Coronectomy is a surgical procedure for the treatment of mandibular third molars in close proximity to the mandibular canal. Unfortunately, often the surgical protocol is not described step by step and it is difficult for the clinician to assess the key factors that are important for the success of this procedure. The aim of this paper is to propose and describe a standardized surgical protocol to improve the success of the technique. The treatment approach, for the most common types of third molars impaction is analysed. Each step of the surgical procedure is described in details and a new ty

AIM: Impacted mandibular third molar extraction is a common procedure in oral surgery, not without risk of nerve injury and periodontal defects on the distal aspect of the adjacent second molar. The "orthodontic extraction" is proposed as a method to avoid mandibular nerve injury during the extraction of a deeply embedded third molar and to prevent or limit such periodontal problems.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 28-year-old man presented a deeply impacted left mandibular third molar that required extraction. Radiographs revealed a very slight quantity of bone at the distal surface of the adjacent

It was shown that the crossing of the duct of the submandibular gland and of the lingual nerve appeared constantly in the close vicinity of the upper surface of the posterior portion of the mylohyoid muscle closely to the inner surface of the mandible within the range of the third permanent molar. In the lateral view the nerve/duct crossing is projected on the external mandibular surface distally from the retrotrigonal triangle into the rounded region where the mandibular body and mandibular branch are fused.

INTRODUCTION: Mandibular distraction osteogenesis (MDO) is a critical intervention for addressing severe upper airway obstruction in infants with Robin Sequence (RS). Nonetheless, this procedure carries a risk of facial nerve dysfunction (FND), particularly affecting the marginal mandibular nerve (MMN). Since 2019, our group has prospectively monitored real-time facial nerve conduction using electroneurography (ENoG) during MDO procedures. This pilot study evaluates nerve conduction changes and their potential association with postoperative clinically visible FND.
METHODS: Nine infants with R

PURPOSE: Management of mandibular condylar fracture has invited a great deal of controversy in maxillofacial trauma care. In the orthopaedic literature, surgeons have exhaustively described the use of a 'hematoma block' technique during closed reduction (CR) of the ankle or other long bone fractures. Post-traumatic ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is due to development and progression of the intra-articular hematoma. We improvised their technique for use during CR of mandibular condylar fractures. The desirable effects which can be achieved with our proposed 'novel TMJ hematoma n

Perforation of the lower third molar roots by the inferior alveolar nerve is uncommon and can be difficult to determine by conventional radiographic methods. Presented is a case of perforation that was treated by coronectomy, and showed an unusual complication in that the retained root erupted, moving the canal with it. The radiographic assessment of root perforation and the imaging modalities used to assess such cases are discussed.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this retrospective study was to determine the patient-reported incidence, duration, and perceived deficit in daily activities associated with lingual nerve (LN) sensory changes after bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) of the mandible and to compare them with inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) sensory changes in the same study population.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Questionnaires were mailed to 316 patients who had undergone BSSO procedures between 1980 and 1993. The patients were queried for perceived sensory changes in the distribution of the IAN and LN; duration of the

Distraction osteogenesis is widely used in the treatment of bony deformities and defects. However, injury to the inferior alveolar nerve is a concern. Our aim was to investigate the feasibility of using lentiviral-mediated human nerve growth factor beta (hNGFβ) of the inferior alveolar nerve in mandibular distraction osteogenesis in rabbits. To achieve this, mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) from the bone marrow of rabbit mandibles were isolated and genetically engineered using recombinant lentiviral vector containing hNGFβ. Twenty New Zealand white rabbits underwent mandibular distraction osteogen

Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is a 36-amino-acid peptide residing in sympathetic nerve terminals, originating from the superior cervical ganglion in oral tissues. NPY exerts vasoconstrictor action together with noradrenalin and has been found to inhibit the release of neurotransmitters from primary afferent fibers. During regeneration of the axotomized inferior alveolar nerve (IAN), NPY-immunoreactive (IR) nerve fibers have been shown in the odontoblast layer and dentin, an area normally innervated by afferent nerve fibers. The dynamic shift in neuropeptide expression in the trigeminal ganglion and in

BACKGROUND: Donor nerve options for lower lip reanimation are limited in patients undergoing oncological resection of the facial nerve. The ansa cervicalis nerve (ACN) is an advantageously situated donor with great potential but has not been examined in detail. In the current study, the anatomical technical feasibility of selective ACN to marginal mandibular nerve (MMN) transfer for restoration of lower lip tone and symmetry was explored. A clinical case is presented.
METHODS: Dissections were conducted in 21 hemifaces in non-embalmed human cadavers. The maximal harvestable length of ACN was

Ocular complications are one of the rare side effects that can be seen after a mandibular nerve block and have the most dramatic results. Since the mandibular nerve block is mostly performed by dentists, this complication is mostly seen after an intraoral mandibular nerve block. The mandibular nerve is the third division of the trigeminal nerve. It is the most caudal and lateral part of Gasser's ganglion. It arises from the middle cranial fossa through the foramen ovale. In this region, a block method, which is performed by passing through the coronoid process, has been defined. This block, us

This retrospective study examined the clinical outcomes and complications in 6 cases of compound Meige's syndrome, presenting with blepharospasm and masticatory muscle spasm, following treatment with CT-guided radiofrequency ablation targeting bilateral facial nerves and mandibular branches of the trigeminal nerve. After the operation, the symptoms of eyelid spasm and masticatory muscle spasm resolved, but mild facial paralysis and numbness of mandibular nerve innervation persisted. Follow-up for 4-28 months showed that the symptoms of facial paralysis resolved within 2-5 (3.17 ± 0.94) months

This case report describes the coexistence of a retroesophageal right subclavian artery and left maxillary artery which passed deep to the mandibular nerve. An 88-year-old woman died of acute heart failure, and the postmortem revealed that the right subclavian artery originated from the aortic arch as the last branch at the level of the fourth thoracic vertebra, then passed between the esophagus and the vertebral column. The artery then ascended right superiorly and passed behind the anterior scalene muscle. The right vertebral artery arose from the retroesophageal right subclavian artery and

Introduction Basic knowledge of anatomy is crucial in providing predictable, safe, and efficacious mandibular anesthesia as the mandibular nerve is vulnerable to injury during dental procedures and other surgical manoeuvers. The lack of availability of the appropriate topographical bony landmarks for the location of the branches of this nerve often accounts for iatrogenic injuries and the failure to obtain adequate local anesthaesia. Hence we aimed to describe the topographical landmarks of the branches of the mandibular nerve and their variations in the infratemporal fossa. Methodology In 16
