Transnational alcohol corporations in Nigeria as commercial determinants of health: Implications for policy.

Research on commercial determinants of health (CDoH) has burgeoned in the Global North. However, despite the heavy presence of harmful commodity industries in Africa, little scholarly attention has been paid to CDoH. Transnational alcohol corporations (TNACs) in Nigeria deploy well-articulated marketing strategies and practices that negatively impact health in their quest for profit maximisation, wealth extraction and influence. Nevertheless, their tactics and practices are largely unregulated and understudied. This commentary demonstrates how TNACs in Nigeria are a key pervasive and harmful C

Medication for opioid use disorder in the Arab World: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a global public health concern. The standard of care for OUD involves treatment using medications such as buprenorphine, methadone, or naltrexone. No known review exists to assess the contextual factors associated with medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) in the Arab World. This systematic review serves as an implementation science study to address this research gap and improve the uptake of MOUD in the Arab World. METHODS: Systematic searches of Medline, PsycINFO, and EMBASE, and a citation analysis, were used to identify peer-reviewed articles w

A computerized kiosk to teach injury prevention: is it as effective as human interaction?

BACKGROUND: An emergency department (ED) visit may be an effective place to screen and educate families about injury prevention. The purpose of this study was to determine if a computerized kiosk in a pediatric ED can screen families for injury risk and encourage them to make more safety changes at follow-up survey compared with an injury prevention specialist (IPS). METHODS: A prospective, randomized controlled study was performed with families of children younger than 14 years in an ED lobby. Families were screened for injury risk by computerized kiosk based on child's age category at triag

Towards unified global action on ultra-processed foods: understanding commercial determinants, countering corporate power, and mobilising a public health response.

The rise of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) in human diets is harming global public health. However, policy responses are still emerging-much like tobacco control efforts decades ago-indicating the need to understand root causes and accelerate global action. This paper, the third in a three-part Lancet Series, takes several steps to advance knowledge of these causes, and to inform a global public health response. First, we show that the UPF industry is a key driver of the problem, as its leading corporations and co-dependent actors have expanded and restructured food systems almost everywhere, in

Assessing the health impacts of transnational corporations: a case study of Carlton and United Breweries in Australia.

BACKGROUND: The practices of transnational corporations (TNCs) affect population health through unhealthy products, shaping social determinants of health, or influencing the regulatory structures governing their activities. There has been limited research on community exposures to TNC policies and practices. The aim of this paper was to adapt existing Health Impact Assessment methods that were previously used for both a fast food and an extractives industry corporation in order to assess Carlton and United Breweries (CUB) operations within Australia. CUB is an Australian alcohol company owned

The World Health Organization - Community Empowerment Model in Addressing Food Insecurity in Low-Income African-American Women: A Review of the Literature.

Numerous researchers have examined the serious consequences of food insecurity and food deserts affecting the nutritional health of poor or low-income African-American women and their families. Food insecurity is defined as having limited or uncertain capacityfor acquiring sufficient, safe, and nutritious food at all times to meet one's dietary needs, while food deserts refer to economically and socially-deprived inner city areas with inadequate food supply that are often inhabited by low-income groups. Researchers have found that despite the capacity of community-level resources such as SNAP

Feline Farmhands: The Value of Working Cats to Australian Dairy Farmers-A Case for Tax Deductibility.

Rodents play a role in the spread of disease and cause immense damage to produce and infrastructure, leading to food safety risks and economic losses for farmers. Farmers typically control rodent populations using rodenticide baits, which are expensive, and, when used incorrectly, are inefficient, and pose a risk to children, pets and wildlife. Cats may offer a safer, more efficient and cheaper option for farmers, but concerns for cats' impact on wildlife and possible negative outcomes for their own welfare may lead to them being underutilized. Through semi-structured interviews with 15 people

Reasons for performing a caesarean section in public hospitals in rural Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: It is estimated that 18.5 million Caesarean Sections (CS) are conducted annually worldwide and about one-third of them are done without medical indications and described as "unnecessary". Although developed countries account for most of the rise in the trend of unnecessary CS, more studies report a similar trend in developing countries, putting a strain on existing but limited healthcare resources, jeopardizing families' financial security and presenting a barrier to equitable universal coverage. We examined indications for CS in public hospitals of one district in Bangladesh and e

Survey of ENT services in Africa: need for a comprehensive intervention.

BACKGROUND: Burden of disease (BOD) is greatest in resource-starved regions such as Africa. Even though hearing disability ranks third on the list of non-fatal disabling conditions in low- and middle-income countries, ear, nose, and throat (ENT) disorders are not specifically coded for within the framework governing global BOD estimates, and in discussions about health challenges, non-communicable diseases receive scant attention. Implementing cost-effective interventions to address conditions largely neglected by global estimates of BOD such as hearing loss are important contributors to healt

Wrongful death claims. Harriton v Stephens. [2002] NSWSC 461. Edwards v Blomeley. [2002] NSWSC 460. Waller v James [2002] NSWSC 462.

Studdert J in all three cases went to great length to summarise the global judicial position of "wrongful life" claims. He did not, however, examine in great length how or whether "wrongful life" claims or "wrongful birth" claims are reconcilable with tort and common law principles. Although the cases identify the difficulty in assessing and quantifying damages, they do not directly address the strict legal principles which apply in the assessment of damages. The main conclusion of the three judgments was that no duty of care is owed to the plaintiff in these circumstances and, even if a duty

Facilitators and barriers of implementing sin-tax policies: a scoping review.

