OBJECTIVE: To identify factors influencing implementation of a state-wide mandatory immunisation policy for healthcare workers (HCWs) in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, in 2007. Vaccines included were measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, hepatitis B, diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis, but not influenza.
METHODS: We evaluated the first 2 years of this policy directive in 2009. A qualitative study was conducted among 4 stakeholder groups (the central health department, hospitals, health professional associations, and universities). 58 participants were identified using maximum variation sampli

HPV vaccine offers a new approach to preventing HPV and associated conditions. The vaccine has mainly been studied in young women, and clinical trials have supported its efficacy in preventing genital warts and cervical precancers caused by targeted HPV types. While health care experts and others endorse the use of the vaccine, they disagree on making it mandatory. For now, lawmakers would like further discussion and debate before pushing legislation to make the vaccine a legal requirement.

Background: In Italy, the loss of confidence towards vaccination resulted in low vaccine coverage, also among healthcare workers (HCWs). Indeed, low vaccination coverage among HCWs can lead to dangerous outbreaks of disease, reduce productivity, and increase absenteeism. The aim of this study was to investigate the vaccine coverage and attitudes toward vaccination among HCWs. Methods: A multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted among HCWs referred to all hospitals of the Local Health Authority 02 of Abruzzo Region, Italy. The survey was based on the questionnaire proposed by the H-ProImm

INTRODUCTION: In 2018 the Council of Europe adopted a Recommendation on strengthened cooperation against vaccine preventable diseases. Among EU Member States, Italy has a long-lasting tradition of immunization policies implemented in the context of the National Health Service over the last forty years.
METHODS: We identify, report and critically appraise four immunization strategies implemented in Italy in recent years and quantitatively assess their impact on coverage rates and other selected indicators.
RESULTS: First: the regional law that suspended mandatory vaccination in the Veneto Reg

To reduce vaccine-preventable diseases in workers, workplace vaccination campaigns can be implemented on-site. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate adherence to workplace vaccination campaigns. Three databases, PubMed, ISI Web of Science, and Scopus, were screened systematically for articles in English or Italian addressing participation in an on-site vaccination program by employees. The following data was extracted: authors, year, country, type of vaccine, type of workplace, sample size, vaccination rate. Data on the prevalence of flu vaccination were calculated and pooled using

Dubbed the "inequality virus", coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has unveiled and magnified many of the global society's long-standing inequalities and health inequities. This work brings together the phenomena of increased inequality and health inequities felt by the poor and young working class of the Philippines and how they interact negatively with existing vaccine policies. The poor and the young were more likely to have experienced employment disruptions with limited access to technologies that allowed for teleworking. Informal economy workers suffered from diminished labor protection and d

Tetanus-diphtheria toxoid, influenza virus vaccines, and pneumococcal vaccine are recommended for older persons in the United States by the Centers for Disease Control. But most high-risk older persons remain unvaccinated, despite experiencing relatively high rates of tetanus, influenza-related complications, and pneumococcal disease, and having available effective, safe, and low-cost vaccines. Strategies for improving these vaccination rates require an intensive approach focused on (1) identifying older persons with high-risk conditions, (2) improving the delivery of vaccines, (3) improving t

BACKGROUND: Vaccination against mumps, introduced initially as recommended, from 2003 is mandatory in Poland and given as two dose scheme with MMR vaccine (mumps, measles, and rubella). Despite observed decline in mumps incidence for over a decade which is a result of conducted vaccinations, mumps is still a common childhood disease in Poland.
AIM: To assess epidemiological situation of mumps in Poland in 2012, including vaccination coverage in Polish population, in comparison to previous years.
METHODS: The descriptive analysis was based on data retrieved from routine mandatory surveillance

Desensitization to rabies is a result of successfully eliminating canine rabies in the United States, which occurred in 2007; however, the need for mandatory rabies vaccination in pets remains. Rabies cases are rare in comparison with other vaccine-preventable diseases in companion animals; however, because it is a zoonotic disease with the highest case fatality rate of any infectious disease demands the establishment of strict laws for disease prevention. Preventive strategies include addressing current concerns in consideration of disease surveillance, appropriate vaccination recommendations

In June 2002, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) approved draft recommendations concerning preparation for potential biological terror attacks that utilize the smallpox virus. ACIP recommends against both mandatory and voluntary vaccination of the general public. The present paper examines the moral and political considerations both for and against each of the general public vaccination options considered by the ACIP in the context of the state's authority over vaccination for the purposes of protecting public health. Although it is clear that compulsory mass vaccination i

