Colorectal malakoplakia in a child presenting as multiple polyposis coli.

Malakoplakia of the gastrointestinal tract is a rare chronic inflammatory disorder, usually affecting the descending colon, sigmoid colon and rectum. It is commonly seen in adults. Only few cases have been reported in children. We report a case of malakoplakia of colon and rectum in a 7-year-old child who presented with multiple polyposis coli.

[Vesico-cutaneous fistula revealing abdominal wall malakoplakia accompanied by Boeck's sarcoidosis].

UNLABELLED: Malakoplakia is an acquired granulomatous disorder first described by Michaelis and Gutmann in 1902. The pathogenesis of malakoplakia is hardly known, but it thought to be secondary to an acquired bactericidal defect in macrophages occurring mostly in immunosuppressed patients. CASE REPORT: 63-year-old female patient had been treated with methylprednisolone for ten years, because of pulmonary sarcoidosis. For six month, recurrent abdominal abscess and vesico-cutaneous fistula developed. Histological examination proved malakoplakia, and Escherichia coli was detected in the abscess

Treatment of malakoplakia with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole.

A case is described of malakoplakia involving the urinary tract and retroperitoneum with recalcitrant infection due to Escherichia coli which was not responsive to seemingly appropriate antibiotics and surgery for drainage, but which subsequently responded to treatment with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. It is speculated that this drug combination may be helpful because of the ability of trimethoprim to enhance the killing of viable undigested microorganisms inside malakoplakic macrophages.

Malakoplakia mimicking pelvic malignancy with liver metastasis and peritoneal carcinomatosis.

Malakoplakia is a rare chronic inflammatory condition characterised by defective macrophage function, most commonly affecting the genitourinary tract. Although usually localised, it may occasionally present as a mass-forming lesion mimicking malignancy. We report the case of a 46-year-old woman presenting with a pelvic mass, acute kidney injury, and hydroureteronephrosis. Imaging demonstrated a necrotic 10.3cm pelvic mass with lymphadenopathy and hepatic lesions, raising suspicion of metastatic gynaecological malignancy. Surgical exploration identified a fibrotic, thickened pelvic peritoneum w

Multiple-Organ Involvement of Malakoplakia Mimicking Malignant Neoplasms on 18 F-FDG PET/CT.

Abdominal contrast-enhanced CT was performed in a 61-year-old man with difficulties of urination and defecation for 4 months, which revealed huge rectal masses involving multiple adjacent organs, suspected as malignant lesions. 18 F-FDG PET/CT was subsequently performed for staging. The images showed intense FDG uptake and slightly hyperdense masses involving rectum, bladder, prostate, left ureter, and the anterior abdominal wall at the level of the pelvic cavity. Histopathological examination confirmed the masses were due to malakoplakia, which displayed as abundant von Hansemann cells aggreg

Malakoplakia and tuberculosis.

A 33 year old woman developed a soft mass in the left anterior neck following treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis. An incisional biopsy was performed and a cold abscess drained. Histology confirmed a diagnosis of tuberculosis. In addition, there were numerous intracellular bodies which resembled the Michaelis-Gutmann bodies of malakoplakia. This case however displayed some atypical histological, histochemical and ultrastructural features, which are highlighted in this report. The mass responded to combination antituberculous treatment.

Escherichia coli-associated renal malakoplakia in 2 dogs.

Malakoplakia is an uncommon granulomatous disease reported to affect mainly the urinary bladder and, less frequently, the urogenital tract, gastrointestinal tract, and lymph nodes. We describe cases of malakoplakia within the renal medulla of 2 dogs. Both dogs had a history of recurrent urinary tract infections with urine culture growth of Escherichia coli. Autopsy findings in dog 1 included ~60 tan-to-yellow, irregular nodules within the renal medulla, and tan-to-red, semi-firm nodules within the urinary bladder mucosa. Dog 2 had no gross changes within the kidneys but rather had ~20 red, sem

Malakoplakia of the urinary bladder in a young French Bulldog.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 4-month-old 5.9-kg sexually intact female French Bulldog was presented because of recurrent urinary tract infections in combination with pollakiuria, hematuria, and urinary incontinence. CLINICAL FINDINGS: A diagnosis of malakoplakia was made on the basis of results of hematologic and serum biochemical testing, abdominal ultrasonography, bacterial culture, and cystoscopic biopsies of the urinary bladder wall. Biopsy samples were sent for routine histologic examination and fluorescence in situ hybridization to confirm the presence of intracellular and subendothelial bacteri

[Case of renal parenchymal malakoplakia presenting as sepsis and treated with nephrectomy].

Malakoplakia is a rare chronic inflammatory condition characterized by defective macrophage function, most of which involve the genitourinary tract, and renal parenchymal involvement is uncommon. We present a case of malakoplakia affecting renal parenchyma. A 46-year-old woman with pyrexia and jaundice was referred to our department. Abdominal enhanced CT scan revealed a left pyelonephritis with ureteral stone and bilateral renal abscesses. Despite the insertion of a left ureteral stent and administration of antibiotics, the patient showed persistent high fever and elevated CRP, and no obvious

Cutaneous malakoplakia simulating relapsing malignant lymphoma.

This report describes the case of a 42-year-old man with malignant lymphoma, diffuse large non-cleaved cell type, who developed cutaneous malakoplakia in the left groin. The patient had widespread lymph node involvement, including a left inguinal mass which was clinically thought to represent recurrent lymphoma. The inguinal mass failed to regress after chemotherapy and irradiation, although lymphoma in other sites responded to chemotherapy. A skin biopsy of the area showed an ulcer and an abscess involving the dermis and subcutaneous tissue. Microscopically, a diffuse infiltrate of foamy hist

Misleading testicular masses.

Benign intrascrotal neoplasms of the testicle account for less than 10 per cent of all intrascrotal masses in postpubertal males. Radical inguinal orchiectomy is standard treatment for a firm, intratesticular mass. Of those patients so treated, 93 per cent of patients with this finding will have had the appropriate operation. There are misleading conditions, however, that can cause firm lesions in the testicle. There is a controversy over whether or not our current technology preoperatively can detect these benign lesions accurately. We encountered five different benign testicular masses withi
