State-space forecasting of Schistosoma haematobium time-series in Niono, Mali.

BACKGROUND: Much of the developing world, particularly sub-Saharan Africa, exhibits high levels of morbidity and mortality associated with infectious diseases. The incidence of Schistosoma sp.-which are neglected tropical diseases exposing and infecting more than 500 and 200 million individuals in 77 countries, respectively-is rising because of 1) numerous irrigation and hydro-electric projects, 2) steady shifts from nomadic to sedentary existence, and 3) ineffective control programs. Notwithstanding the colossal scope of these parasitic infections, less than 0.5% of Schistosoma sp. investigat

[Water contacts in dracunculiasis-infected patients in Mali: transmission risk activities].

The aim of this study lies in the identification of human activities responsible for the transmission of the Guinea worm in an endemic village in Diema Region in Mali. Human water contacts observations started after a census followed by the implementation of a bi-monthly notification system, carried out from May to November 1993. Water contacts were noticed and observed from the mid-July to the end of November of the same year. The first case of dracunculiasis observed was randomly drawn out of a list of the families with obvious cases. The patent case activities involving either surface water

[Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency in Mali. Epidemiology and pathological aspects].

I,858 semi quantitative G6PD determinations were done in Mali (mostly in the Point G Hospital, in Bamako). 15.7% of the men and 4.5% of the women had a G6PD deficiency. The age did not affect the incidence of the disease. G6PD deficiency was more frequent among the Sonrais than among the other ethnic groups tested. It did not occur more frequently among subjects having the sickling trait of AC hemoglobinopathy but no G6PD was found among subjects having a major hemoglobinopathy (SS or SC). Severe hemolytic anemia was rather infrequent among adults subjects. Hemolysis was induced by drugs--such

Prevalence of ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae isolated from blood cultures in Mali.

INTRODUCTION: The increasing frequency of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae is becoming a serious public health concern. This study sought to determine ESBL frequency in Enterobacteriaceae isolated from patients' blood cultures in two university teaching hospitals of Bamako, Mali. METHODOLOGY: During a three-month period, the presence of Enterobacteriaceae from blood cultures of patients admitted to the university teaching hospitals of Bamako was evaluated. The microbial identifications were initially performed with an API 20E gallery and VITEK2 locally in M

Ethnobotanical study of plants used against malaria in Sélingué subdistrict, Mali.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Plants have contributed to food security and disease treatments to rural populations in sub Saharan Africa for many centuries. These plants occupy a significant place in the treatment of diseases, such as malaria. In Mali, malaria is the leading cause of medical consultation and death. This infection is particularly dangerous for pregnant women and children under 5 years. The general aim of this research was to collect data on the knowledge of traditional health practitioners on malaria in the Sélingué area; particularly to document how traditional healers conce

[African histoplasmosis (Histoplasma capsulatum var. duboisii): a case report from Mali].

We report a case of disseminated African histoplasmosis with lymph node and digestive involvement in a 19-year-old man living in the Kayes district of Mali. The patient, HIV-seronegative and not otherwise immunocompromised, presented voluminous cervical and axillary adenopathies as well as retrosternal and mesenteric tumor lesions. Direct examination of biopsy tissue showed numerous specimens of Histoplasma capsulatum var. duboisii. Because direct fungal techniques are the easiest and the most effective method of diagnostic investigation, no cultures were performed. Intolerance to therapy with

The projected impact of climate change on the burden of Cryptosporidium in Mali, Kenya, and The Gambia.

BACKGROUND: Cryptosporidium is an important cause of moderate-to-severe diarrhea (MSD) among children under five, with the highest burden in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Cryptosporidium is highly climate sensitive, yet there has been no published literature projecting the incidence of Cryptosporidium under climate change in SSA where vulnerability to climate change is highest. METHODS: Utilizing monthly case counts of Cryptosporidium from two case-control studies in The Gambia, Kenya, and Mali, we modeled the relationship between monthly temperature, precipitation, and vulnerability factors with

Preferential transmission of minority and drug-resistant clones in polyclonal infections in Mali.

BACKGROUND: In polyclonal human malaria infections, the roles of individual clones in human-to-mosquito transmission and their relative transmissibility remain poorly understood. In addition, mutations conferring drug resistance can result in a transmission advantage or disadvantage. METHODS: Amplicon sequencing of complexity of infection and drug resistance markers was used to analyse post-treatment stage-specific malaria parasite dynamics in human blood infections and in the midguts of mosquitoes that became infected after direct membrane feeding assays (DMFAs). Blood samples originated fro

Population impact of malaria control interventions in the health district of Kati, Mali.

BACKGROUND: WHO and its partners have adopted alternative control interventions since the failure to eradicate malaria worldwide in the 1960s and 1970s. The aim of these interventions has been to redesign the control interventions to make them more effective and more efficient. The purpose of this study is to assess the population impact of control interventions implemented at the community health area level. METHODS: The analysis used data from the health information system on malaria cases and interventions (distribution of long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs), seasonal malaria che

Amazons in Mali? Women's experiences of breast cancer and gender (re)negotiation.

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer, with more than 2.31 million cases diagnosed worldwide in 2022. Cancer medicine subjects the body to invasive procedures in the hope of offering a chance of recovery. In the course of treatment, the body is pricked, burned, incised and amputated, sometimes shattering identity and often changing the way women perceive the world. In sub-Saharan Africa, incidence rates are steadily increasing and women are particularly young when they develop breast cancer. Despite this alarming situation, the scientific literature on breast cancer in sub-Saharan Afr

Metabolomic profiling and antianginal activity of the bark of Sterculia setigera from Mali.

The present work focuses on the phytochemical characterization and evaluation of antianginal activity of the bark of Sterculia setigera. It was collected and authenticated in the African region of Mali, where the local population largely employs this plant for the treatment of several diseases. In the context of traditional or folk medicine and recent progresses in alternative medicine practices, it is essential to expand the knowledge about the chemical composition of such medicinal plants. In this research, a direct-Mass Spectrometry (MS) technique, known as Rapid Evaporative Ionization Mass

Rabies surveillance-response in Mali in the past 18 years and requirements for the future.

CONTEXT: Rabies is endemic in Mali, but little is known about the distribution of rabies and its surveillance across the country. Documenting the evolution of rabies and the problems related to surveillance is useful to facilitate elimination of human rabies by 2030. METHOD: Data collected at the Central Veterinary Laboratory (LCV) from 1999 to 2017 and through the surveillance system functioning at household, health and veterinary structure levels, as established by the Global Vaccine Alliance funded project on the burden of rabies, between 2016 and 2017 in Bamako and the Sikasso region were
