Use of Magnets as a Minimally Invasive Approach for Anastomosis in Esophageal Atresia: Long-Term Outcomes.

Introduction: The majority of esophageal atresia (EA) patients undergo surgical repair soon after birth. However, factors due to patient characteristics, esophageal length, or surgical complications can limit the ability to obtain esophageal continuity. A number of techniques have been described to treat these patients with "long-gap" EA. Magnets are a nonsurgical alternative for esophageal anastomosis. The purpose of this study was to report long-term outcomes for the use of magnets in EA. Materials and Methods: Between July 2001 and December 2017, 13 patients underwent placement of a magneti

Relation between chemical bonding and exchange coupling approaches to the description of ordering in itinerant magnets.

Two different approaches to explain and predict the types of magnetic ordering in the 3d metal series and their compounds are reviewed. According to the crossing theorem of Heine and Samson, the effective exchange coupling changes sign from negative (antiferromagnetic ordering) in the middle of 3d band to positive (ferromagnetic ordering) for the nearly empty or nearly filled d band cases. On the other hand, the analytical properties of the Crystal Orbital Hamilton Population, which is a measure of chemical bonding, predict only one crossing at the center of the band in the region of nonbondin

Tissue response to space closure in monkeys: a comparison of orthodontic magnets and superelastic coil springs.

Interest in using magnets for generating orthodontic forces started with the widespread availability of rare earth magnetic alloys. In vivo studies have indicated that a static magnetic field and/or corrosion products from the magnetic materials may induce biological effects when in close contact with cells or tissues. In the clinical situation, orthodontic magnets are often situated some distance away from the gingiva and bone. Consequently, the previously observed biological effects may not be found in an experimental situation mimicking the clinical setting. Thus, the present experimental s

Sustainable Recovery of Rare Earth Elements from Hard Disks: Grinding NdFeB Magnets and Financial and Environmental Analysis.

Rare earth elements (REEs), particularly neodymium (Nd), dysprosium (Dy), and praseodymium (Pr), are critical in the production of neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets used in electronic devices, wind turbines, and electric vehicles. Due to the limited availability of these metals, their recovery from waste electronic equipment such as hard disk drives (HDDs) offers a promising solution. The aim of this study was to develop a method to grind NdFeB magnets obtained from the physical recycling of HDD. The recycled magnets were ground using a planetary mill. A review of the literature highlights

Neodymium magnets migrated into an internal supravesical hernia: a rare case of foreign body ingestion in children.

BACKGROUND: Foreign body (FB) ingestion is a common event in children. The management of the ingested FB depends on the location, type, number, size of the FBs, patient age, and symptoms. Although most FBs pass spontaneously through the gastrointestinal tract without causing serious injuries, the ingestion of multiple high-powered magnetic pieces, especially neodymium magnets (NMs) increases the risks of morbidity and mortality. Supravesical hernia (SH) is rarely occurs in children, and few studies have reported SH in pediatric patients. We report an extremely rare case of ingested NMs that mi

White Light Emissive Dy(III) Single-Molecule Magnets Sensitized by Diamagnetic [Co(III) (CN)6 ](3-) Linkers.

The self-assembly of Dy(III) -3-hydroxypyridine (3-OHpy) complexes with hexacyanidocobaltate(III) anions in water produces cyanido-bridged {[Dy(III) (3-OHpy)2 (H2 O)4 ] [Co(III) (CN)6 ]}⋅H2 O (1) chains. Carbon cage confinement enhances magnetic anisotropy of single-molecule magnets Dy2O@C3v-C82 and Dy2S@C3v-C82.

