OBJECTIVES: To investigate awareness and use of long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) in the Norwegian primary care sector.
METHODS: We surveyed 359 women aged 16 to 23 years visiting a free sexual health clinic and 140 general practitioners (GPs) in Oslo, Norway, to assess contraceptive usage patterns, knowledge, opinions, and counselling content.
RESULTS: Eighty-two percent (n = 295) of the female respondents were current contraceptive users and of this group, 12% (n = 34) were LARC users. Combined oral contraceptives (COCs, 56%) and condoms (20%) were the methods most commonly use

BACKGROUND: Women use modern contraceptive methods, mainly either to limit or space pregnancy and both are not identical in their choices. One method may not best fit an individual's need irrespective of the time of spacing. Cognizant of this, the context with which women base in choice of contraceptives, their lived experiences in using, and factors for early removal/ discontinuation of long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) are not much investigated in the study setting and our study aimed to bridge the gap through exploring the underlying reasons.
METHOD: A phenomenological study de

BACKGROUND: Increased uptake of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) postpartum could prevent more unintended pregnancies and short inter-birth intervals. General practitioners (GPs) play a pivotal role in providing postpartum contraception at the 6-week postnatal visit.
AIM: To explore how GPs view their role in delivering postpartum contraception at the 6-week visit and on providing LARC at this time.
METHODS: In-depth, semi-structured interviews with a purposive sample of 13 GPs in Edinburgh and the surrounding region in Scotland. The interviews were audio recorded, transcribed and

INTRODUCTION: Although primary care practitioners are the main providers of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) and early medical abortion (EMA) in Australia, few provide these services. A professional community of practice (CoP) has the potential to improve LARC and EMA provision through evidence-based guidance, expert support and peer-to-peer engagement. The primary objective is to establish, implement and evaluate an innovative, multidisciplinary online CoP (AusCAPPS Network) to increase LARC and EMA services in Australian primary care. Secondary objectives are to (1) increase the nu

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to understand perceptions of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) among incarcerated women. We compared survey responses specific to IUDs and implants between a convenience sample of incarcerated women to a sample of women attending a local ob/gyn clinic.
STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a cross-sectional survey among two groups: (1) incarcerated women receiving medical care at the state correctional facility, and (2) women receiving care at an ob/gyn clinic in the same community. The anonymous survey included questions about demographic variables,

OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether women with Medicaid are less likely to receive long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) in a clinic requiring two visits for insertion.
STUDY DESIGN: LARC insertion and pregnancy rates were compared among women with Medicaid vs. private insurance, along with other predictors, in a retrospective chart review (N=447).
RESULTS: Univariately, fewer women with Medicaid vs. private insurance received LARC (66% vs. 79%, p<.01) and more become pregnant (18% vs. 6%, p<.001). Significant multivariate predictors of not receiving LARC were being unmarried and po

BACKGROUND: The impact of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) on female sexual function remains a controversial and often overlooked issue. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of three common LARC methods on female sexual function.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 90 women, divided into three groups based on their chosen contraceptive: copper-containing intrauterine device (Cu-IUD, n = 30), levonorgestrel intrauterine system (LNG-IUS, n = 30), and the etonogestrel subcutaneous implant (Implanon, n = 30). Changes in sexual frequency and partner sexual satisfaction

BACKGROUND: Postpartum use of long-acting reversible contraception has been found to be effective at increasing interpregnancy intervals, reducing unintended pregnancies, and optimizing health outcomes for mothers and babies. Among female active-duty military service members, reproductive planning may be particularly important, yet little is known about postpartum long-acting reversible contraceptive use among active-duty soldiers.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to (1) quantify postpartum uptake of long-acting reversible contraception among active-duty female US Army soldiers and (2) identify de

BACKGROUND: Integrating family planning interventions with HIV studies in developing countries has been shown to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission and simultaneously reduce HIV and unintended pregnancy in high-risk populations. As part of a prospective cohort study on HIV incidence and risk factors in Zambian women having unprotected sex, we also offered family planning counseling and immediate access to long-acting reversible contraceptives. Although long-acting reversible contraceptives are the most effective form of contraception, many Zambian women are limited to oral or injectable

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Teenage pregnancy rates in the United States remain at epidemic proportions. To help stem the tide of adolescent pregnancy, both the American Academy of Pediatrics and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists have released policy statements that long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARC) be considered the first-line option for contraception in adolescents. Despite the recommendations and efficacy, LARCs are utilized by less than 5% of American teens. The purpose of this review is to elucidate the barriers to adolescent access to LARC, which are broken down into

We aimed to determine the prevalence and factors associated with the use of long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) among women of reproductive age in Tanzania. We analyzed the Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data from 2015 to 2016. The study included 8189 women aged 15-49 years. The relationship between various factors and LARC use was determined through various analyses. Among women with a partner/husband, 7.27% used LARCs, 21.07% were grand multiparous, and 20.56% did not desire more children. Women aged 36-49 years (adjusted odds ratio (AOR)-2.10, 95% confidence interval

BACKGROUND: The validity of the theory of planned behavior (TPB) in predicting health behavior intention has proven its applicability to various health behaviors, such as condom uptake, HIV prevention, and contraception use in resource-limited settings. However, the effectiveness of the TPB framework in understanding refugee women’s intention to switch from short-acting contraceptives (SAC) to long-acting and reversible contraceptives (LARC) remains unclear. This study examined how the TPB predicts refugee women’s intention to switch from SAC to LARC. METHODS: This study is a nested component

BACKGROUND: Measures of contraceptive effectiveness combine technology and user-related factors. Observational studies show higher effectiveness of long-acting reversible contraception compared with short-acting reversible contraception. Women who choose long-acting reversible contraception may differ in key ways from women who choose short-acting reversible contraception, and it may be these differences that are responsible for the high effectiveness of long-acting reversible contraception. Wider use of long-acting reversible contraception is recommended, but scientific evidence of acceptabil

CONTEXT: Despite the inclusion of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services in the minimum standards of health care in humanitarian settings, access to SRH services, and especially to contraception, is often compromised in war. Very little is known about continuation and switching of contraceptive methods in these settings. An evaluation of a contraceptive services program in North Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) was conducted to measure 12-month contraceptive continuation by type of contraceptive method (short-acting or long-acting).
METHODS: A stratified systematic sample o

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether medical students' intent to use long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) increased after exposure to the obstetrics and gynaecology (OB-GYN) clerkship.
METHODS: This is a prospective cohort study conducted at a US medical school. We administered a survey to students before and after the OB-GYN clerkship, asking about intent to personally use an intrauterine device (IUD) or implant in the future or recommend to a sexual partner, a family member, friend, or patient. We also asked about familiarity with method benefits and side effects. To compare pre and post

Objectives. To analyze births and birth intendedness after long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) removal among Medicaid-insured women. Methods. We linked all Delaware women with a Medicaid-covered LARC removal in 2012 to 2020 (n = 8047) to birth records and to Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) pregnancy intendedness survey responses (n = 241). Results. Births within 3 years of a Medicaid-covered LARC removal were much more likely to be to women in their 20s compared with all Medicaid births (63.5% vs 53.4%; P < .001). The intended proportion for births within 3 years of

Reproductive planning is essential for all women and most important for those with complex health conditions or at high risk for complications. Pregnancy planning can allow these high-risk women the opportunity to receive preconception counseling, medication adjustment, and risk assessment related to health conditions that have a direct impact on maternal morbidity and mortality risk. Despite the need for pregnancy planning, medically complex women face barriers to contraceptive use, including systemic barriers, such as underinsurance for women at increased risk for complex medical conditions
