Environmental monitoring study of selected veterinary antibiotics in animal manure and soils in Austria.

LC-MS/MS was used for determination of selected tetracyclines, sulfonamides, trimethoprim, and fluoroquinolones in manure samples of pig, chicken and turkey, as well as arable soils fertilized with manure. Recoveries from spiked samples ranged from 61 to 105%. Method quantification limits were set to 100 microg/kg for all substances. Analysis of 30 pig manure, 20 chicken and turkey dung, and 30 lyophilized soil samples taken in Austria revealed that in pig manure up to 46 mg/kg chlortetracycline, 29 mg/kg oxytetracycline and 23 mg/kg tetracycline could be detected. Effect of green manure on the incidence of cyanogenic Pseudomonas strains in hop garden soils.

Incidence of cyanogenic Pseudomonas strains in hop garden soils in relation to the kind of fertilization was studied. Incidence differed with respect to the fertilization treatment and the age of the plantation. Amendment of soil with rye and with white mustard as green manures limited the number of cyanogenic Pseudomonas strains relative to farmyard manures and NPK fertilization. Among all fertilization treatments, cyanogenic Pseudomonas spp. strains had lowest populations in soils amended with white mustard.

Manure inoculation shapes arsenic speciation and phase partitioning during biodegradation of Pteris vittata biomass.

Arsenic-hyperaccumulator P. vittata has been used in phytoremediation of As-contaminated soil, yet As speciation and phase partitioning among solid, liquid and gas during degradation of As-rich biomass remain poorly understood. Here, P. vittata biomass containing 125 mg kg-1 As was degraded in a bioreactor for 5 weeks, with pig manure as a microbial inoculant. Manure addition enhanced biomass reduction by 57% from 47% in the control. While initially As was in the solid phase, estimated As was accumulated primarily in the gas and solid phases in the control after degradation. Manure addition ma

Animal type outweighs growth stage in shaping the active antibiotic resistome in livestock manure.

Animal manure is a major reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), yet the factors governing their composition and activity remain insufficiently understood. In this study, metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, and quantitative PCR (qPCR) were integrated to characterize microbial communities and resistome profiles in manure from five animal types across multiple growth stages. Results demonstrated that animal type was the dominant factor shaping both microbial community structure and ARG composition at DNA and RNA levels, whereas growth stage did not significantly influence overall communi

Antibiotic residues in cattle manure increase greenhouse gas emissions during solid storage in Kenya.

The increasing use of antibiotics in livestock farming raises concerns about environmental impacts. This study examined the effects of three commonly used veterinary antibiotics - Tylosin, Enrofloxacin, and Oxytetracycline - on manure greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and fertilizer quality during solid manure storage. Aliquots of fresh cattle manure (10 kg) were either spiked with high or low concentrations of each antibiotic, or left untreated as Control, then incubated in open buckets for 110 days to simulate manure heaping. Emissions of CO2, CH4, and N2O were measured using a static chamber w

Persulfate-based radical-induced oxidative humification of chicken manure and simultaneous removal of pollutants.

Livestock manure is a valuable organic fertilizer, however, current treatment methods encounter challenges such as slow biological fermentation and high-cost abiotic processes. Hence, this study developed an ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)-enhanced Fe0 activated persulfate (PS) technology aimed at accelerating the humification of manure. The addition of 2 mL of 0.75 M PS, 0.6 g of Fe0 and 0.3 g of EDTA to 10 g of chicken manure achieved substantial humification within 40 min, with fulvic acid and humic acid contents reaching 5.26 % and 8 %, respectively. FTIR and XPS revealed that the t

Humic acid-anchored hydrochar for enhancing methane production in anaerobic digestion of cow manure.

This study assesses the effectiveness of two hydrochar variants-humic acid-anchored hydrochar and sodium hydroxide-modified hydrochar-in enhancing biogas production from high-solids anaerobic digestion of cow manure. The purpose of humic acid modification is that its abundant oxygen-containing functional groups promote direct interspecies electron transfer and improve microbial efficiency in anaerobic digestion. Humic acid-anchored hydrochar was prepared by anchoring humic acid to hydrochar. To further optimize the electron transfer capacity and structural properties of the hydrochar, the humi

Antibiotic resistance partitioning during on-farm manure separation and high temperature rotary drum composting.

