Unwinding the tangle of adolescent pregnancy and socio-economic functioning: leveraging administrative data from Manitoba, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the relationship between adolescent pregnancy and adult education and employment outcomes is complicated due to the endogeneity of fertility behaviors and socio-economic functioning. Studies exploring adolescent pregnancy have often relied on limited data to measure adolescent pregnancy (i.e. birth during adolescence or self-reports) and lack access to objective measures of school performance during childhood. METHODS: We use rich administrative data from Manitoba, Canada, to assess women's functioning during childhood (including pre-pregnancy academic performance),

Bilateral cryptophthalmos with overlapping features of Manitoba oculo-tricho-anal (MOTA) syndrome and Fraser syndrome 2.

A male baby with bilateral cryptophthalmos without eyebrows, distorted anterior hairline, bifid nasal tip, low-set ears, hypertelorism and low anorectal anomaly who was phenotypically diagnosed with Manitoba oculo-tricho-anal syndrome (mutation in FREM1 gene) had an overlapping genotypic diagnosis of autosomal recessive Fraser syndrome 2 because of the presence of a closely related mutation in FREM2 This heterozygous variant was likely to be sporadic. Another mutation was identified in the CEP85L gene indicating lissencephaly 10. This genetic condition has abnormal gyri pattern in the occiput

ESBL genotypes in fluoroquinolone-resistant and fluoroquinolone-susceptible ESBL-producing Escherichia coli urinary isolates in Manitoba.

OBJECTIVE: Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli are increasingly common in nosocomial and community settings. Furthermore, fluoroquinolone (FQ) and even multidrug resistance (MDR) appear to be associated with certain ESBL genotypes. The purpose of the present study was to determine which ESBL genotypes are associated with FQ and MDR in E coli urinary isolates in Manitoba. METHODS: The authors determined the antimicrobial susceptibility, genetic similarity and ESBL genotype of 27 FQ-resistant and seven FQ-susceptible, ESBL-producing urinary isolates submitted to t

Disruptions in perinatal outcomes across Manitoba, Canada: before and over 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted healthcare service utilisation, but evidence on its impact on perinatal outcomes is conflicting. We investigated the impact of the pandemic public health measures (eg, lockdowns, reduced healthcare access, altered health-seeking behaviour) on preterm birth (PTB), stillbirth, low birth weight (LBW), small for gestational age, caesarean delivery, breastfeeding initiation (BFI) and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admissions. METHODS: Using linked administrative health databases, we conducted a population-based study of pregnancies before (January 2

Prevalence and incidence of mental disorders among First Nations and other individuals using methamphetamine in Manitoba, Canada.

INTRODUCTION: Methamphetamine use can precipitate or exacerbate mental health disorders. In Winnipeg, Canada, First Nations are at particular risk of harms associated with addiction and mental illness. This study examines the prevalence and incidence of comorbid mental health disorders among First Nations and other Winnipeggers using methamphetamine. METHOD: Using population-based administrative health data, we identified First Nations and all other Winnipeg (AOW) residents who had a methamphetamine-related health system contact between 2013 and 2020 (cases) and created control groups that we

Relatively Low Prevalence and Genetic Diversity of Trichinella nativa in Wolverines (Gulo gulo) from Churchill, Manitoba, Canada.

In the Canadian North, trichinellosis is a zoonotic disease that is primarily transmitted by the consumption of improperly cooked walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) and bear (Ursus spp.) meat. Trichinella spp. infections in other wildlife provide information about where transmission occurs, the species present, and the potential risk of transmission to humans. Wolverines (Gulo gulo) can serve as a sentinel species, due to their scavenging behavior, high trophic level, and high larval burden when infected. We determined the prevalence, intensity, and genetic diversity of Trichinella infections in wolve

Real-world predictors of survival in patients with limited-stage small-cell lung cancer in Manitoba, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Although therapy for limited-stage small-cell lung cancer (LS-SCLC) is administered with curative intent, most patients relapse and eventually die of recurrent disease. Chemotherapy (CT) with concurrent radiotherapy (RT) remains the standard of care for LS-SCLC; however, this could evolve in the near future. Therefore, understanding the current prognostic factors associated with survival is essential. OBJECTIVE: This real-world analysis examines factors associated with long-term survival in patients with LS-SCLC treated with CT in Manitoba, Canada. METHODS: A retrospective cohort

Occurrence of the Mosquito Aedes triseriatus (Diptera: Culicidae) Beyond Its Most Northwestern Range Limits in Manitoba, Canada.

Native to the Eastern United States and Eastern Canada, Aedes triseriatus (eastern tree hole mosquito) is an important vector of La Crosse virus and dog heartworm. Although its range has been well characterized in the United States, few studies have surveyed its distribution within Canada. In this study, mosquitoes were collected from a variety of urban and rural communities throughout Manitoba, Canada between the years of 2018 and 2020. Aedes triseriatus was identified and confirmed molecularly to be present in 13 communities. This includes localities that expand the species known distributio

Risk-equivalent T-score adjustment for using lumbar spine trabecular bone score (TBS): the Manitoba BMD registry.

