A rare case of tuberculosis of axillary lymph nodes occurring with primary breast cancer is presented. A 78-year-old woman with no history of pulmonary tuberculosis was admitted to our hospital to undergo examination for a lump in her right breast. The tumor was in the upper outer quadrant of the right breast. On palpation, the tumor was 1.2 cm in diameter and axillary lymph node swelling was noted. Mammography disclosed a spiculated mass and swelling and calcification of the axillary lymph nodes. Sonography showed an irregular hypoechoic mass in the right breast and lymph node swelling in the

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is an aggressive malignancy frequently associated with paraneoplastic syndromes, including the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH). These syndromes usually happen prior to tumor detection and can lead to delayed diagnosis, especially when initial imaging is inconclusive. Here we report the case of a 56-year-old female with a history of chronic tobacco and alcohol use who presented to the emergency department multiple times over two months with symptoms of fatigue, dizziness, and hyponatremia. After several hospital encounters and repea

A 17-year-old man with Von Recklinghausen's disease was admitted to our hospital because of progressive dyspnea on exertion. A chest X-ray film showed a massive left pleural effusion. Thoracentesis revealed dark blood. Hemothorax was diagnosed, and digital subtraction angiography (DSA) was done. DSA revealed a large mass that was supplied with blood via the inferior phrenic artery, but revealed no active bleeding. An intercostal tube was inserted and 1700 ml of dark blood was drained. A chest X-ray film taken after drainage revealed a giant mass showing an extra-pleural sign in the left lung f

A 38-year-old man without any symptoms was admitted to our institution because of an abnormal shadow found incidentally on a chest X-ray. Chest computed tomography showed a round mass in the lingular segment of the left upper lobe. Lingular segmentectomy was performed, and the histopathological diagnosis was intrapulmonary schwannoma. Immunohistochemical staining revealed a positive result for S-100 protein and negative results for CD34 and desmin. We report this case of intrapulmonary schwannoma, which is extremely rare.

A 49-year-old man presented with intermittent hemoptysis from a traumatic pulmonary artery pseudoaneurysm 30 years following a thoracic gunshot wound. The patient was asymptomatic for 28.5 years, when he began experiencing recurrent hemoptysis, chest pain, and a cough. A left lower lobe mass on chest x-ray film was investigated with contrast-enhanced computed tomography and pulmonary angiogram confirming a 1.5-cm pseudoaneurysm. Intraluminal coil embolization was attempted, but a left lower lobectomy was ultimately necessary to treat persistent hemoptysis.

Hydatid cystic disease is still a health problem in Morocco. Mediastinal localization is very rare. We report the case of a 24-year-old man who presented with right chest pain and dyspnea. Chest X-Ray and computed tomography showed a mediastinal mass. The diagnosis was confirmed perioperatively by macroscopic and histologic investigations. Resection of the cyst was performed, and a small part intimately adherent to the inferior vena cava and oesophagus was left in place. There were no complications or recurrence.

BACKGROUND: Mediastinal teratoma is an uncommon disease, nevertheless they represent the most common mediastinal germ cell tumors. It may grow silently for several years and remain undiagnosed until the occurrence of a complication.
AIM: The main aim of this article is to illustrate the silent evolution of an anterior mediastinal teratoma for over 70 years without presenting any notable complications.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 70-year-old female, treated for hypertension referred to our department for managing a voluminous mediastinal mass, discovered fortuitously by a gene

A 59-year-old male, whose chest X-ray showed an abnormal shadow, visited us for further study. Laboratory examination showed the elevated level for both carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in serum, and the chest X-ray and computed tomography showed an anterior mediastinal mass. Under a diagnosis of thymic malignancy, extended thymectomy with combined resection of the pleura and pericardium was performed. Histopathological findings showed a well-differentiated adenocarcinoma of the thymus, in which CA19-9 and CEA were positive immuno-histochemically. The level

Growth of Aspergillus was observed in the necrotic tissue of non-cavitary lung cancer. Case 1 was a 60-year-old male complaining of cough and fever and was found to have left lower lobe atelectasis on chest X-ray. Bronchoscopic examination showed the yellow soft lesion occluding the left upper and lower lobe bronchus. Specimen from the lesion demonstrated adenocarcinoma and hyphae of Aspergillus in the necrotic tumor. Case 2 was a 53-year-old male who was found to have a left upper lobe mass by chest X-ray screening. Bronchoscopic examination showed the yellow polypoid lesion occluding the lef

A male farmer referred for fever, cough and haemoptysis, presented, at bronchoscopic examination, a large mass occluding the middle lobe bronchus. No lung involvement was visible on chest X-ray. Histological examination showed an actinomycotic granule in the bronchial submucosa. The histological findings indicate that aspiration of contaminated material from the upper alimentary tract may have caused the disease.