This study investigates the structural and magnetic properties of endohedral metallofullerenes Dy2O@C3v-C82 and Dy2S@C3v-C82 through DFT and CASSCF methods. The results show that Dy2O@C3v-C82 exhibits a longer quantum tunneling of magnetization relaxation time and a higher effective energy barrier (Ueff) compared to Dy2S@C3v-C82. The rigid carbon cage framework enhances the local crystal field with strong axial anisotropy, effectively suppressing contributions from transverse fields and thereby inhibiting quantum tunneling of magnetization. Dynamic structure analysis shows that the encapsulate

Two-Dimensional Metal-Organic Framework with High-Performance Single-Molecule Magnets as Nodes Showing Magnetic Coercivity Photomodulation.

Addressing the spatial organization of high-performance single-molecule magnets (SMMs) and achieving stimuli-responsive switching of their magnetic bistability are pivotal challenges in molecular memory technologies, paving the way for advanced opto-magnetic devices. Herein, we utilize the photosensitive ligand 4,4'-bipyridine (BPy) as a linker to incorporate typical pentagonal-bipyramidal SMMs as nodes into a two-dimensional metal-organic framework (MOF), formulated as {[Dy1.5(OPh)2Cl(BPy)3(THF)1.5][(BPh4)1.5]·0.5THF}n (1). Two-piece oral facial prothesis retained with magnets for a complex maxillary facial defect: A clinical report.

Total flap failure is a devastating complication in head and neck reconstruction. This clinical report describes the rehabilitation of an extensive maxillectomy defect communicating with the midface by using a 2-piece magnet-retained orofacial prosthesis fabricated in heat-processed acrylic resin. The innovative design and choice of material allowed early rehabilitation of a patient receiving palliative care at a resource-constrained tertiary care oncology center. Prosthetic treatment served to reduce the period of hospitalization and helped the patient to resocialize.

Use of an intraocular handpiece for the removal of magnets from the oropharynx of a pediatric patient.

With the increasing availability of magnets within household objects and toys, otolaryngologists must be aware of the propensity of ingestions or impaction of magnets within the upper aerodigestive tract of pediatric patients. We describe a case of a 21-month old male who presented with throat pain after swallowing ten 0.5-inch magnetic balls, after which evaluation revealed the adherence the the of three magnets within the posterior oropharynx and an additional seven magnets in the small intestine. After an initial failed attempt to remove the pharyngeal magnets with forceps, the magnets were

[Rare earth magnets in conjunction with fixed orthodontics. An "attractive" solution for the positioning of impacted teeth].

Two rare earth permanent magnets are used to align impacted teeth: one is bonded on the crown of the ectopic tooth, the other, intraoral, guides the impacted tooth to the desired place by its attractive power. The intraoral magnet is fixed to an edgewise arch. The adjustments allowed by fixed appliance create better final tooth position than with removable appliance. Our experience depicts an improvement of stability in results and a diminution of periodontal breakdown.

Development of a compact cryogenic Penning trap with permanent magnets: An intermediate step toward the Shanghai Penning Trap.

Penning traps, renowned for their unparalleled precision in determining fundamental properties, such as mass and magnetic moments, are cornerstone instruments in modern physics. Their applications span from nuclear structure studies to stringent tests of quantum electrodynamics and CPT invariance. Although Penning traps have been demonstrated for fundamental studies, often employing superconducting magnets, their high cost and operational complexity remain challenges. In this work, we report the development of a compact cryogenic Penning trap that utilizes a permanent magnet to provide a confi

Micromagnetic Investigation of the Effect of Main-Phase Distribution on the Coercivity of Nd2Fe14B/Dy2Fe14B Exchange-Coupled Magnets.

The spatial distribution of different hard magnetic phases is a key factor affecting the coercivity of dual-main-phase rare-earth permanent magnets. However, the underlying relationship between main-phase distribution and magnetization reversal behavior in Nd2Fe14B/Dy2Fe14B magnets remains unclear. In this work, micromagnetic simulations based on MuMax3 and OOMMF are performed to systematically investigate the effects of main-phase spatial arrangement on the magnetic properties and magnetization reversal mechanisms of Nd2Fe14B/Dy2Fe14B exchange-coupled magnets. First, single-phase Nd2Fe14B and

Cochlear implants and 1.5 T MRI scans: the effect of diametrically bipolar magnets and screw fixation on pain.

