In the wake of the quest to break the 2-h marathon barrier, carbon-fiber plates have become commonplace in marathon racing shoes. Despite the controversy surrounding this shoe technology, studies on the effects of increased longitudinal bending stiffness on running economy report mixed results. Here, we provide a comprehensive review of the current literature on midsole bending stiffness and carbon-fiber plates in distance running shoes, focusing on how longitudinal bending stiffness affects running energetics and lower limb mechanics. The current literature reports changes in running economy

Overuse-induced injuries have been proposed as a predisposing factor for Achilles tendon (AT) ruptures. If tendons can be overloaded, their mechanical properties should change during exercise. Because there data are lacking on the effects of a single bout of long-lasting exercise on AT mechanical properties, the present study measured AT stiffness before and after a marathon. AT stiffness was determined as the slope of the force-elongation curve between 10 and 80% of maximum voluntary force. AT force-elongation characteristics were measured in an ankle dynamometer using simultaneous motion-cap

The effects of a strenuous marathon run of 42.2 kilometers on the presence of prostaglandins in blood was investigated in 24 healthy males and females. Testosterone, FSH, LH, epinephrine, norepinephrine, dopamine, T4 and T3 were also measured. With the exercise of the marathon run, a significant elevation of plasma PGE2, PGF2 alpha and 6 keto PGF1 alpha was observed in the runners following the race. Significant increases were also noted in blood catecholamine, dopamine and testosterone levels while a significant decline in the gonadotropins, FSH and LH was observed. No changes in thyroxine or

Adaptogens modulate intracellular signaling and increase expression of heat shock protein 72 (HSP72). Rhodiola rosea (RR) is a medicinal plant with demonstrated adaptogenic properties. The purpose of this study was to measure the influence of RR supplementation on exercise-induced muscle damage, delayed onset of muscle soreness (DOMS), plasma cytokines, and extracellular HSP72 (eHSP72) in experienced runners completing a marathon. Experienced marathon runners were randomized to RR (n=24, 6 female, 18 male) or placebo (n=24, 7 female, 17 male) groups and under double-blinded conditions ingested

Training intensity distribution significantly influences marathon performance, yet individual variability in training responses remains poorly understood. This study compared pyramidal and polarized training methodologies using machine learning to identify optimal personalization strategies. A total of 120 recreational marathon runners were randomly assigned to 16-week pyramidal (n = 60) or polarized (n = 60) training interventions. Machine learning models analyzed individual responses using consumer-grade monitoring technology to predict optimal training methodology based on athlete character

CASE: A 49-year-old man, who had started jogging 3 months before his first participation in a marathon race, presented with acute pain and difficulty walking that began during the marathon race. Tumors and bone metabolism factors were ruled out by blood examination and various imaging findings. Isolated iliac wing fatigue fracture was diagnosed and treated with conservative therapy.
CONCLUSION: This is the first English-literature report we know of an isolated iliac wing stress fracture in a male marathon runner without underlying disease. Our study highlights the importance of considering th

Participation in ultramarathons continues to grow, especially among older individuals and among younger runners who may have less running and wilderness experience than many past participants. While ultramarathons tend to have relatively few serious medical issues, adverse medical incidents do occur. These factors make it increasingly important that appropriate safety precautions and medical support are defined and implemented at these events to enhance the safety of participants, spectators, and volunteers. This document establishes the minimum recommended level of medical support that should

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate tibiotalar cartilage changes in amateur marathon runners pre- and post-marathon using 3D ultrashort echo time (UTE) bi-component analysis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Amateur runners were prospectively enrolled and underwent ankle MRI at three time points: pre-marathon, 2 days post-marathon, and 4 weeks post-marathon. UTE component analysis was used to obtain single-component values (T2*M), and bi-component values (short (T2*S) and long T2* component values (T2*L), and short T2* fractions) of cartilage. Sagittal images were analyzed by segmenting tibial and talus cartilage i

Background: With the growing popularity of amateur endurance sports, including marathon running, it is crucial to recognize transient myocardial changes induced by prolonged physical exertion and to evaluate potential predictors of cardiac fatigue. Methods: A total of 105 runners participating in the 2023 Silesia Marathon (half-marathon, marathon, and ultramarathon) were studied. Transthoracic echocardiography was performed at baseline (1-4 days pre-race), immediately after the race, and 14 days later. Parameters of left and right ventricular function were assessed, including left ventricular

INTRODUCTION: Although pacing is a variable that affects marathon running performance, there is a lack of studies that assessed whether it can improve performance prediction. The aim was to calculate a linear regression model with data such as the half marathon race time, age category, sex and pacing range (difference between the maximum and minimum relative speed of the half marathon) to predict the marathon time. Moreover, the accuracy of the prediction equation obtained was compared with the Daniels' VDOT.
METHODS: A total of 8.261 runners, who participated in both events (Valencia Half Ma

BACKGROUND: Marathon running has evolved into a global phenomenon, with rising participation across age and experience groups. Training for a marathon requires adherence to well-established principles involving pacing, training volume, and periodization. With the increasing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into healthcare and fitness, it remains unclear whether AI can reliably prescribe evidence-based training programs for such demanding endurance events.

Since cheering has not yet been systematically investigated from a phonetic perspective, this study explores its acoustic characteristics by focusing on a specific type of cheering: inciting calls directed at individual runners during long-distance races, using their names. We investigate its prosodic realization through an experimental approach. We present findings from a production study with recordings in the lab comparing cheering utterances to neutral speech. 30 native speakers of German were asked to cheer on an individual marathon runner in a sporting event shown in a video by calling o

Obesity is characterized by specific changes in the composition of the gut microbiota (GM). Exercise can contribute to the modulation of GM. This is the first case study to analyze the composition and metabolism of the GM of an obese runner in a single-stage mountain ultramarathon (MUM) with a mileage of 217 km. Fecal samples were collected 7 days before the race (T0), 15 min after the end of the race (T1), and 7 days after the end of the race (T2). GM composition was analyzed by real-time PCR and shotgun sequencing. We observed a decrease in Bacillota/Bacteroidota ratio and α-diversity after

Leveraging sporting events to drive urban development has been proven effective. However, the influence of city image on the perceived experience of branded marathon events, as an embodied practice within urban spaces, remains underexplored. This study considers marathon races as significant activities integrated into urban environments and specifically investigates how city image affects the perceived experience of branded marathon events. The objective of the research is to evaluate how city functions, governance, characteristics, and event culture and services influence marathon participant
