From brain topography to brain topology: relevance of graph theory to functional neuroscience.

Although several brain regions show significant specialization, higher functions such as cross-modal information integration, abstract reasoning and conscious awareness are viewed as emerging from interactions across distributed functional networks. Analytical approaches capable of capturing the properties of such networks can therefore enhance our ability to make inferences from functional MRI, electroencephalography and magnetoencephalography data. Graph theory is a branch of mathematics that focuses on the formal modelling of networks and offers a wide range of theoretical tools to quantify

Cross-Sectional Investigation of Brain Volume in Dyslexia.

The goal of the study was to determine whether dyslexia is associated with differences in local brain volume, and whether these local brain volume differences show cross-sectional age-effects. We investigated the local volume of gray and white brain matter with voxel-based morphometry (VBM) as well as reading performance in three age groups of dyslexic and neurotypical normal reading subjects (children, teenagers and adults). Performance data demonstrate a steady improvement of reading skills in both neurotypical as well as dyslexic readers. However, the pattern of gray matter volumes tell a d

Here Comes the SSuN: Early Experiences with the STD Surveillance Network.

In 2005, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention established the STD Surveillance Network (SSuN), a sentinel surveillance system comprising local, enhanced sexually transmitted disease (STD) surveillance systems that follow common protocols. The purpose of SSuN is to improve the capacity of national, state, and local STD programs to detect, monitor, and respond rapidly to trends in STDs through enhanced collection, reporting, analysis, visualization, and interpretation of clinical, behavioral, and geographic information obtained from a geographically diverse sample of individuals diagno

Drift in centrality of different brain regions in an anatomical neural network with Parkinson's disease: A view from complex network analysis.

Understanding the role of brain regions in anatomical neural networks with Parkinson's disease (PD) is essential for improving the clinical protocol or finding new targets for deep brain stimulation (DBS). Although numerous changes have been reported in local functional studies, few studies have reported on the anatomical network of the entire brain. Here, by developing a series of algorithms, this study provided a whole anatomical neural network of the macaque monkey. Then, the drifts in centrality from normal to PD networks were described in terms of complex network analysis and summarized w

Early stages of tau pathology and its associations with functional connectivity, atrophy and memory.

In Alzheimer's disease, post-mortem studies have shown that the first cortical site where neurofibrillary tangles appear is the transentorhinal region, a subregion within the medial temporal lobe that largely overlaps with Brodmann area 35, and the entorhinal cortex. Here we used tau-PET imaging to investigate the sequence of tau pathology progression within the human medial temporal lobe and across regions in the posterior-medial system. Our objective was to study how medial temporal tau is related to functional connectivity, regional atrophy, and memory performance. We included 215 amyloid-β

Resting-state fMRI reveals cerebellar-temporal lobe network remodeling in hyperlipidemia: A graph theoretical analysis.

Hyperlipidemia (HLP) is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and has a significant impact on the nervous system, potentially leading to cognitive decline. This study uses resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to analyze the brain network characteristics of HLP patients and explore their relationship with cognitive performance. This study collected fMRI data from 50 patients with HLP and 54 healthy controls. Graph theory analysis was employed to examine differences in brain functional networks between the two groups. Compared with the healthy control group, the HL

Early diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease: Graph theoretical analysis of cerebellar network features based on 18F-AV45 PET.

Pathological and neuroimaging changes in the cerebellum of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients have been well documented. However, the changes in cerebellar amyloid plaque deposition connectivity networks during AD progression based on positron emission tomography (PET) imaging remain unclear. We selected 18F-florbetapir PET (18F-AV45 PET) imaging data from the Alzheimer's disease neuroimaging initiative (ADNI) dataset (n = 612) and employed graph theoretical analysis to examine amyloid plaque deposition connectivity, comparing the connectivity differences across cognitively normal (CN), early m

Variations in the use of cardiac procedures in the Veterans Health Administration.

BACKGROUND: Considerable variability exists in the use of cardiac procedures for patients with heart disease. One cause for this variability is the availability of local facilities to perform these procedures. This study was initiated to identify health system features that are related to rates of catheterization, percutaneous coronary angioplasty, and coronary artery bypass graft surgery in the Veterans Affairs health care system in which structured referral systems are intended to compensate for variation in local resource availability. METHODS: Medical records of 30,901 patients admitted t

Belief of agency changes dynamics in sensorimotor networks.

Controlling an event through one's own action usually induces a sense of agency, a feeling that arises when an expected outcome matches the intention. The neural correlates of this feeling remain controversial however, as experimental manipulation of the action-outcome chain often introduces mismatch or prediction errors that strongly correlate with the sense of agency. Here, we took a different approach and manipulated the causal belief (self-attribution vs. computer-attribution) by external cues during matched visuo-motor tapping conditions. With magneto-encephalography, we studied the sense

Neuronal Network Oscillations in Neurodegenerative Diseases.

Cognitive and behavioral acts go along with highly coordinated spatiotemporal activity patterns in neuronal networks. Most of these patterns are synchronized by coherent membrane potential oscillations within and between local networks. By entraining multiple neurons into a common time regime, such network oscillations form a critical interface between cellular activity and large-scale systemic functions. Synaptic integrity is altered in neurodegenerative diseases, and it is likely that this goes along with characteristic changes of coordinated network activity. This notion is supported by EEG

Looking beyond the face area: lesion network mapping of prosopagnosia.