Manure application as fertilizer can increase environmental exposure risk, as antibiotics, antibiotic resistance bacteria (ARB), and antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) can be transmitted to agricultural fields, and adjacent natural systems. Understanding how specific antibiotics and ARGs respond within different manure fractions during on-farm management is limited. The study objective was to conduct a mass flow analysis determining the fate of antibiotic resistance factors (antibiotics, ARGs, and ARB) through solid-liquid separation, with the solid fraction continuing through a bedding recover

Soil antibiotic resistance genes accumulate at different rates over four decades of manure application.

Manure can be a source of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) that enter the soil. However, previous studies assessing ARG persistence in soil have generally lacked continuity over sampling times, consistency of location, and assessing the impact of discontinuing manure application. We evaluated both short- and long-term ARG accumulation dynamics in soil with a 40-year known history of manure use. Manure application caused a greater abundance of tetracycline, macrolide, and sulfonamide ARGs in the soil. There was an initial spike in ARG abundance resulting from manure bacteria harboring ARGs be

A review targeting veterinary antibiotics removal from livestock manure management systems and future outlook.

Veterinary antibiotics (VAs) contamination has been considered as a worldwide environmental and health concern in recent decades. This paper reviewed the variability of contents of VAs and their release from the animal breeding industry into the surrounding environment along with the performance of the manure treatment technologies. The data collected revealed that VAs were mostly excreted in animal feces and observed in manure, soil, water, and sediment. The findings illustrate the disparity of VAs in excretion rates, consumption, and their residues in the environment with relatively high dis

Characterization of organic matter degradation during composting of manure-straw mixtures spiked with tetracyclines.

The objective of this study was to investigate humification and mineralization of manure-straw mixtures contaminated by tetracyclines during composting. Hen manure, pig manure and rice straw were used as the raw materials. The manure-straw mixtures were spiked with tetracycline, chlortetracycline, and oxytetracycline at the concentration of 60 mg/kg dry matter. The results show that tetracyclines had no obvious influence on the composting process and more than 93% of the tetracyclines was decreased during a 45-day composting. The Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra indicated that easily

Physical and chemical processes for removing suspended solids and phosphorus from liquid swine manure.

A physical/chemical treatment train, that included 24-hour preliminary settling followed by coagulation/flocculation and sedimentation, was tested at a laboratory bench scale to treat liquid swine manure for the removal of total suspended solids (TSS) and total phosphorus (TP). Preliminary (i.e., natural) settling time had an effect on TSS removal within only the first 24 hours. TSS removal efficiency reached 75% (TSS concentration was reduced from 5,800 to 1,450 mg 1(-1)) after 24 hours of preliminary settling. Also, as a result of the 24-hour preliminary settling, TP concentration was reduce

Responses of biogeochemical cycles to polyethylene microplastics exposure during aerobic fermentation of dairy manure.

Microplastics (MPs) are emerging contaminants that may disrupt Earth's biogeochemical cycles of elements, yet their effects on multi-element cycling during aerobic fermentation of livestock manure remain unclear. This study evaluated how polyethylene (PE) MPs and fermentation strategy affected multi-element functional potential during aerobic fermentation of dairy manure solids by integrating metagenomic functional profiling, co-occurrence networks, and other complementary approaches. Fermentation time dominated functional gene succession, with treatment separation becoming most evident on day

Nutrient data from US manure systems from 2012 to 2022: Spatial and temporal trends.

Most published manure nutrient concentration approximations (book values) used today were derived from manure data prior to 2003 and do not reflect potential differences across US regions. Using ManureDB data, the University of Minnesota database with manure total nitrogen (N), ammonium-N (NH4-N), phosphorus (P2O5), and potassium (K2O) data spanning from 1998 to 2023 from 15 laboratories across the United States, we analyzed nutrient data from 2012 to 2022. Eight common US poultry and livestock manure types were used in this analysis, which showed that 91% of the slurry/liquid and 66% of the s

Assessing green manure impact on wheat productivity through Bayesian analysis of yield monitor data.

Agronomy research traditionally relies on small, controlled trial plots, which may not accurately represent the complexities and variabilities found in larger, real-world settings. To address this gap, we introduce a Bayesian methodology for the analysis of yield monitor data, systematically collected across extensive agricultural landscapes during the 2020/21 and 2021/22 growing seasons. Utilizing advanced yield monitoring equipment, our method provides a detailed examination of the effects of green manure on wheat yields in a real-world context. The results from this comprehensive analysis r