Sin taxes, or public health taxes, are excise taxes levied on goods that can harm health. These taxes aim to influence consumer behavior, enhance health outcomes, and generate revenue for health systems. While the effectiveness of sin taxes in influencing consumer behavior has been widely studied, there is limited synthesis of the barriers and facilitators to their implementation. This study specifically reviews these barriers and facilitators, providing insights into the successful sin-tax policy implementation. This study specifically reviews the barriers and facilitators to the implementati

Development of a framework for action to advocate for a coherent prevention policy for tobacco, alcohol, and foods high in fats, salt, or sugar: a mixed-methods approach.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco, alcohol, and foods high in fats, salt, or sugar (HFSS) are health harming products. Limited progress in prevention is partly due to health-harming industry lobbying. Action on Smoking and Health (ASH), Alcohol Health Alliance, and Obesity Health Alliance collaborated with the aim of developing a framework for action to address the saturation of these products in our environment. METHODS: We used a mixed-methods approach. Focus groups with academic experts, local government, and national government, recruited through snowball sampling were held in Nov 3, 2022 (14 participa

Gathering momentum for the way ahead: fifth report of the Lancet Standing Commission on Liver Disease in the UK.

This report presents further evidence on the escalating alcohol consumption in the UK and the burden of liver disease associated with this major risk factor, as well as the effects on hospital and primary care. We reiterate the need for fiscal regulation by the UK Government if overall alcohol consumption is to be reduced sufficiently to improve health outcomes. We also draw attention to the effects of drastic cuts in public services for alcohol treatment, the repeated failures of voluntary agreements with the drinks industry, and the influence of the industry through its lobbying activities.

Hookworm-related anaemia among pregnant women: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Hookworm infection is among the major causes of anaemia in poor communities, but its importance in causing maternal anaemia is poorly understood, and this has hampered effective lobbying for the inclusion of anthelmintic treatment in maternal health packages. We sought to review existing evidence on the role of hookworm as a risk factor for anaemia among pregnant women. We also estimate the number of hookworm infections in pregnant women in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). METHODS: Structured searches using MEDLINE and EMBASE as well as manual searches of reference lists w

Impact of Provincial Pharmacare Coverage for Direct Oral Anticoagulants on Long-Term Anticoagulation for Unprovoked Venous Thromboembolism.

BACKGROUND: Unprovoked venous thromboembolism (VTE) has a high risk of recurrence, typically warranting indefinite anticoagulation. Direct-acting oral anticoagulants (DOACs) have several advantages over warfarin and are thus recommended preferentially for long-term use. Until January 2024 in Nova Scotia, DOAC use beyond 6 months was often cost-prohibitive due to limited provincial funding. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of drug coverage on duration of anticoagulation for unprovoked VTE in Nova Scotia. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was completed for patients with unprovoked VTE see

An audit of ECT in England 2011-2015: Usage, demographics, and adherence to guidelines and legislation.

OBJECTIVES: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) continues to be used in England, but without comprehensive national auditing. Therefore, information was gathered on usage, demographics, consent, and adherence to the guidelines of the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (N.I.C.E.) and to the Mental Health Act. DESIGN AND METHODS: Freedom of Information Act requests were sent to 56 National Health Service Trusts. RESULTS: Thirty-two trusts provided some usable data. Only 10 were able to report how many people received psychological therapy prior to ECT in accordance with N.I.C.E. recommendat

MDMA ('ecstasy') and other 'club drugs'. The new epidemic.

Unfortunately, perceptions that the club drugs can be safe endure. Some groups, such as the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Study, continue to lobby for the legalization of MDMA for research purposes [76]. DanceSafe is an organization that seeks to educate the "nonaddicted" user to decrease the risks [82]. The DanceSafe Web site offers tips on the safe use of MDMA, such as attention to hydration status and ambient temperature. It also offers free testing of tablets submitted by mail and sells home testing kits to determine the content of pills sold as "ecstasy." Although much rem

In search of common ground: Louisiana's resistance to an extreme risk protection order law for domestic violence prevention.

BACKGROUND: Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) laws allow civil courts to authorize orders to temporarily prevent a person from purchasing or possessing firearms upon finding that they pose a significant risk of harm to themselves or others. In Louisiana, a state with one of the highest rates of firearm homicide of women in the nation, multiple attempts to pass ERPO legislation have failed despite evidence of their effectiveness. We sought to identify places of common ground on the matter of domestic violence against women in Louisiana and to understand how perspectives on politics and polic

Will my patients get their residence permit? A critical analysis of the ethical dilemmas involved in writing medical certificates for residence permits in France.

BACKGROUND: France has long been a country of immigration and in some respects may be seen to have a generous policy with respect to asylum seekers and access to health care for migrants. The French state notably provides healthcare access for undocumented migrants, through state medical aid and since 1998 has had a humanitarian policy for granting temporary residence permits for medical reason (TRPMR) to migrants. Within a context of political debate, reform and tightening immigration control we will examine this latter policy focusing especially on the dilemmas that arise for physicians of m
