Of 1433 consecutive patients who underwent mammography, 90 were subsequently found to have histologically confirmed carcinoma of the breast (85 invasive carcinoma, three lobular carcinoma in situ, two intraduct carcinoma). Sixty (67%) of the mammograms of the patients with cancer were reported correctly as carcinoma. There were 27 (30%) false negative reports and three (3%) equivocal reports. In 14 (16%) patients with false negative reports the biopsy was delayed by between 2 and 24 months. From January 1988 through December 1991, 81 men were examined for breast enlargement or mass in our Institute, by means of clinical examination, mammography, and US. The patients' age ranged 15-71 years (mean: 52 years). Of 81 studied patients, 71 had gynecomastia, 8 had adipomastia, 1 had an infiltrating ductal carcinoma, 1 an angiofibrolipoma and 1 a simple cyst. Mammography was recommended to 212 women, according to American Cancer Society guidelines, at the time of a work site-offered periodic health exam (PHE). We reviewed the radiographs of patients undergoing negative breast biopsies on the basis of false positive mammograms. In a small number of these patients, the radiologic error was attributable to the summation effect of superimposed focal areas of normal or dysplastic breast tissue giving the false impression of a mass.
