The Autoimmune Profiles in the Etiopathogenesis of Granulomatous Lobular Mastitis.

OBJECTIVES: Granulomatous lobular mastitis (GLM) is a chronic breast inflammation with low remission and high recurrence. This study aimed to investigate GLM patients' autoimmune profiles and their correlation with GLM etiopathogenesis. METHODS: Samples from GLM patients and fibroadenoma (FA) controls admitted to Shuguang Hospital between July 2021 and July 2022 were analyzed. Patients (107 GLM, 73 FA) underwent humoral immunity (C3, C4, IgG, IgM, IgE and IgA), cellular immunity (CD3+CD4+ T cells, CD3+CD8+ T cells, regulatory T cells and CD4/CD8 ratio) and cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10,

Prevalence and treatment of camel mastitis in Afar, Ethiopia.

Subclinical mastitis is a significant health concern in lactating camels, impacting milk production and pastoral livelihoods. This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the prevalence of subclinical mastitis and document traditional treatment practices among pastoralists in the Afar region, Ethiopia. A total of 384 purposively selected lactating camels were screened using the California Mastitis Test (CMT), and structured interviews were conducted with camel owners. The overall prevalence of subclinical mastitis was 60.2% (231/384), with a quarter-level prevalence of 27.6%. The right hind q

The impact of cotrimoxazole in idiopathic granulomatous mastitis treatment.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a benign inflammatory breast disease, commonly presented with a sensitive breast lump and developing scars. Currently, there is no definitive treatment for IGM but Antibiotics, steroids, immunosuppressive drugs or a surgical treatments are the usual options. This case series aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of cotrimoxazole in treatment of IGM as there is no clinical consensus on the best and most widely acknowledged therapeutic management for IGM. CASE PRESENTATION: All IGM patients were treated by Cotrimoxazole (800

A rare case of granulomatous mastitis by Brucella species.

Granulomatous mastitis (GM) is a rare, chronic, benign inflammatory disease of the breast. Here, we present a rare case of GM caused by brucellosis and present the first review to compile the cases in the literature. The diagnosis was confirmed by the patient's serological and histopathological results. The patient was successfully treated with doxycycline+rifampicin combination therapy for six weeks. In conclusion, infectious agents, especially brucellosis, should be considered in the differential diagnosis of GM in endemic regions. Diagnostic methods, such as tissue culture and serological t

Alternatives to antibiotics for treatment of mastitis in dairy cows.

Mastitis is considered the costliest disease on dairy farms and also adversely affects animal welfare. As treatment (and to a lesser extent prevention) of mastitis rely heavily on antibiotics, there are increasing concerns in veterinary and human medicine regarding development of antimicrobial resistance. Furthermore, with genes conferring resistance being capable of transfer to heterologous strains, reducing resistance in strains of animal origin should have positive impacts on humans. This article briefly reviews potential roles of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), herbal medic

Diagnosis of Idiopathic Granulomatous Mastitis in a Sudanese Woman.

Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a relatively rare specific chronic inflammatory process of unknown etiology, that diagnostically overlaps with common breast pathologies in Sudan, namely breast cancer (BC) and tuberculous mastitis (TBM). We report the case of a 34-year-old female who presented with a 1-month history of a painful lump in the lower outer quadrant of her left breast. A tru-cut biopsy showed features of granulomatous inflammation suggestive of IGM. Four months later, she presented with similar features and fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) confirmed the presence of

[Infectious mastitis: a new solution for an old problem].

Mastitis is an inflammation of one or several mammal lobes accompanied or not by a mammary gland infection (WHO 2000). The most frequent etiology is infectious, and the highest prevalence period in women is breast-feeding time. The incidence varies from 2 to 33% according to different authors, being more frequent in primiparous women and during the early postpartum weeks. There are other breast inflammatory processes related etiologies, unrelated to breastfeeding, such as neoplasms or trauma to which no reference is made at this time, since the primary objective of this work is focused on infe

Management of mastitis and breast engorgement in breastfeeding women.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the best management approaches to mastitis management in breastfeeding women and heavy breast engorgement in the early postnatal period. METHODS: We compared various international guidelines and reviews on mastitis management in breastfeeding women and breast engorgement treatment. RESULTS: Effective milk removal is recommended as a first step in mastitis management. Active emptying of the breasts can prevent mastitis development in most cases. If it fails, antibiotics should be administered for 10-14 days with continuing breastfeeding. Russian guidelines recommend ant

Surgical treatment of neonatal mastitis by periareolar drainage.

