Angiostrongylus cantonensis Rat Lungworm Detected in Rats, Madagascar, 2022-2023.

Angiostrongylus cantonensis, the rat lungworm, is a zoonotic parasite that causes eosinophilic meningitis in humans; the parasite is maintained in rat definitive hosts and transmitted through gastropod intermediate hosts. We report A. cantonensis prevalence and mitochondrial genome from oral swab specimens from rats in Madagascar, supporting swabs for noninvasive detection of this parasite.

Evaluating a global health partnership rehabilitation training programme in Madagascar.

OBJECTIVE: Rehabilitation services play an important role in optimizing functional ability and societal integration for people with disabilities. The Madagascar Rehabilitation Programme (2011-2013) resulted from a global training partnership and led to 8 doctors achieving a university diploma in rehabilitation medicine. This paper describes a 2014 evaluation of the programme methods, results and learning points. METHODS: A combination of qualitative methods was used for the evaluation, based on a Theory of Change model, with informants from Madagascar and the UK. RESULTS: Malagasy trainees a

Estimation of Pneumonic Plague Transmission in Madagascar, August-November 2017.

INTRODUCTION: Between August and November 2017, Madagascar reported nearly 2500 cases of plague; the vast majority of these cases were pneumonic, resulting in early exponential growth due to person-to-person transmission. Though plague is endemic in Madagascar, cases are usually bubonic and thus result in considerably smaller annual caseloads than those observed from August-November 2017. METHODS: In this study, we consider the transmission dynamics of pneumonic plague in Madagascar during this time period, as well as the role of control strategies that were deployed to curb the outbreak and

[Cervical cancer screening in rural Madagascar: Feasibility, coverage and incidence].

OBJECTIVES: To assess the implementation of a cervical cancer screening strategy in rural Madagascar. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A mobile unit, equipped with a cold-coagulator, visited every six months the main health care centers in the Atsinanana area between 2013 and 2015. Cervical cancer screening was based on visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA). The lesions suggestive of intraepithelial neoplasia and limited to the cervix were coagulated on the same day. Non-eligible patients for immediate treatment were referred for appropriate investigations. We assessed the feasibility and the covera

Rift Valley fever during rainy seasons, Madagascar, 2008 and 2009.

During 2 successive rainy seasons, January 2008 through May 2008 and November 2008 through March 2009, Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) caused outbreaks in Madagascar. Human and animal infections were confirmed on the northern and southern coasts and in the central highlands. Analysis of partial sequences from RVFV strains showed that all were similar to the strains circulating in Kenya during 2006-2007. A national cross-sectional serologic survey among slaughterhouse workers at high risk showed that RVFV circulation during the 2008 outbreaks included all of the Malagasy regions and that the vir

Evaluation of azithromycin resistance in Treponema pallidum specimens from Madagascar.

Treponema pallidum resistance to azithromycin has been documented in the US, Canada, and Ireland. We found no evidence of resistance to azithromycin in specimens from 141 patients with syphilitic lesions in Madagascar suggesting resistance is geographically isolated and supporting use of azithromycin as alternative treatment for early syphilis in Madagascar.

Cryptosporidium species causing acute diarrhoea in children in Antananarivo, Madagascar.

A 13-month study of children presenting with acute diarrhoeal disease at hospitals and rehydration clinics in Antananarivo, Madagascar, was undertaken between May 2004 and May 2005. Cryptosporidiosis accounted for diarrhoea in 12 (5.6%) of the 215 children investigated. Cases of cryptosporidiosis were detected only in the rainy season, and the median age of cases was 13.5 months (range=1 day-27 months). As 11 of the cases of cryptosporidiosis were caused by Cryptosporidium hominis and only one by C. parvum, most of the cases were probably the result of anthroponotic transmission. GP60/45/15 ge

[Neglected shoulders reported at the Befelatanana Maternity Hospital (Antananarivo, Madagascar)].

We conducted a retrospective study on neglected shoulders during 12 months at the Maternity Hospital of Befelatanana, 31 cases among 4685 deliveries were reported. The majority of the pregnancies are not under medical supervision and no ultrasound is carried out during the third trimester. There were 8 cases of uterine rupture, 2 haemorrhage shocks, 6 syndromes of prerupture, 6 umbilical cord prolapses at the third degree and 6 tears of the cervix. 20 caesarean sections have been performed as well as a turning of foetus in utero in 3 women, 4 hysterectomies, and a conservative suture with uter

[Female genital tuberculosis: about 11 cases treated in Antananarivo (Madagascar)].