INTRODUCTION: The top priority for active immunoprophylaxis of pertussis is the immunisation of infants as they can sometimes develop severe multiple-organ complications.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of the work is the identification of factors negatively affecting vaccine immunity to pertussis in preschool children prior to the administration of the first booster.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The research was conducted on 352 children from 4.5 to 5.9 years of age who were hospitalised in the University Children's Hospital in Lublin (Poland) from 1 January 2012 to 31 December 2015. The children taking part

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic drove the implementation of vaccine mandates to protect spaces and/or increase vaccine uptake, though their design, timing, and scope varied across jurisdictions. This study examines the associations of vaccine mandate announcements and removals with COVID-19 vaccine uptake in France, Italy, and California (USA).
METHODS: We employed interrupted time series (ITS) analysis using aggregated data from Our World in Data and the Oxford COVID-19 Government Response Tracker. The primary outcomes were the weekly number of first and booster doses per 100,000 people. W

Annual influenza vaccination of health care students and workers helps protect themselves and patients from influenza, which has a high disease burden during seasonal peaks in Australia. Health care students are an important cohort whose early attitudes and habits towards influenza vaccination may influence future behaviours. We explored the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours towards influenza vaccination of health care students in two universities from 2018 to 2020 using convergent mixed methodology. We also assessed the impact of two external events - the introduction of mandatory influenz

Introduction: Vaccination is a crucial tool for the primary prevention of infectious diseases. Thanks to widespread vaccination, in the last century smallpox has been eradicated, and the Americas and Europe have become polio-free. Areas covered: The aim of our study was to assess vaccination coverage in childhood up to booster preschool age in order to update the analysis on European trends of immunization coverage in the last nine years (2009-2017) and to assess the impact of different national policies on vaccine uptake. Expert opinion: Despite the good results, several EU countries are goin

INTRODUCTION: Influenza is a contagious viral infection and a significant seasonal threat to public health. Vaccinating healthcare workers (HCWs) is a critical strategy for protecting vulnerable patients and the healthcare workforce. In the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, vaccine uptake is <75%, despite the healthcare promotion initiatives and free vaccination campaigns. To guide future initiatives, this review aims to evaluate the evidence regarding influenza vaccine uptake among HCWs in the GCC, as well as the perceived enablers and barriers.
METHODS: A comprehensive search was co

Case-based varicella (chickenpox) surveillance is important for monitoring the impact of the varicella vaccination program. In 2002, the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) recommended that all states move toward case-based varicella surveillance by 2005; in 2003, varicella was made nationally notifiable. To ease the transition to case-based reporting, CSTE and CDC recommended starting with sentinel site or outbreak surveillance and then moving to statewide case-based surveillance when feasible. To gauge progress in varicella surveillance, in 2012 CDC and CSTE developed a s

COVID-19 infection exhibits significant age-related differences. In this paper, we consider an infectious disease model with age-structure in susceptibility and evolutionary game and analyze the impact of mandatory and voluntary vaccination strategies on disease progression. We derive the conditions for the existence of equilibria and confirm that the basic reproduction number R0 serves as a threshold parameter that fully determines the dynamical properties of the model. Theoretical analyses indicate that the persistence of COVID-19 is contingent upon the value of the basic reproduction number

During the COVID-19 pandemic, vaccination programmes were shaped by diverse approaches to enforcement. Yet, little is known about how public authority influenced modes of enforcement on the ground or their ramifications for governance and public health more broadly. This article focuses on the Ugandan mandatory COVID-19 vaccination programme in two contrasting geographical and socio-political spaces: rural Dei and peri-urban Gulu. Ethnographic and survey research demonstrated that enforcement occurred in different ways and by diverse public authorities, with ostensibly contrasting results. In

Since 2017, 10 vaccines are compulsory for newborns in Italy and unvaccinated children are not admitted to kindergartens. Recently the Italian Government announced the perspective of reforming the law about the compulsory vaccination. A debated started about the presence, in the same class of the schools, of unvaccinated and immunocompromised children. Cancer is the one of the most important cause of immunodepression among children: after the chemoterapy, there is a period of 13-23 months in which the cancer survivors have to come back at the school and at to the "normal life" (even for psycho
