OBJECTIVE: To examine the expression of adhesion molecules on gastric intra-epithelial lymphocytes (IELs) from patients infected with Helicobacter pylori.
DESIGN: The expression of adhesion molecules and T-cell activation markers by gastric IELs from patients with gastritis or duodenal ulceration was examined using two-colour flow cytometry. Ten of the patients were H. pylori positive and eight were H. pylori negative.

Lichen planus annularis is a relatively rare skin manifestation of lichen planus. The mechanisms in the formation of annular lesions are not fully understood. We reported here a 57-year-old female with this disease. U937 cells provide a co-stimulatory signal for CD3-mediated T-cell activation which is independent of the CD28/CD80/CD86 interaction. We have investigated a CD28 co-stimulation in anergic T cells in staphylococcal enterotoxin B-inoculated mice by stimulating the cells with a plate-coated anti-TCR antibody in the presence or absence of an anti-CD28 antibody. CD28 co-stimulation increased the levels of IL-2 and IL-4 mRNAs in naive CD4+V beta 8+ T cells. However, it did not increase the levels of IL-4 mRNA at all and only partially increased those of IL-2 mRNA in anergic T cells. We have examined the expression and function of rat CD54, a homologue of human intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), by the continuously growing rat thyroid cell line FRTL-5.