PURPOSE: Neonatal mastitis is a rare but challenging problem that commonly appears within the first 8 weeks after birth. Abscess formation in an infant's breast can lead to acute complications and longterm dysfunction. To our knowledge, no publication focuses on surgical techniques and postoperative care to avoid breast scarring in neonates. We herein present our surgical approach by periareolar drainage to avoid this long term complications. METHODS: After reviewing the medical database of our hospital from 2002 to 2012, 11 cases (6 females and 5 males; 10 unilateral and 1 bilateral) of neon

The role of bacterial pathogens in coliform mastitis in sows.

Even in modern piglet production, mastitis and lactation failure in sows represent a considerable health problem post partum, affecting in its consequences both the sow and her piglets. Known as a multifactorial syndrome, Mastitis-Metritis-Agalactia (MMA) has been topic of several studies investigating possible influencing factors at farm and sow level in the recent past. However, there is a lack of current investigations on the causative pathogens, especially with advanced laboratory methods and with an adequate control group of healthy animals. Therefore, 1026 milk samples from coliform mast

Feasibility of surgical management in patients with granulomatous mastitis.

Granulomatous mastitis (GM) is a rare inflammatory breast disease of unknown etiology. Although it usually presents with sinus formation and abscesses, it may mimic the clinical characteristics of breast cancer. The aim of this study was to identify the clinical, radiologic, and pathologic characteristics of patients with GM and to show the results of surgical treatment in these patients. A chart review was performed for patients that were treated with a diagnosis of GM at the Breast Unit, Department of Surgery, Istanbul Medical Faculty, University of Istanbul, between September 1998 and Janua

Fluconazole for postpartum candidal mastitis and infant thrush.

This case report illustrates the difficulties inherent in treating candidal mastitis in lactating women and concurrent thrush in the breastfeeding baby. This mother's candidiasis vacillated from topical to ductal, depending on which medications were being used over the course of several months. Her baby's oral thrush was unique in that there were never any white plaques visible on his oral mucosa. Ultimately, both mother and child were treated simultaneously with oral fluconazole, with a relief of symptoms in both individuals.

Mammary duct ectasia and periductal mastitis in males.

Mammary duct ectasia/periductal mastitis is exceedingly rare in males. Ten cases have been reported in the literature, the last 2 cases were associated with Human immunodeficiency virus. The previously reported cases presented in females with blood stained discharge or subareolar inflammatory process. All cases required surgical treatment, 7 out of 10 cases underwent a form of mastectomy. To the best of our knowledge this disease entity was not reported in patients suffering from Behcets disease. This article described 2 new cases, one of them is a young man who had associated Behcets disease.

Granulomatous mastitis as presenting sign of Wegener's granulomatosis.

A case where a breast tumor was the initial manifestation of Wegener's granulomatosis is presented. Breast biopsy revealed granulomatous mastitis, and treatment with tuberculostatic drugs was started. Following an initial improvement the patient finally died. Postmortem, the diagnosis of generalised Wegener's granulomatosis was made. Although Wegener's granulomatosis is a very rare cause of granulomatous mastitis, it should be considered in the differential diagnosis. A brief outline of the literature is given.

Ibuprofen treatment of endotoxin-induced mastitis in cows.

Ibuprofen treatment was compared with saline solution treatment in an endotoxin-induced experimental model of bovine mastitis. Acute mastitis was induced in healthy lactating Holstein cows (n = 12) by intramammary inoculation of 1 mg of Escherichia coli 026:B6 lipopolysaccharide in a single quarter per cow. Cows were assigned at random to ibuprofen (25 mg/kg of body weight, IV, n = 6) or 0.9% sodium chloride solution control (1.25 ml/kg, IV, n = 6) treatment groups. Ibuprofen or saline solution was administered once, 2 hours after endotoxin administration. The clinical course of endotoxin-indu
