Intra-Articularly Injectable Ion-Coordinated Bionic Lubricants Improve Rheumatoid Arthritis Recession via Pro-Regenerative Reprogramming of Synovial Macrophages.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic autoimmune disease that causes serious joint damage and functional loss, which is predominantly associated with the aberrant activation of synovial macrophages. Herein, we report an injectable ion-coordinated bionic lubricant to efficiently reprogram synovial macrophages into pro-regenerative phenotypes for RA treatment. For this purpose, rhein (Rh)-modified PEGylated liposomes were integrated with coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) for macrophage-targeted delivery (LipQ10-Rh), which were subsequently embedded into dynamic hyaluronic acid (HA)-based hydrogel matrices

Physical and chemical characteristics of soot particles from GDI engines: Roles of fuels, lubricants, and transient driving cycles.

Particulate matter emissions from gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines have become a growing environmental and health concern due to their ultrafine particle sizes, high reactivity, and potential toxicity. As global emission regulations become increasingly stringent, a deeper understanding of the physical and chemical characteristics of GDI soot is critical for developing effective control strategies, particularly in optimizing gasoline particulate filter (GPF) performance. This review investigates the physical and chemical properties of soot particles emitted from GDI engines, focusing on

Colloids in lubrication: Development of amphiphiles from molecular structure to tribological performance.

Lubrication is often applied at interfaces where friction occurs upon relative motion. In boundary lubrication regimes, amphiphilic lubricant additives spontaneously adsorb onto the solid/liquid interfaces, tailoring surface properties and decisively dictating macroscopic lubrication performance. This process is essential for the proper functioning of machinery and for prolonging its service life. The molecular structure of amphiphilic compounds is a key determinant of their interfacial adsorption behavior, which directly influences lubrication quality. Recent advances in characterization tech

Molecular Lubricant Mitigates Self-Assembled Monolayer Aggregation in Perovskite Photovoltaics.

Molecular aggregation in self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) remains a critical bottleneck for inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs), particularly at buried interfaces where this phenomenon induces detrimental defects that severely compromise photovoltaic performance and operational stability. Addressing this challenge requires the development of novel functional materials capable of precisely regulating molecular packing in SAMs and suppressing their aggregation, which is a key research direction for enhancing device efficiency and durability. Herein, we introduce 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium te

When Lubricant Retention Increases Ice Adhesion: Ionic Liquids in SLIPS.

Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) can reduce ice adhesion, but their durability depends on coupled wetting, rheological, and phase-transition effects. Here, seven imidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) with varied alkyl and disiloxane substituents were evaluated as lubricants for laser-textured superhydrophobic aluminum. Surface tension, viscosity, thermal behavior, lubricant retention, wetting, and ice adhesion at -10 °C were correlated over 30 icing-deicing cycles. All freshly prepared coatings were water-wettable but exhibited weak droplet pinning, with sliding angles of 1.4-7.5°, de

An integrated lubricating and antibacterial hydrogel coating for the inner surface of medical catheters.

Silicone rubber (PDMS) catheters are prone to tissue friction and bacterial infection due to their inherent hydrophobicity, yet achieving a durable and functional coating on the inner lumen remains technically challenging. This study presents a multifunctional hydrogel coating designed for the inner wall of medical silicone tubing to address these issues. The coating, composed of PHEMA-PVP-glycerol, was applied via selective benzophenone pretreatment, followed by UV curing. Systematic optimization revealed that a 40% glycerol content achieves an optimal balance of properties, yielding strong i

A Bioinspired Protein Bottlebrush Polymer with Enhanced Lubricating and Anti-Inflammation Properties.

The development of biomimetic lubricants with superior lubrication, anti-inflammatory activity, and biocompatibility is urgently needed for the treatment of osteoarthritis (OA). Inspired by the architecture of biological lubricin and the exceptional lubrication of synovial joints, we designed a protein-based brush polymer by employing proteins as intrinsic macromolecular backbones. Specifically, we synthesized a biomimetic bottlebrush polymer, mHSA-g-PMPC, in which a denatured human serum albumin (HSA) backbone was grafted with zwitterionic poly[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl phosphorylcholine] (PMP

Injectable hydrogel with persistent interfacial lubrication and anti-inflammatory for osteoarthritis therapy.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic degenerative joint disease characterized by lubrication failure of cartilage interface and synovial inflammation. However, current injectable biomaterials rarely provide long-lasting lubrication while achieving sustained anti-inflammatory therapy. Herein, we developed a persistent interfacial lubrication hydrogel (CPD-OD/MSN@AP) through dynamic Schiff base crosslinking of a hydration enhanced chitosan derivative (CPD) and oxidized dextran (OD), with antler peptide-loaded mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN@AP) incorporated into the network. The resulting hydro

Automated Covalent Microcontact Bioprinting of Lubricant-Infused Microarrays for Biological Assays.

Microcontact bioprinting (µCP), which utilizes elastomeric stamps to transfer biorecognition agents (bioinks) onto substrates, offers advantages such as customizability, cost-effectiveness, and versatility for bioassays. Despite its prevalent use in laboratory settings, µCP faces challenges in achieving the repeatability and reproducibility required for industrial applications. Here, a µCP method is introduced that accommodates the immobilization of various biorecognition agents, while preserving bioactivity for use in bioassays. A key innovation lies in combining µCP with fluorosilanization t

Confined Liquids Studied by Resonance Shear Measurement: Molecular Mechanism of Lubrication.

