An unexpected guest in follicular fluid.

Parasitic infection as the only or concomitant cause of infertility in Caucasian women is rare. A parasitic infection may also present itself quite unexpectedly as a coincidental finding as shown with this case report. Moving microfilariae of Mansonella perstans were found in the aspirated follicular fluid of a patient who underwent in-vitro fertilization (IVF) with embryo transfer because of tubal pathology due to Chlamydia trachomatis. The patient also appeared to have a Schistosoma infection. To our knowledge, the presence of parasites in follicular fluid has never been reported before. We

Polymorphic marker regions support divergence of Mansonella sp. "DEUX" and M. perstans.

BACKGROUND: Though being prevalent worldwide, Mansonella parasites are among the most neglected filarial nematodes. The true prevalence and genetic diversity of this genus have yet to be fully understood. Mansonella sp. "DEUX" is a recently described filarial nematode infecting humans and other primates in Gabon and Cameroon, although its status as distinct species has been controversial. We investigated four different polymorphic regions to further explore the genetic differences between Mansonella species and to support their status as distinct species. METHODS: We screened whole blood samp

Prevalence, probability, and characteristics of malaria and filariasis co-infections: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Malaria and filariasis are significant vector-borne diseases that are co-endemic in the same human populations. This study aims to collate the evidence, probability, and characteristics of malaria and filariasis co-infections in participants among studies reporting the co-occurrence of both diseases. METHODS: We searched for potentially relevant articles reporting the co-occurrence of malaria and filariasis in five electronic databases (Embase, PubMed, Scopus, Medline, and CENTRAL) from inception to May 22, 2022. We estimated the pooled prevalence and probability of malaria and fi

Dirofilaria repens microfilariae from a human node fine-needle aspirate: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Human dirofilariosis is still a little known infection even in endemic areas. Dirofilariosis is zoonotic infection usually abortive in humans; instead, we report a very rare case (the 4th in the world), the first in Italy, in which at least two infective larvae became mature adults that mated and produced active microfilariae even though they did not reach peripheral blood. CASE PRESENTATION: A 30-year-old Italian woman presented with a transient oedematous swelling on the left abdominal wall with a creeping eruption followed by the occurrence of a subcutaneous nodular painless ma

Simuliid blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) and ceratopogonid midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) as vectors of Mansonella ozzardi (Nematoda: Onchocercidae) in northern Argentina.

Mansonella ozzardi, a relatively nonpathogenic filarial parasite of man in Latin America, is transmitted by either ceratopogonid midges or simuliid blackflies. In the only known focus of the disease in north-western Argentina the vectors have never been incriminated. This study investigated the potential vectors of M. ozzardi in this area. The only anthropophilic species of these Diptera families biting man at the time of the investigation were Simulium exiguum, S. dinellii, Culicoides lahillei and C. paraensis. Using experimentally infected flies S. exiguum and both species of Culicoides allo

The prevalence of parasite infestation and house dust mite sensitization in Gabonese schoolchildren.

BACKGROUND: Allergic diseases seem less prevalent in communities in less developed parts of the world, where parasite infections are highly prevalent. Altogether not much is known about the association between chronic infections with tissue and blood-dwelling parasites and atopy. METHODS: In an area in Gabon endemic for blood and tissue parasites, 520 schoolchildren were parasitologically examined and skin prick-tested for a set of common environmental aeroallergens. Levels of allergen-specific IgE and polyclonal IgE were measured. RESULTS: In schoolchildren schistosome and filarial infectio

Trypanosomes and microfilariae in feral owl and squirrel monkeys maintained in research colonies.

A group of 358 owl and squirrel monkeys imported from Colombia, Peru, and Bolivia for the U.S. Agency for International Development Malaria Vaccine Development Program was examined for trypanosomes and microfilariae. Trypanosoma rangeli, isolated by hemoculture from Aotus nancymai, Saimiri b. boliviensis, and S. b. peruviensis, accounted for 76.6% of all trypanosome infections. Trypanosoma cruzi was isolated from 25 of 194 S. b. boliviensis, including two mixed infections with T. rangeli. Identifications of trypanosomes were confirmed by blinded tests with a panel of five rRNA probes on a subs

Wolbachia bacteria in Mansonella perstans isolates from patients infected in different geographical areas: a pilot study from the ESCMID Study Group for Clinical Parasitology.

BACKGROUND: Mansonella perstans is a vector-borne filarial parasite widely endemic in sub-Saharan Africa, with sporadic cases in Latin America. Infection is often overlooked; treatment is not standardized, and effectiveness of common regimes is difficult to ascertain. Anti-Wolbachia macrofilaricidal treatment with doxycycline has been applied, but there are scant and contrasting reports about the presence of Wolbachia in M. perstans isolates from different geographical locations. Taking advantage of a network of European centres expert in traveller and migrant health, we aimed to expand the kn

Effects of thiabendazole in Mansonella perstans filariasis.