UNLABELLED: Lumbar spine trabecular bone score (TBS) can be used to modify the output from the fracture risk assessment tool, FRAX, to enhance fracture prediction. An alternative approach for using TBS in clinical practice, based upon an adjustment to the bone mineral density (BMD) T-score, may be helpful in regions where intervention guidelines and/or reimbursement are primarily based on BMD T-score. INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study is to develop an approach for using TBS in clinical practice based upon a "risk-equivalent" adjustment to the BMD T-score. METHODS: We identified 45,185 wome

Increasing incidence of anogenital warts with an urban-rural divide among males in Manitoba, Canada, 1990-2011.

BACKGROUND: Anogenital warts (AGW) are caused by the most common sexually transmitted infection, human papillomavirus. The objective of this study was to examine AGW incidence from 1990 to 2011 by sex, age, income quintile, and residential area category (urban/rural). The study period included the initiation of school-based HPV vaccination for girls in the sixth grade, which began in 2008. The data presented in this paper may also be useful for establishing baseline rates of AGW incidence which may be used to evaluate the success of the school-based HPV immunization program. METHODS: Cases of

Heterogeneity in risk of pelvic inflammatory diseases after chlamydia infection: a population-based study in Manitoba, Canada.

BACKGROUND: The association between chlamydia infection and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a key parameter for models evaluating the impact of chlamydia control programs. We quantified this association using a retrospective population-based cohort. METHODS: We used administrative health data sets to construct a retrospective population-based cohort of women and girls aged 12-24 years who were resident in Manitoba, Canada, between 1992 and 1996. We performed survival analysis on a subcohort of individuals who were tested for chlamydia to estimate the risk of PID diagnosed in a primary ca

Preventable feto-infant mortality: application of a conceptual framework for perinatal health surveillance to Manitoba perinatal outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal health surveillance systems have lacked conceptual frameworks to translate data into information for policy and program planning. This paper demonstrates the application of a conceptual framework in the analysis of feto-infant mortality data in the province of Manitoba. METHODS: Fetal and infant deaths were categorized according to a two-dimensional framework of birthweight and age-at-death, and grouped into four broad categories of contributors to perinatal health: Maternal Health, Maternal Care, Newborn Care, and Infant Care. Birth Weight Proportionate Mortality Rates

Government and non-government policy influencers' support for mental health promotion policies in Alberta and Manitoba, Canada.

In Canada, the mental health crisis is an escalating public health concern. Mental health policies, often advocated for and led by government and non-government policy influencers (PIs), are critical in setting the political agenda to improve this issue. Therefore, understanding the views of PIs on mental health-promoting policies may provide insights to policy development priorities. We aim to examine if support for mental health promotion policies varies between Alberta and Manitoba, and between government and non-government PIs. This cross-sectional study was conducted using the 2019 Chroni

Complementary effects of trabecular bone score and hip axis length on fracture risk: the Manitoba BMD Registry.

UNLABELLED: Trabecular bone score (TBS), derived from the spine dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) image, and hip axis length (HAL), derived from the hip DXA image, are bone mineral density (BMD)-independent risk factors for fracture. To date, no studies have directly compared the additive benefits of using TBS and HAL in combination. We found that TBS and HAL made independent contributions to fracture risk, with TBS having a larger benefit for major osteoporotic fractures (MOF) whereas HAL had a larger benefit for hip fractures. AIM: To compare the effects of TBS and HAL on fracture risk

Effectiveness of school-based and high-risk human papillomavirus vaccination programs against cervical dysplasia in Manitoba, Canada.

The effectiveness of a vaccination program is influenced by its design and implementation details and by the target population characteristics. Using routinely collected population-based individual-level data, we assessed the effectiveness (against cervical dysplasia) of Manitoba's quadrivalent human papillomavirus (qHPV) routine school-based vaccination program and a short-lived campaign that targeted women at high-risk of developing cervical cancer. Females ≥9 years old who received the qHPV vaccine in Manitoba (Canada) between September 1, 2006, and March 31, 2013 (N = 31,442) were matched

Interpregnancy Interval and Adverse Perinatal Outcomes: A Record-Linkage Study Using the Manitoba Population Research Data Repository.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between the interpregnancy interval (IPI) and preterm birth, low birth weight, and SGA birth in a developed country with universal health coverage. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of data housed at the Manitoba Centre for Health Policy. All live births in Manitoba hospitals over a 29-year period were identified and consecutive births to the same mother were grouped into sibling pairs to calculate the IPI for the younger siblings. Logistic regression models were fit to examine the association between the IPI and adverse perinatal outcomes, adjus