Confined liquids present intriguing phenomena not only for foundational research but also for various engineering applications, particularly in tribology. When liquids are confined in a nanospace between solid substrates, they exhibit unique properties different from those of the bulk state due to altered molecular packing and motion restrictions and/or molecular interaction with the substrate surfaces. It has profound implications in the study of lubrication, especially in boundary lubrication where energy efficient low-viscosity lubricants typically lead to high friction and wear. Recent fin

Anti-biofouling organogel and substrate independent coatings with a continuous lubricating network.

Organogels have distinct advantages over hydrogels in terms of solvent compatibility, mechanical robustness, prolonged thermal and environmental durability, and affinity for hydrophobic compounds. However, organogels have yet to replace hydrogels for biomedical applications owing to toxicity concerns, lack of chemical durability, ease of fabrication, and flexibility of using green solvents. The current work exploits the facile amine-epoxy ring opening reaction to develop a mechanically durable, environmentally and thermally stable organogel that is strategically a) loaded with an antimicrobial

The Last Dance of Lubrication: Capturing Ultralow Friction before Full Evaporation.

Unsteady friction phenomena driven by lubricant evaporation are pervasive across a wide range of applications, from precision machinery to extreme-environment systems. Contrary to the assumption that the friction coefficient (COF) monotonically increases with lubricant evaporation, we identified a remarkable ultralow friction state preceding dry friction. Using a PDMS-ceramic tribological system lubricated by ethanol, we observed that the COF dropped to 0.01-0.03 and persisted for ∼10 s before the full evaporation of lubricant, governed by a nanoscale boundary film rather than a liquid film. Nanoparticle Lubricant and Imaging Agent: Preventing and Assessing Cartilage Tissue Damage.

Introducing additives to industrial lubricants reduces friction and wear between articulating metal surfaces by mechanistically impeding interfacial adhesion, heat dissipation, and abrasion. With this inspiration, we report the synthesis and use of tantalum oxide (Ta2O5) nanoparticles as a nanolubricant and tribosupplement (i.e., tribology-augmenting agent) for articular cartilage. Further, as tantalum oxide absorbs X-rays, the nanolubricant is also a contrast-agent for computed tomography (CT). These dual purpose nanoparticles, decorated with a short poly (ethylene glycol) and cationic trimet

Injectable lubricant-coated hyaluronic acid-dopamine for the repair of early osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is an irreversible disease of continuous degradation of cartilage, and natural joint super-lubrication is thought to provide hydrated lubrication to articular cartilage. Synovial joint fluid consists of hyaluronic acid (HA) and numerous brush-like macromolecules, exhibits a high affinity for cartilage proteins, and forms a hydrated layer on the cartilage surface. When cartilage friction increases, the surface layer of the cartilage becomes ruptured or damaged, and the cartilage hydration layer is destroyed, subsequently evolving into early OA. In this study, dopamine (DOPA)

Confinement enhanced viscosity vs shear thinning in lubricated ice friction.

The ice surface is known for presenting a very small kinetic friction coefficient, but the origin of this property remains highly controversial to date. In this work, we revisit recent computer simulations of ice sliding on atomically smooth substrates, using newly calculated bulk viscosities for the TIP4P/ice water model. The results show that spontaneously formed premelting films in static conditions exhibit an effective viscosity that is about twice the bulk viscosity. However, upon approaching sliding speeds in the order of m/s, the shear rate becomes very large, and the viscosities decrea

Construction of Zwitterionic Coatings with Lubricating and Antiadhesive Properties for Invisible Aligner Applications.

Invisible aligners have been widely used in orthodontic treatment but still present issues with plaque formation and oral mucosa abrasion, which can lead to complicated oral diseases. To address these issues, hydrophilic poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (polySBMA) coatings with lubricating, antifouling, and antiadhesive properties have been developed on the aligner materials (i.e., polyethylene terephthalate glycol, PETG) via a simple and feasible glycidyl methacrylate (GMA)-assisted coating strategy. Poly(GMA-co-SBMA) is grafted onto the aminated PETG surface via the ring-opening reaction of G

Lubricating Microneedles System with Multistage Sustained Drug Delivery for the Treatment of Osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a typical joint degenerative disease that is prevalent worldwide and significantly affects the normal activities of patients. Traditional treatments using diclofenac (DCF) as an anti-inflammatory drug by oral administration and transdermal delivery have many inherent deficiencies. In this study, a lubricating microneedles (MNs) system for the treatment of osteoarthritis with multistage sustained drug delivery and great reduction in skin damage during MNs penetration is developed. The bilayer dissolvable MNs system, namely HA-DCF@PDMPC, is prepared by designating the comp

Lubricin-Inspired Nanozymes Reconstruct Cartilage Lubrication System with an "In-Out" Strategy.

Lubricin, secreted primarily by chondrocytes, plays a critical role in maintaining the function of the cartilage lubrication system. However, both external factors such as friction and internal factors like oxidative stress can disrupt this system, leading to osteoarthritis. Inspired by lubricin, a lubricating nanozyme, that is, Poly-2-acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid sodium salt-grafted aminofullerene, is developed to restore the cartilage lubrication system using an "In-Out" strategy. The "Out" aspect involves reducing friction through a combination of hydration lubrication and ball-b
