Station in the Galapagos Islands, and the results were compared with those obtained with parietalectomized temperate zone iguanids. Behavior, activity, body temperature, and Iodine-131 uptake by the thyroid gland were studied from Jan. 23 to Feb. 27, 1964. Parietalectomy had no detectable effect on any of the parameters investigated. Home ranges of adult male and female lizards were measured, and defensive and antagonistic behavior was noted. The home ranbges of mal

Placental buffering of maternal steroid hormone effects on fetal and yolk hormone levels: a comparative study of a viviparous lizard, Sceloporus jarrovi, and an oviparous lizard, Sceloporus graciosus.

We investigated maternal-fetal hormone transfer in the mountain spiny lizard, Sceloporus jarrovi, a viviparous species with a simple chorioallantoic placenta. In one experiment, we examined the effect of elevated maternal progesterone on fetal and yolk hormone levels. Progesterone implants increased maternal progesterone nearly 100-fold; however, the resulting increase in fetal and yolk progesterone was only about 2% of that seen in mothers, providing evidence that the placenta buffers hormone diffusion. In addition, some effects of progesterone treatment differed between male and female fetus

Molecular detection of Toxoplasma gondii in Amblyomma gervaisi ticks infesting monitor lizards (Varanus bengalensis).

Reptiles often inhabit environments that are in close proximity to humans and livestock, creating opportunities for parasite transmission. They are common in areas where they find shelter, food and warmth. The Bengal monitor lizard (Varanus bengalensis), a member of the family Varanidae, represents one of the largest groups of extant poikilothermic predators. Monitor lizards are known to harbor several tick species that serve as vectors for a variety of pathogens. No prior information is available in the literature regarding ticks infesting V. bengalensis in Pakistan as well as regarding the o

A mobile hybrid deep learning approach for classifying 3D-like representations of Amazonian lizards.

Image classification is a highly significant field in machine learning (ML), especially when applied to address longstanding and challenging issues in the biological sciences, such as specie recognition and biodiversity conservation. In this study, we present the development of a hybrid machine learning-based tool suitable for deployment on mobile devices. This tool is aimed at processing and classifying three-dimensional samples of endemic lizard species from the Amazon rainforest. The dataset used in our experiment was collected at the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi (MPEG), Belém-PA, Brazil, a

Do sexual differences in life strategies make male lizards more susceptible to parasite infection?

Female and male hosts may maximise their fitness by evolving different strategies to compensate for the costs of parasite infections. The resulting sexual dimorphism might be apparent in differential relationships between parasite load and body condition, potentially reflecting differences in energy allocation to anti-parasitic defences. For example, male lacertids with high body condition may produce many offspring while being intensely parasitised. In contrast, female lacertids may show a different outcome of the trade-offs between body condition and immunity, aiming to better protect themse

ALTERNATIVE ROUTE OF TRANSMISSION AND HOST SPECIFICITY OF CYRTOSOMUM PENNERI IN FLORIDA'S INVASIVE LIZARDS.

The atractid nematode Cyrtosomum penneri is an autoinfective parasite of several lizard species. Intraspecific transmission between hosts appears to occur exclusively through sexual copulation, yet it is unclear how worms are transferred between different host species. Our research aims to test the possibility of oral transmission of C. penneri using experimental infections. The lizards Anolis sagrei, Leiocephalus carinatus, Hemidactylus mabouia, and Agama picticauda were experimentally exposed to C. penneri in 1 of these groups: (1) oral infection using a feces and saline slurry to approximat

Higher locomotor costs of pregnancy in viviparous compared to oviparous common lizards (Zootoca vivipara).

Pregnancy is a physiological cost of reproduction for animals that rely on fleeing to avoid predators. Costs of reproduction are predicted to differ between alternative reproductive strategies or modes, such as egg-laying (oviparity) or live-bearing (viviparity). However, disentangling the factors that comprise this cost and how it differs for oviparous or viviparous females is challenging due to myriad environmental, biological, and evolutionary confounds. Here, we tested the hypothesis that costs of pregnancy differ between oviparous and viviparous common lizards (Zootoca vivipara). We predi

What constrains adaptive radiation? Documentation and explanation of under-evolved morphologies in Anolis lizards.

Adaptive radiations fill ecological and morphological space during evolutionary diversification. Why do some trait combinations evolve during such radiations, whereas others do not? 'Required' constraints of pleiotropy and developmental interaction frequently are implicated in explanations for such patterns, but selective forces also may discourage particular trait combinations. Here, we use a dataset of 351 species to demonstrate the dearth of some theoretically plausible trait combinations of limb, toe and tail length in Anolis lizards. For example, disproportionately few Anolis species disp

Evolution of fossorial locomotion in the transition from tetrapod to snake-like in lizards.