Mansonella perstans is a human filarial parasite distributed across the center of Africa and equatorial America. Although M. perstans infection is asymptomatic in most individuals, a variety of symptoms have been described, including angioedema, pruritus, fever, ocular involvement, and serous cavities pain. Eosinophilia is found in many cases. Treatment with diethyl-carbamazine or mebendazole is often ineffective. We present a study on the effects of thiabendazole in the treatment of symptomatic M. perstans filariasis. Twenty-five patients were treated with thiabendazole at a single dose of 50

The occurrence of loiasis, mansonellosis and wuchereriasis in the Jarawa River Valley, central Nigeria.

In a study to assess the status of filariasis in the Jarawa River Valley of the savanna area of Nigeria, 940 self-selected residents from 10 villages were examined between March 1984 and April 1987. Overall results showed 105 (11.2%) had microfilaraemia and/or clinical signs of filariasis. Sixty-four (6.8%) and 20 (2.1%) persons, respectively, were infected with Mansonella perstans and Loa loa microfilariae (mff). Four of the 28 villagers examined had Wuchereria bancrofti mff in their night blood samples whereas 17 (1.8%) of all residents surveyed had clinical filariasis mainly due to lympho-o

Hypogonadism and ecdysteroid production in Loa loa and Mansonella perstans filariasis.

Possible endocrinological repercussions of infection with Loa loa and Mansonella perstans filariae were studied in Gabonese subjects. Microfilaremic males were compared with amicrofilaremic controls. In the infected group 13/105 subjects (12%) presented only abnormally low serum levels of testosterone (less than 4 ng/ml), 25/105 (24%) only abnormally high serum levels of gonadotrophins, FSH (greater than 15 mIU/ml) and LH (greater than 20 mIU/ml), and 22/105 (21%) presented anomalies in both testosterone and gonadotrophin levels. One out of 68 control subjects had 3.6 ng/ml seric testosterone

The status of human filariasis in relation to clinical signs in endemic areas of the Niger Delta.

A study was carried out in selected parts of the Niger Delta Basin on human filariasis and its relationship to clinical signs. One hundred and seventy-six (13.0%) of 1351 individuals examined were infected with microfilaria. Forty-six percent of microfilaria positive cases had M. perstans; 25.6% had W. bancrofti, 19.3% had L. loa, and 9.0% had O. volvulus. The prevalence of filariasis increased with age. Microfilarial density was generally low, 28.4% of infected individuals had counts of 50-100 microfilaria per 20 mm3 blood, 12.5% had counts less than five microfilaria per 20 mm3 blood. Onchoc

Mansonella perstans microfilaremic individuals are characterized by enhanced type 2 helper T and regulatory T and B cell subsets and dampened systemic innate and adaptive immune responses.

The filarial nematode Mansonella perstans is endemic throughout Africa, northern South America and the Caribbean. Interestingly, M. perstans-infected individuals present no distinct clinical picture associated with certain pathology. Due to its relatively silent nature, research on this tropical disease has been neglected, especially M. perstans-driven immune responses. A hindrance in obtaining data on M. perstans-specific responses has been the inability to obtain adult worms since their habitats in serous cavities are difficult to access. Thus, in this study, for the first time, we used Mans

At homeostasis filarial infections have expanded adaptive T regulatory but not classical Th2 cells.

Despite the well-documented immune suppression associated with human helminth infections, studies characterizing the immune response at the single-cell level are scanty. We used multiparameter flow cytometry to characterize the type of effector (Th1, Th2, and Th17) and regulatory (natural T regulatory cells [nTregs] and adaptive Treg cells [aTreg/type 1 regulatory cells (Tr1s)]) CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells in filaria-infected (Fil(+)) and -uninfected (Fil(-)) individuals at homeostasis (in the absence of stimulation). Short communication: impact of long-term (14 years) bi-annual ivermectin treatment on Wuchereria bancrofti microfilaraemia.

Ivermectin has been and continues to be extensively used to control onchocerciasis in areas of hyper and mesoendemicity within the African Programme of Onchocerciasis Control. As programmes to eliminate lymphatic filariasis (LF) caused by Wuchereria bancrofti expand, areas of coendemicity with onchocerciasis will be incorporated into LF programmes. This study reports that in villages which were hyperendemic for onchocerciasis after some 14 years of treatment with ivermectin, no W. bancrofti could be detected in a population of 1210 individuals whilst in adjacent villages a prevalence of around
