Incremental validity of the MMPI-2 Content Scales: a preliminary study with brain-injured patients.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the usefulness of the MMPI-2 Content Scales among traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients. DESIGN: Hierarchical stepwise regression analyses with the SCL-90-R scales as the criterion variables were conducted to determine the incremental validity of the Content Scales beyond the information provided by the Clinical Scales. PARTICIPANTS: 27 persons with moderate to severe TBI who had been discharged to the community from inpatient rehabilitation between 6 months and 4 years before the beginning of the study. RESULTS: The Content Scales accounted for an additional 4% to 36%

Screening of Mood Symptoms Using MMPI-2-RF Scales: An Application of Machine Learning Techniques.

(1) Background: The MMPI-2-RF is the most widely used and most researched test among the tools for assessing psychopathology, and previous studies have established its validity. Mood disorders are the most common mental disorders worldwide; they present difficulties in early detection, go undiagnosed in many cases, and have a poor prognosis. (2) Methods: We analyzed a total of 8645 participants. We used the PHQ-9 to evaluate depressive symptoms and the MDQ to evaluate hypomanic symptoms. We used the 10 MMPI-2 Restructured Form scales and 23 Specific Problems scales for the MMPI-2-RF as predict

Evaluation of psychological symptoms among presymptomatic HD gene carriers as measured by selected MMPI scales.

Individuals at-risk for Huntington disease (HD), both HD gene carriers and nongene carriers, were recruited to determine whether psychological changes are detectable among clinically presymptomatic individuals who carry the HD allele. Each participant underwent genotyping to determine HD gene carrier status and a clinical assessment that included a quantified neurological examination and an abbreviated Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI): the Hypochondriasis, Depression, Psychasthenia, Neuroticism, Cynical Hostility, and Irritability Scales and the Harris Subscales of Depression

Minor stressful life events (daily hassles) in chronic primary headache: relationship with MMPI personality patterns.

This study investigated the relationship between minor life events (i.e. daily hassles) and personality patterns from selected scales of MMPI in the persistence of primary headache in 83 patients. Comparisons between headache subgroups indicated that tension-type headache patients are much more likely than those with migraine to have experienced high level of microstress (hassles density), with mixed headache in between. Tension-type headache patients reported higher MMPI scores on scales 1, Hypochondriasis (somatic concern), scale 3, Hysteria (denial) and scale 7, Psychasthenia (anxiety), but

Further validation of the MMPI-3 personality disorder syndrome scales in a community mental health sample.

The purpose of the present study was to replicate and extend research on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-3 (MMPI-3) Personality Disorder (PD) Syndrome scales. A total of 289 participants were recruited from the community in Dunedin, New Zealand-all of whom were engaged in mental health treatment. We evaluated the validity of the PD Syndrome scales against various measures of traditional PDs, personality traits, and personality dysfunction using self-report, clinical-rating, and informant-report criteria. The findings provide support for the criterion validity of the MMPI-3 PD s

MMPI-2 characteristics of transsexuals requesting sex reassignment: comparison of patients in prehormonal and presurgical phases.

To assess psychopathology in transsexuals at different phases of sex reassignment, we administered the Spanish adaptation of the MMPI-2 (Avila-Espada & Jiménez-Gómez, 1999) to 107 male-to-female and 56 female-to-male transsexuals. Except for the Mf scale, mean T scores from the Clinical scales were within the normal range and did not differ between sexes. Male-to-female transsexuals seeking sex-reassignment hormonal therapy, but not female-to-male patients, scored significantly higher on the Depression, Hysteria, Psychopathic Deviate, Schizophrenia, and Social Introversion scales than patients

The Fake Bad Scale and MMPI-2 F-family in detection of implausible psychological trauma claims.

We tested the validity of the Lees-Haley Fake Bad Scale (FBS) and the family of MMPI-2 F scales (F-family; F, F(p), and F-K scales) in predicting improbable psychological trauma claims in an applied setting. Litigants reporting implausible symptoms long after minor scares and nonlitigants clinically referred following severe stressors completed the MMPI-2. Both groups were naturally matched on social class. The FBS demonstrated sensitivity, specificity, and positive predictive power in the detection of atypical problems but the F-family showed poor utility. FBS cutting scores derived from logi

Comparison of DWI offenders with non-DWI individuals on the MMPI-2 and the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test.

Two groups of driving-while-intoxicated (DWI) offenders with either one DWI offense or with repeat offenses were compared to a group of nonoffenders using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI-2) and the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST). Demographic information was also collected regarding their prior legal history, family history, and blood alcohol level at the time of the DWI arrest. The results indicated both DWI groups had scored significantly higher than the comparison group on the K, Psychopathic Deviate (Pd) Scale, Over-Controlled Hostility (O-H) Scale, and MacA

A new perspective on gender orientation measurement with the MMPI-2: development of the Masculine-Feminine Pathology Scale.