A 5 year prospective study on genital tuberculosis, a rather uncommon localization, has been undertaken in 11 women treated at the DAT-HIS of Antananarivo, Madagascar Clinical diagnosis is problematic, if not unfeasible, due to the polymorphism of genital tuberculosis in women. Only histological and bacteriological examinations are, so far, confirmatory In the future, recourse to polymerase chain reaction will facilitate diagnosis and will allow a more accurate assessment of the incidence of this aspect of tuberculosis infection. Genital tuberculosis compromises women's fertility Even though t

High frequency of human enterovirus species C circulation in Madagascar.

Four poliomyelitis outbreaks caused by vaccine-derived polioviruses have been reported recently, including one in Madagascar in 2002. In all cases, the viral strains involved were recombinant between poliovirus vaccine strains and nonpoliovirus strains, probably enterovirus species C. Nevertheless, little is known about the circulation and epidemiology of enteroviruses in the regions where these outbreaks occurred. To assess the circulation of enteroviruses (particularly enterovirus species C) in Madagascar, we genetically characterized 55 enterovirus strains isolated between 1994 and 2002. Th

Urban epidemic of bubonic plague in Majunga, Madagascar: epidemiological aspects.

After an absence of 62 years, an epidemic of plague occurred in the harbour city of Majunga (Madagascar) from July 1995 to March 1996, following sporadic cases in March and May 1995. By 15 March 1996, 617 clinically suspected cases of bubonic plague had been notified. Laboratory testing was carried out for 394 individuals: 60 (15.2%) were confirmed to have bubonic plague and 48 (12.2%) were considered as presumptive cases. The incidence was significantly higher in males in all age groups and in both sexes in the 5-19 age group. Twenty-four deaths were related to plague, but early treatment wit

Angiostrongylus cantonensis Lungworms in Definitive and Intermediate Hosts, Madagascar, 2024.

We assessed the prevalence of the rat lungworm, Angiostrongylus cantonensis, in rats and snails in Toamasina, Madagascar, using molecular techniques. Although no human cases of neuroangiostrongyliasis have been reported in Madagascar, the pathogen's presence in definitive hosts (2.5%, 2/78) and intermediate hosts (26.9%, 35/130) reveals active circulation and potential zoonotic risk.

Leprosy perceptions and health seeking behaviour in Miandrivazo district, Madagascar.

BACKGROUND: Leprosy remains a severe health and social problem in several low- and middle-income countries, with two main challenges: late diagnosis, which can lead to disabilities, and the burden of stigma and social exclusion. This study explored socio-cultural factors, including community perceptions and representations of leprosy, influencing access to and uptake of biomedical care in an endemic district of Madagascar. METHODOLOGY: A qualitative study using ethnographic techniques was conducted in the south-west Miandrivazo district of Madagascar. Theoretical sampling included patients an

Prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies across diverse environments in rural Madagascar.

It is estimated that billions of people around the world are affected by micronutrient deficiencies. Madagascar is considered to be particularly nutritionally vulnerable, with nearly half of the population stunted, and parts of the country facing emergency, near famine-like conditions (IPC4). Although Madagascar is generally considered among the most undernourished of countries, empirical data in the form of biological samples to validate these claims are extremely limited. Our research drew data from three studies conducted between 2013-2020 and provided comprehensive biomarker profile inform

Childhood blood lead levels and environmental risk factors in Madagascar.

One-third of children globally have blood lead levels (BLLs) exceeding the (former) US CDC reference value of 5 µg/dL; this value may be as high as one-half for children in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Lead exposure occurs through a variety of routes (e.g., water, dust, air), and in LMICs specifically, informal economies (e.g., battery recycling) can drive lead exposures due, in part, to absent regulation. Previous work by our team identified a ubiquitous source of lead (Pb), in the form of Pb-containing components used in manually operated pumps, in Toamasina, Madagascar. Charact

Diverse novel resident Wolbachia strains in Culicine mosquitoes from Madagascar.

Wolbachia endosymbiotic bacteria are widespread throughout insect species and Wolbachia transinfected in Aedes mosquito species has formed the basis for biocontrol programs as Wolbachia strains inhibit arboviral replication and can spread through populations. Resident strains in wild Culicine mosquito populations (the vectors of most arboviruses) requires further investigation given resident strains can also affect arboviral transmission. As Madagascar has a large diversity of both Culicine species and has had recent arboviral outbreaks, an entomology survey was undertaken, in five ecologicall

Antimicrobial resistance of bacterial enteropathogens isolated from stools in Madagascar.

BACKGROUND: Diarrheal diseases are a major public health problem in developing countries, and are one of the main causes of hospital admissions in Madagascar. The Pasteur Institute of Madagascar undertook a study to determine the prevalence and the pathogenicity of bacterial, viral and protozoal enteropathogens in diarrheal and non-diarrheal stools of children aged less than 5 years in Madagascar. We present here the results of the analysis of antimicrobial susceptibility of the bacteria isolated during this study. METHODS: The study was conducted in the community setting in 14 districts of M
