Thinking "outside the box": The effect of nontarget snails in the aquatic community on mollusc-borne diseases.

There is a great need to understand the impact of complex communities on the free-living parasite stages that are part of them. This task becomes more complex as nonnative species emerge, changing existing relationships and shaping new interactions in the community. A relevant question would be: Can the coexistence of nontarget snails with the target hosts contribute to trematodasis control? We used field and experimental approaches to investigate nonnative competitor-induced parasite dilution. During a three-year field study, we investigated digenean infection in Lymnaea stagnalis from eight

Electrophoretic studies on the digestive gland esterases of some biomphalarid and lymnaeid snails.

Because of the problems encountered in the classification of snails of medical importance, biochemical methods have been sought to help clarify the situation. Of these, the separation of the enzymes of adult snails by electrophoresis seems the most promising but very few attempts have been made so far to use the results for taxonomic studies. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the use of the enzyme systems of neotropical planorbid and of lymnaeid snails to elucidate their taxonomy and also snail-schistosome relationships at the species and population levels. The findings show the

Studies on human fascioliasis in Egypt. 1--Seasonality of transmission.

The present study aimed at investigating the seasonality of human fascioliasis. The monthly distribution of acute infection was studied together with the monthly Lymnaea cailliaudi snail density and infection Infection was observed in both snail and human host through out the year. However maximal snail infection was observed during the months of June and July while the number of acute human infections peaked in August. It was concluded that summer was the highest transmission season. The clinical incubation period was considered one or two months.

Large-scale spatial drivers of avian schistosomes in Northern Michigan inland lakes.

Avian schistosomes are snail-borne trematode parasites (Trichobilharzia spp.) that can cause a nasty skin rash in humans when their cercariae mistake us for their normal bird hosts. We sought to investigate drivers of the spatial distribution of Trichobilharzia cercaria abundance throughout Northern Michigan lakes. For 38 sites on 16 lakes, we assessed several dozen potential environmental predictors that we hypothesized might have direct or indirect effects on overall cercaria abundance, based on known relationships between abiotic and biotic factors in wetland ecosystems. We included variabl

Effects of temperature on the life history traits of intermediate host snails of fascioliasis: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The impact of climate change has led to variations in various biological processes, leading to altered transmission dynamics of infectious diseases, including snail-borne diseases (SBDs). Fascioliasis is one of the neglected zoonotic tropical snail-borne diseases caused by the trematode of the genus Fasciola. This review focused on laboratory experimental and model studies that evaluate the potential effect of temperature change on the ecology and biology of the intermediate host snails (IHS) of Fasciola. METHODS: A literature search was conducted on Google Scholar, EBSCOhost, and

What are the elements of motivation for acquisition of conditioned taste aversion?

The pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis is capable of being classically conditioned to avoid food and to consolidate this aversion into a long-term memory (LTM). Previous studies have shown that the length of food deprivation is important for both the acquisition of taste aversion and its consolidation into LTM, which is referred to as conditioned taste aversion (CTA). Here we tested the hypothesis that the hemolymph glucose concentration is an important factor in the learning and memory of CTA. One-day food deprivation resulted in the best learning and memory, whereas more prolonged food deprivation

[Some enzymes associated with lipid catabolism in the Fasciola hepatica larvae--Galba truncatula system. I. Esterases and lipases].

Histochemical and cytofotometric techniques were used to detect esterase and lipase in the hepatopancreas of the snail Lymnaea truncatula and in larval stages of its parasite Fasciola hepatica. Activities of both enzymes were shown to increase in the infected hepatopancreas, compared with the control. The effect is ascribed by the authors to compensation processes emerging as a defence mechanism in the snail. Both enzymes, esterase and lipase proved to be highly active in tissues of sporocysts, rediae and cercariae, thus demonstrating the larvae to be capable of katabolism of lipids and utilis

Schistosome cercariae as the causative agent of swimmer's itch in Iceland.

During late summer in 1995 to 1997, repeated outbreaks of maculopapular skin eruptions were noted on the legs of children after wading in the pond in the Family Park in Laugardalur, Reykjavík, Iceland. Clinical symptoms developing on the legs resembled those of cercarial dermatitis. An examination of Lymnaea peregra snails from this pond and from the adjacent Lake Tjornin resulted in detection of previously undescribed schistosome cercariae. This is the first report of schistosomes in Iceland and also the most northern occurrence of these parasites in Europe.

Preliminary Survey of Larval Trematodes in Freshwater Snails of Phitsanulok Province in Lower Northern Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Freshwater snails serve as intermediate hosts for a variety of trematodes that cause illness in the human and animal populations. Several species of freshwater snails in Thailand have been found to have larval trematode infections. We aimed to investigate a freshwater snail in Phitsanulok Province and report on its current status of larval trematode infection. METHODS: Freshwater snails were collected from six localities (rice field and irrigation canal) by handpicking and using a count per unit of time sampling approach. The snails were identified by their external shell morpholo

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL SITUATION OF URINARY SCHISTOSOMIASIS IN TAMWAH AREA, GIZA, EGYPT: ASSESSMENT AND CONTROL.

Preliminary studies were carried out on schistosomiasis in Giza Governorate for the last three years. These studies revealed that Tamwah village was one of areas afflicted by the highest number of Schistosoma haematobium infection cases. 'The study assessed the epidemiological situation of S. haematobium by parasitological and snail surveys. During April 2016, urine samples of 1285 children collected from three primary schools were centrifuged for microscopic examination. Also a snail survey was done along the shore (700m length). The snail were classified and examined for cercariae by light e

Dermatitis caused by cercariae of Orientobilharzia turkestanicum in the Caspian Sea area of Iran.