A new scale of gender orientation for the MMPI-2 (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-II; Butcher, Dahlstrom, Graham, Tellegen, & Kaemmer, 1989) called the Masculine-Feminine Pathology Scale, or Mfp, was developed as an alternative to the available Mf, GM, and GF scales. It differs from previous scales in its emphasis on symptomatic correlates of gender. Items were included in the new scale if they (a) discriminated between male and female psychiatric patients and (b) were likely to be indicators of psychopathology. Statistical analyses suggested an acceptably reliable but factorially

Associations Between MMPI-3 Scales and Dimensional Personality Disorder Models in a Community Mental Health Sample.

As the field adopts dimensional models of personality disorders (DSM-5 Alternative Model of Personality Disorders [AMPD]; ICD-11 Personality Disorder), it is imperative that clinical assessment tools are available to assess them. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-3 (MMPI-3) is one such measure, as it is routinely used in clinical practice and assesses a variety of psychological symptoms. The current study aimed to build upon previous literature using a community mental health sample and a multi-method approach. Specifically, a sample of 289 individuals enrolled in various mental

Predicting personality in adulthood from college MMPI scores: implications for follow-up studies in psychosomatic medicine.

To assess the long-term predictive utility of Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) content scales, 1,960 individuals who had completed the MMPI in college in 1964 or 1965 were administered two measures of adult personality, the NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI) and the Cook and Medley MMPI Hostility scale, in 1988. A comparison group of 274 men and women in the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging were given both MMPI and NEO-PI between 1981 and 1987. Predictive correlations between MMPI scales and NEO-PI factors were qualitatively similar to concurrent correlations, but approx

Further mapping of the MMPI-3 onto HiTOP in a primary medical care and a college student sample.

The Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP; Kotov et al., 2017, 2021) is offered as a dimensional alternative to traditional categorical diagnostic nosologies such as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) and International Classification of Diseases (ICD). HiTOP researchers have recently published an open-source assessment system for clinical implementation, the HiTOP Digital Assessment and Tracker (Jonas et al., 2021). Here, we argue that the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-3 (MMPI-3; Ben-Porath & Tellegen 2020a), given its structural similaritie

Changes in the Rorschach and MMPI-2 after electroconvulsive therapy (ECT): a collaborative assessment case study.

We used before-and-after testing with the Rorschach Inkblot Test (Exner, 1997/2003) and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (Butcher et al., 2001) to assist a psychotherapy client--a survivor of child abuse suffering from depression accompanied by hallucinations--in evaluating a course of electroconvulsive therapy that she underwent. The results of both tests indicated positive changes. During the collaborative discussion of the test results, especially the changes seen on the Rorschach, a deeper understanding of her skeptical response to evidence of improvement came to light and

Assessment of suicidal ideation in young men and women: the incremental validity of the MMPI-2 content scales.

This study of 139 women and 75 men investigated the incremental validity of the MMPI-2 in assessing suicidal ideation by examining the unique contribution of the 15 content scales beyond what is provided by the 13 basic validity and clinical scales. A multivariate analysis of variance resulted in a significant difference on the validity, clinical, and content scales for young men and women. Women scored significantly higher than men on the Hypochondriasis, Depression, Conversion Hysteria, and Masculinity-Femininity scales and lower than men on the Hypomania, Fears, Anger, and Type A scales. MMPI variables predictive of schizophrenia in the Copenhagen High-Risk Project: a 25-year follow-up.

Moldin et al. (1) have identified a cluster of Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) scales that discriminate adolescents at risk for schizophrenia from those not at risk. The present study examines how well Moldin's scales predict schizophrenic decompensation in a sample of 207 Danish adolescents at high genetic risk for schizophrenia. Subjects were assessed using a modified, 304-item MMPI in 1962 (mean age= 15.1 years) and diagnosed in 10-year and 25-year follow-ups. Premorbidly, schizophrenic subjects (n=31) scored higher than subjects with no mental illness on the frequency (F

Posteroventral pallidotomy: its effect on motor symptoms and scores of MMPI test in patients with Parkinson's disease.

Stereotaxic pallidotomy for Parkinson's disease (PD) is an old concept, which was gradually and mostly replaced by thalamotomy. Recently, posteroventral pallidotomy (PVP), originally proposed by Leksell et al., was reintroduced; this paper examines PVP in terms of its historical background, technical aspect and location of the surgical lesion, as well as clinical effects on motor and psychological symptoms. Posteroventral pallidotomy has been shown to be satisfactory in relieving rigidity and secondary akinesia, but not powerful enough in alleviating severe tremor. These are similar observatio

A hostility scale for the California Psychological Inventory: MMPI, observer Q-sort, and big-five correlates.

Using two samples, we developed and validated a hostility scale that can be scored from the California Psychological Inventory (CPI) and serves as an alternate for the Cook-Medley Hostility Scale (Ho; Cook & Medley, 1954). The CPI Hostility (H) scale consists of 33 items that are either duplicates or close equivalents of specific Ho items, and the two scales correlate at least .90 in samples differing in sex. The H and Ho scales show a similar pattern of correlations with conceptually relevant MMPI scales and with observer-rated personality attributes tapping Barefoot, Peterson, et al.'s (1991