Dramatic evolutionary transitions in morphology are often assumed to be adaptive in a new habitat. However, these assumptions are rarely tested because such tests require intermediate forms, which are often extinct. In vertebrates, the evolution of an elongate, limbless body is generally hypothesized to facilitate locomotion in fossorial and/or cluttered habitats. However, these hypotheses remain untested because few studies examine the locomotion of species ranging in body form from tetrapod to snake-like. Here, we address these functional hypotheses by testing whether trade-offs exist betwee

Detection and molecular characterization of Cryptosporidium species in wild-caught pet spiny-tailed lizards.

Uromastyx is a genus of the herbivorous agamid lizards, also known as spiny-tailed lizards or mastigures, which are found in parts of Africa and the Middle East. Currently, several species of this genus are available in the international pet trade in Japan. In this study, two imported wild-caught spiny-tailed lizards (Arabian blue mastigure, Uromastyx ornata philbyi, and Sudan mastigure, Uromastyx dispar flavifasciata) were diagnosed with a Cryptosporidium (Apicomplexa: Cryptosporidiidae) infection based on the presence of the oocysts in the rectal feces using sucrose flotation and light micro

Photic resetting of the circadian clock is correlated with photic habitat in Anolis lizards.

Circadian rhythms are regulated by an internal clock, which is itself synchronized to environmental cues such as light and temperature. It is widely assumed that the circadian system is adapted to local cues, which vary enormously across habitats, yet the comparative data necessary for testing this idea are lacking. We examined photic and thermal resetting of the circadian clock in five species of Anolis lizards whose microhabitats differ in the amounts of sun and shade. The primary circadian oscillator in Anolis is the pineal gland, which produces the hormone melatonin. A flow-through culture

Prevalence and molecular identification of Cryptosporidium isolates from pet lizards and snakes in Italy.

In order to acquire prevalence and genetic data on Cryptosporidium infections in captive lizards and snakes kept as pets, a survey was conducted on 150 individual reptiles from southern Italy. Fecal samples were preserved in 5% formalin and analyzed using a commercial immunofluorescence assay (IFA) for the detection of Cryptosporidium oocysts and Giardia cysts. IFA revealed the presence of Cryptosporidium oocysts in nine of the 150 samples examined (6.0%), precisely in 6/125 snakes (4.8%) and in 3/25 lizards (12.0%); all fecal samples tested negative for the presence of Giardia cysts. Jaw and hyolingual movements during prey transport in varanid lizards: effects of prey type.

The ability to modulate feeding kinematics in response to prey items with different functional properties is likely a prerequisite for most organisms that feed on a variety of food items. Variation in prey properties is expected to reveal variation in feeding function and the functional role of the different phases in a transport cycle. Here we describe the kinematics of prey transport of two varanid species, Varanus niloticus and Varanus ornatus. These species were selected for analysis because of their highly specialised hyolingual system and food transport mechanism (inertial food transport

Parasitism of lizards by immature stages of the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis (Acari, Ixodidae).

From 1982-1985 and 1993-1999, a total of 309 individual reptiles, mostly lizards and snakes, belonging to 12 species (American alligator, six lizard species, five snake species) was captured on St. Catherine's Island, Liberty County, Georgia, USA, and examined for ticks. Three lizard species, the broad-headed skink Eumeces laticeps, southeastern 5-lined skink Eumeces inexpectatus, and eastern glass lizard Ophisaurus ventralis, were severely infested with larvae and nymphs of the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis. Ticks were not found on any of the other reptile species. Overall, 80% of 65 E.

How Foraging Mode Sculpts Sensory Systems: Morphological Evidence From DiceCT and Histology in Sympatric Lizards.

The relationship between foraging modes and sensory system morphology is critical for understanding the ecological and evolutionary adaptations of lizards. This study investigates the nasal olfactory system (NOS) and vomeronasal system (VNS) of four sympatric lizards from the Turpan Basin, China, which exhibit distinct foraging strategies: the active foraging Eremias roborowskii (Lacertidae), the sit-and-wait foraging Phrynocephalus axillaris (Agamidae) and Tenuidactylus dadunensis (Gekkonidae), and the seasonally frugivorous Teratoscincus roborowskii (Sphaerodactylidae), which adopts active f
