Activity during mastication of periodontal mechanosensitive neurons of the trigeminal subnucleus oralis of the rabbit.

1. The activity of mechanosensitive neurons was examined before and during mastication. One hundred and seventy-eight neurons were recorded in the rostral parts of the trigeminal sensory nuclei of 20 rabbits anesthetized with urethan. Twenty-eight neurons received inputs from the periodontal mechanoreceptors, all on the ipsilateral side. Nineteen had receptive fields that were restricted to one tooth; 2 could be activated from more than 1 tooth, and 6 included parts of the mucosa. Only the latter were spontaneously active. 2. All periodontal neurons with a mandibular input responded to graded

Modulation of jaw movement patterns in response to different food textures during mastication in mice.

This exploratory study aimed to explore the key determinants of characteristic masticatory movements in mice focusing on the amount of vertical and lateral gape associated with condylar movement on both sides depending on different food textures. Jaw movements with six degrees of freedom were measured by means of a motion capture system using 13 Jcl:ICR mice. Pellets, cheese, and bananas were tested, and the relationship between food texture and jaw movement patterns was investigated. The mice showed two unique jaw movement trajectories. That is, the opening and closing paths were wide apart i

Three-dimensional analysis of facial soft-tissue movement during mastication in children with lip incompetence.

Lip incompetence is an esthetic orthodontic problem, but its functional relevance during mastication remains unclear. This study aimed to develop an objective system for assessing three-dimensional facial dynamics during mastication and to compare facial soft-tissue coordination and lip-closure force between individuals with and without lip incompetence. Thirty-nine children aged 6-12 years were classified into a lip-incompetence group (n = 16) and a control group (n = 23). Participants chewed gum unilaterally while 3D facial images were recorded. A homologous wire-mesh model was generated for

A critical size volumetric muscle loss model in mouse masseter with impaired mastication on nutrition.

Orofacial muscle defect due to congenital anomalies, tumour ablation or traumatic accident that exceeds endogenous regeneration capacity may lead to sustained deficits in masticatory function and nutrition intake. Functional recovery has always been the goal of muscle tissue repair, but currently, there is no suitable model for quantitative analyses of either functional consequences or treatment efficacy of orofacial muscle defect. This study proposed a critical size volumetric muscle loss (VML) model in mouse masseter with impaired mastication on nutrition. Full-thickness VML defects in diame

Ischemia of the parotid gland and adjacent muscles of mastication following middle meningeal artery embolization.

Middle meningeal artery (MMA) embolization is commonly performed as either a first-line or adjunct treatment for chronic subdural hematomas (cSDH). We present the case of a 59 year-old male patient who presented with right hemibody weakness and cognitive impairment and was diagnosed with left-sided cSDH. A left MMA embolization was performed due to the recurrent nature of the chronic subdural hemorrhage and the history of prior craniotomy. On postoperative day 1, the patient developed sudden onset left facial swelling and tenderness, and a contrast computed tomography (CT) of the neck revealed

Pasta Structure Affects Mastication, Bolus Properties, and Postprandial Glucose and Insulin Metabolism in Healthy Adults.

BACKGROUND: Structure and protein-starch interactions in pasta products can be responsible for lower postprandial glycemic responses compared with other cereal foods. OBJECTIVES: We tested the effect on postprandial glucose metabolism induced by 2 pasta products, couscous, and bread, through their structural changes during mastication and simulated gastric digestion. METHODS: Two randomized controlled trials (n = 30/trial) in healthy, normal-weight adults (mean BMI of 23.9 kg/m2 (study 1) and 23.0 kg/m2 (study 2)) evaluated postprandial glucose metabolism modulation to portions of durum whea

Study on the Mix Design of Mastic Flow for Filling Based on Deviation Coefficient Method.

To quantitatively evaluate the skeleton design of the MaFF method, this study addresses five dimensions: gradation control, test method, quantitative model, correction conversion, and design method. First, the deviation coefficient method is proposed based on the Talbot method. Unlike conventional design restricted to n = 0.3-0.7, this method takes the maximum density curve at n = 0.45 as the reference and enables flexible adjustment of Vag by controlling the 4.75 mm sieve passing rate. This provides a theoretical basis for discontinuous gradation design. Second, the wet mixing test is develop

Effect of mastication degree and eating rate on in vitro dynamic gastrointestinal digestion of rice.

The combined effect of mastication degree and eating speed on food digestion is still not clearly understood at present. This study investigated the effects of degree of crushing by mouth (strong, S or weak, W) and eating speed (high, H or low, L) on the in vitro gastrointestinal digestion of cooked Indica rice. Grain size distribution and confocal microscope obtained from volunteers showed that the bolus of S had smaller particles compared to W during dynamic gastric digestion using a model of artificial gastric digestion system (AGDS). Image scanning revealed that at the end of gastric diges

An unusual abscess formation in the masticator space after acupressure massage: a case report.

Clinical features of masticator-space abscess (MSA) are very similar to those of parotitis or temporomandibular disorder (TMD), making early differential diagnosis difficult. Local causes of MSA include nerve block anesthesia, infection after tooth extraction, and trauma to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ); the systemic cause is immunodeficiency. Odontogenic causes account for most etiologies, but there are also unusual causes of MSA. A 66-year-old male patient visited the emergency room (ER) presenting with left-side TMJ pain three days after receiving an acupressure massage. He was tentativ

Mastic alleviates allergic inflammation in asthmatic model mice by inhibiting recruitment of eosinophils.

The pathogenesis of allergic asthma is characterized by airway inflammation, eosinophilia, and airway hyperresponsiveness. In the present study, we investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of mastic, obtained from the stem and the leaves of Pistacia lentiscus trees, on allergic asthma. In an ovalbumin-induced mouse asthma model, mastic significantly inhibited eosinophilia, while reducing airway hyperresponsiveness and suppressing the production of inflammatory cytokines (IL-5 and IL-13) as well as chemokines (eotaxin, eotaxin2, and regulated upon activation, normal T-cell expressed and secre

Two cases of masticator space abscess initially diagnosed as temporomandibular joint disorder.

Diseases causing trismus or pain of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) include temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJD), trauma, tumors and an inflammation. This report describes two cases of masticator space abscesses causing trismus and TMJ pain, which were initially diagnosed as TMJD. The first case was a 62-year-old female suffering from trismus and right-TMJ pain without swelling or redness, which was diagnosed as TMJD with MRI (TMJ region) findings of bilateral anterior disc displacement without reduction. However, five days later the right-TMJ pain became more severe and MRI (maxillofaci

Mastication dyspraxia: a neurodevelopmental disorder reflecting disruption of the cerebellocerebral network involved in planned actions.

This paper reports the longitudinal clinical, neurocognitive, and neuroradiological findings in an adolescent patient with nonprogressive motor and cognitive disturbances consistent with a diagnosis of developmental coordination disorder (DCD). In addition to prototypical DCD, the development of mastication was severely impaired, while no evidence of swallowing apraxia, dysphagia, sensorimotor disturbances, abnormal tone, or impaired general cognition was found. He suffered from bronchopulmonary dysplasia and was ventilated as a newborn for 1.5 months. At the age of 3 months, a ventriculoperit
