A perioperative audit of smoking, smoking cessation advice and pharmacological management of nicotine dependence: Are guidelines enough?

Smoking increases anaesthetic and surgical complications. The perioperative period provides an opportunity to give advice and initiate ongoing support to patients who smoke. Our aims were to determine perioperative smoking patterns and how well patients were supported to reduce smoking as well as compliance with the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists guidelines on smoking. We surveyed all adults having non-emergency surgery at Wollongong Hospital over an 8-week period in 2021. For those who smoked, we analysed their medical record for identification of smoking status and smoki

Auditing the Early Management of Suspected Scaphoid Fractures in Comparison With the National Agreed Standard: A Retrospective Study.

Introduction Scaphoid fractures are the most common carpal bone injury and a frequent reason for wrist immobilisation following trauma. However, many patients with clinical suspicion of scaphoid fracture are immobilised despite negative radiographs, and ultimately have alternative diagnoses. This study aimed to evaluate early management, imaging, and outcomes for patients presenting with suspected scaphoid fractures at a District General Hospital (DGH) in the United Kingdom (UK), comparing practice with current British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH) standards. Methods A retrospective a

Auditing the readiness of healthcare facilities for referral and management of pre-eclampsia cases in Zanzibar- a study protocol.

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are reported as the second leading root of maternal morbidity and mortality in Zanzibar. This study's goal is to determine if all public healthcare facilities in Zanzibar are prepared to manage pre-eclampsia cases and if lower-levels public healthcare facilities are ready to refer pre-eclampsia cases. This will be a descriptive cross-sectional study that will involve a total of 54 healthcare

A repeat audit of primary care management of group A streptococcal pharyngitis in Northland, New Zealand 2016.

INTRODUCTION One of the New Zealand Government's Better Public Services targets was to reduce the rate of acute rheumatic fever (ARF) nationally by two-thirds by 2017. Māori children and young people are disproportionately affected by ARF in the Northland District Health Board region. General practice contributes to ARF prevention in detecting and appropriately treating group A streptococcal (GAS) pharyngitis. An audit in 2012 suggested improvements in adherence to national guidelines were needed. AIM The aim was to reassess general practice adherence to national guidelines for the management

The British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) revised United Kingdom national guideline for the management of gonorrhoea in adults, 2011, identified five auditable outcome measures, namely, that all patients should receive first-line treatment, be screened or treated for chlamydial infection, have a test of cure (TOC), be offered written information and have partner notification carried out. The UK National Guideline for Gonorrhoea Testing, Clinical Effectiveness Group, BASHH, 2012, recommended in addition that all reactive nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) from pharynx and

Management of Gartland's type III supracondylar fractures of the humerus in children: the role audit and practice guidelines.

In 1995, we audited the outcome following Gartland's type III supracondylar fractures of the humerus in children. Closed reduction under anaesthesia (MUA) and cast immobilisation was the treatment of choice, with the treatment changed whenever displacement occurred. The result of the audit showed that 86% of cases were treated with this method. The rate of re-operation was 45.6%. Cubitus varus deformity developed in 50% of cases. Guidelines were introduced in order to abandon the use of MUA and cast immobilisation for type III fractures. The guidelines recommended treating these fractures with

Management of sharps injuries and contamination incidents in health care workers: an audit in the Wessex and Oxford regions.

Fifteen NHS occupational health departments from the Wessex and Oxford regions took part in an audit of the management of sharps injuries and contamination incidents. Data were collected prospectively for a series of 1102 incidents notified over a nine-month period. The rates of notified incidents for each department ranged from 9 to 44 incidents per 1000 staff members per year. The proportion of injured employees who were naturally immune to hepatitis B or had completed a full course of vaccination against the infection ranged from 57 to 83%, with the main shortfall occurring in ancillary wor

Decreased fetal movements - An audit of predictors and an evaluation of management based on a locally developed flow chart.

OBJECTIVES: Decreased fetal movements (DFM) is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. We aimed to look at the risk factors associated with DFM and outcomes of women who presented with and without DFM and outcomes before and after the implementation of a locally developed flow chart based on an evidence-based guideline. STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective audit of 1165 women ≥ 28 weeks' gestation with a singleton pregnancy who presented with concerns regarding DFM. We compared labor and neonatal outcomes to 4706 in a control group who did not present with concerns regarding FM. We also
