The aim of this study was to characterize the adverse events of attenuated measles vaccine in mainland China. We carried out prospective follow-up of adverse events after mass measles immunization practices, categorizing them into two groups: allergic reactions and serious adverse events. The incidence of anaphylaxis reaction was estimated to be 6.5 per million for attenuated measles vaccine. Among 14.3 million vaccination practices, 1 case each of acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) and 28 cases of Henoch-Schonlein purpura (HSP) were repor

Mass vaccination with reduced dose 1/50 Rev 1 strain live vaccine (1-2 10(9) colony forming units), administered subcutaneously, over a four and a half year period reduced the prevalence of Brucella melitensis in Kuwait's small ruminant population from 5.8% in 1993 to 2.02% in 1997. Serological test results using the Rose Bengal Plate Test, Rivanol Agglutination Test and Complement Fixation showed no evidence of persistence of positive serology in animals nine or more months after vaccination. Questionnaires and post-vaccination flock inspections found that the effects on gestation (abortions)

UNLABELLED: SARS-CoV-2 virulence is known to increase with lowering of environmental temperature and solar ultraviolet radiation; therefore, we have focused our real-world nationwide study concerning with COVID-19 trend and dynamics on the coldest seasons of the year in Italy, the Western country hardest hit at the onset of the pandemic, comparing the autumn-winter of 2020 (before mass vaccination but when the emergency machinery was fully operative in terms of tracing and swabs) with the autumn-winter of 2021 (after mass vaccination), and analyzing the mortality burden by age groups and life

Lima, Peru, has not had a case of canine rabies since 1999. However, Lima remains at risk of rabies reintroduction due to the free movement of dogs from nearby rabies-endemic areas. In Latin America, rabies vaccination campaigns must reach 80% of dogs to halt transmission, but estimates of vaccine coverage are often unavailable, unreliable, or inaccurate. Quantifying virus neutralizing antibodies (VNA) allows monitoring of the immunological status of the canine population, evaluation of the degree of humoral protection to the virus, and assessing, partially, the population response to vaccinat

Pneumonia caused by Mycoplasma (M.) hyopneumoniae is one of the major respiratory diseases in swine production. Commercial vaccines for M. hyopneumoniae are widely used in weaned piglets to reduce lung lesions and clinical signs in the downstream flow; however, no information regarding the effect of mass immunization of the breeding herd is available. The aim of this work was to evaluate a mass vaccination protocol for M. hyopneumoniae on the humoral response of sows and their offspring 24 h post-partum (trial registration number 40156). A total of 52 sows from two different farms (13 primipar

In this study, we describe a contained measles outbreak in a London prison, the second such outbreak in a custodial setting. Once vaccination commenced, just under a third of eligible prisoners were immunised due to a low uptake of the vaccine. We conducted a root-cause analysis in order to identify factors which may have prevented or altered the course of the outbreak. Our analysis revealed that many of the factors identified are those that cannot be easily changed. It is unlikely that mass vaccination at the time, even in the absence of some of the more easily rectifiable issues, could have

Mass vaccination campaigns with the oral poliovirus vaccine targeting children aged <5 years are a critical component of the global poliomyelitis eradication effort. Monitoring the coverage of these campaigns is essential to allow corrective action, but current approaches are limited by their cross-sectional nature, nonrandom sampling, reporting biases, and accessibility issues. We describe a new Bayesian framework using data augmentation and Markov chain Monte Carlo methods to estimate variation in vaccination coverage from children's vaccination histories investigated during surveillance for

Chile was the first country in the Americas to conduct surveillance for congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) as part of screening for common causes of congenital birth defects (referred to as TORCH pathogens). The surveillance system identified 15 CRS cases in 1999 and 2 cases in 2000, and it has identified no CRS cases since 2000. CRS surveillance in Chile meets recommended surveillance standards and may serve as a model for CRS surveillance in other countries.

An outbreak of 12 cases of meningitis, 11 caused by Neisseria meningitidis serogroup C, occurred at Doomadgee from September, 1990, to April, 1991. The incidence of meningitis was 17.55/10(3) person-years. Only children aged 1-10 years were affected. In October, 1990, or shortly thereafter, 473/509 children aged between 1 and 15 years inclusive had one dose of Mencevax AC. From the time of vaccination until April, 1991, a further eight cases occurred, six in vaccinated children. Vaccine efficacy in 1-15 year olds was calculated as 77%. Despite this, in April, 1991, the prevalence of antibody t

BACKGROUND: As the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination campaign unfolds, it is important to continuously assess the real-world safety of Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-authorized vaccines. Curation of large-scale electronic health records (EHRs) enables near-real-time safety evaluations that were not previously possible.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, we deployed deep neural networks over a large EHR system to automatically curate the adverse effects mentioned by physicians in over 1.2 million clinical notes between December 1, 2020 and April 20, 2021. We compared notes

Because of the advent of a new influenza A H1N1 strain, many countries have begun mass immunisation programmes. Awareness of the background rates of possible adverse events will be a crucial part of assessment of possible vaccine safety concerns and will help to separate legitimate safety concerns from events that are temporally associated with but not caused by vaccination. We identified background rates of selected medical events for several countries. Rates of disease events varied by age, sex, method of ascertainment, and geography. Highly visible health conditions, such as Guillain-Barré

Data from routine surveillance during two mass immunisation campaigns (MIC) with Measles-mumps-rubella (MMR)vaccine using Leningrad-Zagreb mumps strain in two states in Brazil were analysed to estimate the risk of vaccine-related meningitis and mumps. Increase in the incidence of the two diseases was observed in both states, 3 weeks after the vaccination campaigns. The estimated number of doses applied per one case of vaccine-related meningitis ranged from 6199 (95% CI: 4854-8058) to 19,247 (95% CI: 12,648-29,513) depending on the diagnostic criteria used and state. It was 300 doses (95% CI: 2

BACKGROUND: Approximately 60,000 people die from rabies annually, mostly in Africa and Asia. Mass dog vaccination is critical for elimination. Herd immunity has been calculated to be attained when >40% (critical threshold) of dogs are vaccinated. A common delivery method implemented in Tanzania and other countries typically involves non-local teams travelling to villages implementing dog vaccination annually through static-point clinics using cold chain stored vaccines (Team-based delivery). Determination that a canine rabies vaccine is thermotolerant enables novel Community-based dog vaccinat

INTRODUCTION: Progress in malaria control has stalled since 2015, highlighting the need for new control tools. The R21/Matrix-M (R21) malaria vaccine, a pre-erythrocytic vaccine recently approved by WHO for small children, may be one of these tools. This trial aims to assess whether seasonal mass vaccination with R21 reduces malaria transmission in The Gambia and Burkina Faso, two countries at the extreme of the transmission spectrum.
METHODS: This is a multi-centre open cluster-randomised controlled trial to assess the impact of mass vaccination with R21 on malaria transmission and morbidity

Rabies is a devastating zoonotic disease causing nearly 60,000 deaths globally each year. The disease causes Malawi an economic loss of 13 million USD and kills almost 500 people annually. Domestic dogs are the main reservoir for rabies and vaccinating over 70% of the dog population is the most efficient method to reduce its incidence in both humans and canines. However, achieving such coverages is often difficult and depend on many geospatial factors. Rural and pastoral regions are considered difficult to vaccinate efficiently due to low dog densities, and reports of campaigns spanning large