Cercarial dermatitis is very common among rice farmers in the Caspian Sea area of Iran. The characteristic eggs of Orientobilharzia turkestanicum were found in the feces of a plowing bull. Fifty-six percent of uninfected Lymnaea gedrosiana maintained at 24-25 degrees C produced cercariae, identical to those from natural infections, 21 days after exposure to the miracidia obtained from the feces of the bull. Cercariae of O. turkestanicum from naturally infected L. gedrosiana produced dermatitis on the arm of one of us.

The epidemiology of fascioliasis in Malawi: I. The epidemiology in the intermediate host.

Fasciola gigantica Cobbold was studied in the intermediate host snail. On snail survey Lymnaea natalensis Krauss was the species found responsible for the transmission of Fasciola gigantica in Malawi. The ecology of this snail was studied at 5 different habitats spread throughout Malawi. The snail population was recorded high from April to October. The epidemiological cycle of Fasciola gigantica in the snail was determined and it was shown that snail infection was high in April and May and thus more metacercariae are released in August to October following such an infection. Studies on the molluscicidal actvity of Calendula micrantha officinalis (Compositae) on fascioliasis transmitting snails.

The molluscicidal activity of ethanolic extracts of Calendula m. officinalis (flowers and leaves) was used as plant molluscicides against Lymnaea cailliaudi. The results indicated that flowers extract possess a molluscicidal activity more than leaves extract and the LC50 was 35 and 52.17 ppm respectively. The mortality rate of exposed snails was increased by prolongation of the exposure time. The molluscicidal effect resulted in enhancing energy utilization and nutrient consumption since glucose, lipids, proteins and triglycerids were greatly reduced. The stomach and digestive gland of the tre

Chiral blastomere arrangement dictates zygotic left-right asymmetry pathway in snails.

Most animals display internal and/or external left-right asymmetry. Several mechanisms for left-right asymmetry determination have been proposed for vertebrates and invertebrates but they are still not well characterized, particularly at the early developmental stage. The gastropods Lymnaea stagnalis and the closely related Lymnaea peregra have both the sinistral (recessive) and the dextral (dominant) snails within a species and the chirality is hereditary, determined by a single locus that functions maternally. Intriguingly, the handedness-determining gene(s) and the mechanisms are not yet id

Two dopamine receptors: biochemistry, physiology and pharmacology.

In 1979, two categories of dopamine (DA) receptors (designated as D-1 and D-2) were identified on the basis of the ability of a limited number of agonists and antagonists to discriminate between these two entities. In the past 5 years agonists and antagonists selective for each category of receptor have been identified. Using these selective drugs it has been possible to attribute the effects of DA upon physiological and biochemical processes to the stimulation of either a D-1 or a D-2 receptor. Thus, DA-induced enhancement of both hormone release from bovine parathyroid gland and firing of ne

Anatomical studies of sibling species within neotropical lymnaeids, snail intermediate hosts of fascioliasis.

Several anatomical parameters of the reproductive system have been used to distinguish Lymnaea cubensis from L. viatrix, the snail hosts of fascioliasis in South America and the Caribbean area. Three samples have been collected in the type localities of L. cubensis (Cuba), L. viatrix var. A ventricosa (Argentina, Río Negro Lower Valley), and L. viatrix var. B elongata (Peru, Lima), respectively. Only one parameter, the relative lengths of the penis sheath and preputium, showed significant differences between L. viatrix var. ventricosa and the two other taxa. None of the studied parameters sepa

Separation of outer cysts from metacercariae of Fasciola gigantica in an aqueous two-phase system.

The outer cysts (Oc) of Fasciola gigantica metacercariae (Mc) were separated in an aqueous two-phase system composed of polyethylene glycol and dextran in distilled water. A large number of separated Mc without Oc were recovered in the bottom layer rich in dextran in the system. Ten separated Mc in the layer were used to inoculate the mouse with a syringe and juveniles were recovered from the animals on the 14th day. When the number of juveniles recovered was compared with that from the mice infected orally with the same number of Mc, there was a significant difference between them (P < 0.05).

A novel molluscan CNS organ culture for the examination of adult nerve regeneration.

BACKGROUND: Central nervous system (CNS) regeneration is crucial for re-establishing neural connections following injury. Though some adult vertebrates have regeneration-competent CNS, invertebrate CNS also provide useful model systems for examining cellular and molecular mechanisms promoting regeneration. NEW METHOD: Using the mollusc Lymnaea stagnalis, we have developed a novel ex vivo CNS organ culture to examine regenerative neurite outgrowth from cut nerves floating at the air-liquid interface. RESULTS: We determined that single CNS organ cultures produced more outgrowth than co-culture

Ecology and molecular validation of species of vector snails of fascioliosis and schistosomiosis in Bangladesh.

Freshwater snails are important intermediate hosts for several parasitic diseases, including fascioliosis and schistosomiosis, with significant impacts on human and animal health. In Bangladesh, vector snails have been identified only by morphology. Here, we validate the species of freshwater snails acting as intermediate hosts for Fasciola and Schistosoma spp. using molecular and bioinformatics tools. Following morphology and morphometrics, we identified 9 species of snails: Lymnaea auricularia, Lymnaea luteola, Indoplanorbis exustus, Physa acuta, Viviparus bengalensis, Brotia spp., Thiara sp