BACKGROUND: The probability that a patient will need an MRI scan at least once in a lifetime is high. However, MRI scanning in cochlear implantees is associated with side effects. Moreover, MRI scan-related artifacts, dislodging magnets, and pain are often the most frequent complications. The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of pain in patients with cochlear implant systems using 1.5T MRI scans. METHODS: In a prospective case study of 10 implantees, an MRI scan was performed and the degree of pain was evaluated by a visual analog scale. Scans were performed firstly with and de

Three-Dimensional (3-D) Ferromagnetic Network of Mn12 Single-Molecule Magnets: Subtle Environmental Effects and Switching to Antiferromagnetic.

A new member of the Mn12 family of single-molecule magnets (SMMs) has been prepared and found to be the first of this family to give a 3-D ferromagnetic network. [Mn12O12(O2CC6H4-p-F)16(H2O)4] (2) was prepared by carboxylate substitution on the acetate derivative with p-F-benzoic acid and crystallizes as 2·8MeCN in space group I4̅2m with extensive formation of intermolecular C-H···F hydrogen-bonding. The latter leads to a combination of ferromagnetic (F) and antiferromagnetic (AF) interactions and an overall F network that gives a χMT value at low T that is abnormally high for an S = 10 ground

Improved heart repair upon myocardial infarction: Combination of magnetic nanoparticles and tailored magnets strongly increases engraftment of myocytes.

Cell replacement in the heart is considered a promising strategy for the treatment of post-infarct heart failure. Direct intramyocardial injection of cells proved to be the most effective application route, however, engraftment rates are very low (<5%) strongly hampering its efficacy. Herein we combine magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) loading of EGFP labeled embryonic cardiomyocytes (eCM) and embryonic stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (ES-CM) with application of custom designed magnets to enhance their short and long-term engraftment. To optimize cellular MNP uptake and magnetic force within the in

The effect of bite-blocks with and without repelling magnets studied histomorphometrically in the rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta).

The effect of bite-blocks with and without repelling magnets as proposed for the treatment of open bite was analyzed. Twelve male juvenile monkeys were divided into three groups of four. Group A was used as control, group B was given bite-blocks containing samarium cobalt disks, and group C received identical bite-blocks without active magnets. The monkeys were observed for 24 weeks before death. Histomorphometric evaluation was then performed on the molar roots, their periodontal tissues, the zygomaticotemporal suture, and the pterygomaxillary suture. Uncovering Giant Magnetic Anisotropy in Co(II) Single-Ion Magnets via Combined Ab Initio and Machine-Learning Approaches.

Single-ion magnets, particularly low-coordinate Co(II) complexes, are promising for high-density data storage; however, achieving large effective energy barriers while retaining strong magnetic anisotropy remains an unresolved challenge. In this work, we systematically extracted three-coordinate Co(II) complexes from reported X-ray crystal structures and subsequently expanded this set to 1053 complexes, thereby capturing a broad chemical diversity that spans homoleptic {CoX3} species (X = C, N, O, S) and heteroleptic motifs such as {CoX2Y} and {CoCClX} (X, Y = C, N, O, S, Cl, Br, I). Exploring a New Regime of Molecular Orbital Physics in 4d Cluster Magnets with Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering.

Molecular orbital systems with clusters of heavy transition metal (TM) ions are one of the most important classes of model materials for studying the interplay between local physics and effects of itinerancy. Despite a large number of candidates identified in the family of 4d TM materials, an understanding of their physics from competing microscopic energy scales is still missing. We bridge this gap by reporting the first resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurement on a well-known series of Ru cluster magnets with a 6H-perovskite structure Ba_{3}MRu_{2}O_{9} (M^{3+}=In^{3+}, Y^{3+},