Damage to the right fusiform face area can disrupt the ability to recognize faces, a classic example of how damage to a specialized brain region can disrupt a specialized brain function. However, similar symptoms can arise from damage to other brain regions, and face recognition is now thought to depend on a distributed brain network. The extent of this network and which regions are critical for facial recognition remains unclear. Here, we derive this network empirically based on lesion locations causing clinically significant impairments in facial recognition. Cases of acquired prosopagnosia

Differences in network controllability and regional gene expression underlie hallucinations in Parkinson's disease.

Visual hallucinations are common in Parkinson's disease and are associated with poorer prognosis. Imaging studies show white matter loss and functional connectivity changes with Parkinson's visual hallucinations, but the biological factors underlying selective vulnerability of affected parts of the brain network are unknown. Recent models for Parkinson's disease hallucinations suggest they arise due to a shift in the relative effects of different networks. Understanding how structural connectivity affects the interplay between networks will provide important mechanistic insights. To address th

Altered network efficiency in isolated REM sleep behavior disorder: A multicentric study.

INTRODUCTION: Isolated rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (iRBD), characterized by abnormal movements during REM sleep, is a prodromal stage of dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and Parkinson's disease (PD). While iRBD shows emerging brain changes, their impact on structural connectivity and network efficiency, and their predictive value, remain poorly characterized. METHODS: In this international prospective study, 198 polysomnography-confirmed iRBD patients and 174 controls underwent diffusion magnetic resonance imaging and were analyzed. Topological Alterations of the Structural Brain Connectivity Network in Children with Juvenile Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: We used diffusion MR imaging to investigate the structural brain connectivity networks in juvenile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis, a neurodegenerative lysosomal storage disease of childhood. Although changes in conventional MR imaging are typically not visually apparent in children aged <10 years, we previously found significant microstructural abnormalities by using diffusion MR imaging. Therefore, we hypothesized that the structural connectivity networks would also be affected in the disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We acquired diffusion MR imaging data from 14 childr

Low functional robustness in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVES: Brain functional topology was investigated in patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (mTLE) by means of graph theory measures in two differentially defined graphs. Measures of segregation, integration, and centrality were compared between subjects with mTLE and healthy controls (HC). METHODS: Eleven subjects with mTLE (age 36.5±10.9years) and 15 age-matched HC (age 36.8±14.0years) participated in this study. Both anatomically and functionally defined adjacency matrices were used to investigate the measures. Binary undirected graphs were constructed to study network segregatio

Respiratory rhythms generated in the lamprey rhombencephalon.

Brainstem networks generating the respiratory rhythm in lampreys are still not fully characterized. In this study, we described the patterns of respiratory activities and we identified the general location of underlying neural networks. In a semi-intact preparation including the brain and gills, rhythmic discharges were recorded bilaterally with surface electrodes placed over the vagal motoneurons. The main respiratory output driving rhythmic gill movements consisted of short bursts (40.9+/-15.6 ms) of discharge occurring at a frequency of 1.0+/-0.3 Hz. This fast pattern was interrupted by lon

Local functional connectivity alterations in schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Local functional connectivity (FC) indicates local or short-distance functional interactions and may serve as a neuroimaging marker to investigate the human brain connectome. Local FC alterations suggest a disrupted balance in the local functionality of the whole brain network and are increasingly implicated in schizophrenia (SZ), bipolar disorder (BD), and major depressive disorder (MDD). METHODS: We aim to examine the similarities and differences in the local FC across SZ, BD, and MDD. In total, 537 participants (SZ, 126; BD, 97; MDD, 126; and healthy controls, 188) completed re

The neural correlates of conscious vision.

Conflicting accounts of the neurobiology of consciousness have emerged from previous imaging studies. Some studies suggest that visual consciousness relates to a distributed network of frontal and partietal regions while others point to localized activity within individual visual areas. While the two positions seem mutually exclusive, timing issues may help reconcile the two. Networks that appear unified in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies may reflect processes that are widely distributed in time. To help resolve this issue, we have investigated timing across a network corr

Non-linear failure patterns in urban road networks exposed to flooding.

Urban road networks are highly sensitive to flooding, yet the systemic consequences of inundation on their structural and functional organization remain insufficiently understood. This study introduces a scale-independent analytical framework that integrates complex network measures such as degree, closeness, and betweenness centrality with community-structure analysis to quantify how flooding transforms network connectivity, accessibility, and mesoscale cohesion. This study assesses the impact of river flooding on the urban road network under two scenarios: a 100-year return period flood and

The Role of the Autonomic Nervous System in Epilepsy and Migraine: A Narrative Review.

Autonomic symptoms may be local and general clinical manifestations of both epilepsy and migraine caused by the dysfunction of brain areas best known as the central autonomic network. Despite their prevalence, autonomic signs are often misdiagnosed and their treatment is undervalued. This review aims to describe the autonomic manifestations reported during seizures and migraineur attacks according to their presentation, focusing on the role of the central autonomic network (CAN) and on the parasympathetic outflow that often-induced cranial autonomic symptoms (CAS) during migraineur attacks.