Missed lung cancer is a source of concern among radiologists and an important medicolegal challenge. In 90% of the cases, errors in diagnosis of lung cancer occur on chest radiographs. It may be challenging for radiologists to distinguish a lung lesion from bones, pulmonary vessels, mediastinal structures, and other complex anatomical structures on chest radiographs. Nevertheless, lung cancer can also be overlooked on computed tomography (CT) scans, regardless of the context, either if a clinical or radiologic suspect exists or for other reasons. Awareness of the possible causes of overlooking

Ectopic localizations of the thymus have been reported in a variety of unusual sites, but not on the surface of the skin of the neck. As one can see in our case, the left neck mass (1.5 x 2 x 0.5 cm) and the right neck mass (4 x 4 x 0.5 cm), when added together in weight, also equal the total weight of the thymus at birth. Also, not being able to encounter the "sail sign" of the thymus gland on the chest x-ray proved to us that no other thymus gland was present. Because of these unusual findings, prior to excision of any congenital lesion in the neck, a biopsy should be done, and only after th

A 52-year-old man was admitted to our hospital on October, 1997 with complains of left anterior chest pain. A chest X-ray and computed tomography on admission showed evidence of a mass in the left anterior mediastinum. The patient was treated with combination chemotherapy [cisplatin (CDDP), etoposide (VP-16)] and radiation therapy (2 gray x 25 days), preoperatively. Median sternotomy revealed a tumor invading into the left anterior chest wall, the pericardium, and partial pleura. The tumor was extirpated with combined resection of invaded organs. Microscopically and immunohistochemically, the

Over 40,000 residents (less than or equal to 40 years of age) in a city (Sendai; the city group), a town (Shiroishi; the town group) and two villages (Wakuya and Tajiri; the village group) in Miyagi prefecture in north-eastern Japan responded in a questionnaire survey on their attitude towards mass health examinations (i.e., whether they underwent in the previous year and if so where) on 4 items of blood pressure measurement, chest x-ray examination and screening tests for stomach and cervical cancer. The coverage rates were about 70% on an average both for blood pressure measurement and for c

A case of chondrosarcoma of the thoracic vertebra in a 47-year-old female is described. Chest X-ray, CT and MRI disclosed an abnormal mass lesion in the posterior mediastinum. The lesion was surgically removed through right thoracotomy. The operative findings revealed that the lesion, hard and measuring 6.5 x 4.5 x 4.5 cm in diameter, was originated from the 7th and 8th thoracic vertebra. The lesion was histopathologically diagnosed chondrosarcoma. The chondrosarcoma arising from the thoracic vertebra is very rare, and only 10 cases have hitherto been reported in the Japanese literature.

A 67-year-old man had actinomycosis with primary involvement of the abdominal wall, which is rare. His chief complaint was an enlarging, hard, nontender mass in the right lower quadrant of the abdomen. The mass had been present for two weeks and measured 11 X 8 cm. An x-ray film of the chest, barium studies of the gastrointestinal tract, and an intravenous pyelogram showed no abnormalities. Excisional biopsy was performed, and the findings were consistent with Actinomyces israelii infection. There was no evidence of underlying bowel disease or break in continuity of the mucous membrane. The pa

The prognostic importance of mediastinal affection and its extent was analyzed in a group of 220 patients with Hodgkin's disease in all clinical stages. The results of the total survival period in mediastinal patients are significantly worse, as compared with patients without primary affection of the mediastinum at all evaluated time intervals: in the 5th year after onset of treatment 79% vs. 95% in the 10th, 15th and 20th year 67% vs 86%, 63% vs. 86% and 56% vs. 86%. The survival of patients without a mediastinal tumour does not change after a 10-year period of follow-up, in case of a tumour

Although intraperitoneal splenosis is a very common disease, intrathoracic splenosis is very rare. It is generally an asymptomatic disease that occurs after thoracoabdominal trauma, and is diagnosed as an intrathoracic mass that leads to unnecessary investigations to be differentiated from other benign or malignant lesions of the chest. We present a patient with an intrathoracic mass which was preoperatively diagnosed as a diaphragmatic hernia on chest X-ray and magnetic resonance imaging. We have intraoperatively recognized that many pieces of splenic tissue have been herniated through a diap

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) systems for automated chest x-ray interpretation hold promise for standardising reporting and reducing delays in health systems with shortages of trained radiologists. Yet, there are few freely accessible AI systems trained on large datasets for practitioners to use with their own data with a view to accelerating clinical deployment of AI systems in radiology. We aimed to contribute an AI system for comprehensive chest x-ray abnormality detection.
METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we developed open-source neural networks, X-Raydar and X-Rayd

A patient with pulmonary actinomycosis who unexpectedly showed focal uptake of technetium-99m-hexakis-2-methoxy isobutyl isonitrile and thallium-201 is presented. The appearance of the lesion on the chest radiograph and x-ray CT scan resembled a mediastinal tumor. The diagnosis of pulmonary actinomycosis was achieved by histopathologic examination of the surgically removed mass.
