Crystalline mate strategy for berberine hydrochloride: solvent-polarity-tuned co-crystallization.

Single-crystal X-ray diffraction is one of the most reliable techniques for elucidating the molecular structures, while it requires high-quality single crystals. The crystalline mate (CM) strategy has recently emerged as an effective method to induce rapid and selective co-crystallization. Here, we demonstrate that this strategy can be reliably extended to ionic systems using the neutral trinuclear silver pyrazolate complex Ag3Pz3 as a crystallization mate. By regulating solvent polarity, two co-crystals of silver pyrazolate berberine hydrochloride Ag3Pz3·BCl, SF (sandwich form) and NSF (non-s

Testing local-scale panmixia provides insights into the cryptic ecology, evolution, and epidemiology of metazoan animal parasites.

When every individual has an equal chance of mating with other individuals, the population is classified as panmictic. Amongst metazoan parasites of animals, local-scale panmixia can be disrupted due to not only non-random mating, but also non-random transmission among individual hosts of a single host population or non-random transmission among sympatric host species. Population genetics theory and analyses can be used to test the null hypothesis of panmixia and thus, allow one to draw inferences about parasite population dynamics that are difficult to observe directly. We provide an outline

Artificial insemination increases the probability of a male calf in dairy and beef cattle.

The objective of this study was to determine if natural mating affected secondary sex ratio. Data consisting of 642,401 calving records from the Irish national database, during the years 2002-2005, were used in the analysis. Factors affecting the logit of the probability of a male calf being born were determined using multiple regression generalised estimating equations with sire of the calf included as a repeated effect. Month of the year at calving, sex of the previous calf born within dam, breed of service sire, parity of dam and type of mating (i.e., natural or artificial insemination) sig

External craniofacial features, body size, and renal morphology in prenatal brachyrrhine mice.

The Brachyrrhine (Br) semidominant mouse mutant provides a useful model for studying factors responsible for midfacial hypoplasia. In order to determine early morphogenetic events responsible for midfacial hypoplasia in these mice, prenatal mutants must be differentiated from nonaffected littermates. The purpose of this study was to determine whether prenatal offspring from Br matings could be separated morphologically into groups of normal or midfacially deficient embryos. Thirty embryos resulting from Br matings were collected between day 15 and birth (Theiler stages 23-27). Qualitative obse

TH1/TH2,3 imbalance due to cytokine-producing NK, gammadelta T and NK-gammadelta T cells in murine pregnancy decidua in success or failure of pregnancy.

PROBLEM: Recurrent spontaneous abortion in DBA/2-mated CBA/J mice has been attributed to the production of Th1 cytokines (tumor necrosis factor [TNF]-alpha and interferon [IFN]-gamma) by asialoGM1+ natural killer (NK) cells and Vgamma1.1delta6.3+ T cells that infiltrate decidua by day 6.5, during the peri-implantation period. Abortions can be prevented by a second population of Vgamma1.1delta6.3 cells, which infiltrate on day 8.5 of gestation, and produce the Th2 cytokine interleukin (IL)-10 and Th3 cytokine transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta2. In low abortion rate immunocompetent mice, mos

A longitudinal study of reproductive performance and management of 82 dairy herds in the Waikato region with differing policies on the routine use of induction of parturition.

AIMS: To describe the reproductive performance and management practices over three lactations in dairy herds that had different policies on the routine use of induction of parturition; to describe any change in outcomes in herds that ceased inductions during the study period; and to investigate other herd-level factors associated with reproductive performance. METHODS: From 2002 to 2004 inclusive, a longitudinal study was undertaken in 82 herds in the Waikato region of New Zealand. The main outcome variables were the percentage of cows pregnant after 8 weeks of mating (8-week in-calf rate) an

Effect of Exposure to Seminal Plasma Through Natural Mating in Cattle on Conceptus Length and Gene Expression.

A growing body of evidence suggests that paternal factors have an impact on offspring development. These studies have been mainly carried out in mice, where seminal plasma (SP) has been shown to regulate endometrial gene expression and impact embryo development and subsequent offspring health. In cattle, infusion of SP into the uterus also induces changes in endometrial gene expression, however, evidence for an effect of SP on early embryo development is lacking. In addition, during natural mating, the bull ejaculates in the vagina; hence, it is not clear whether any SP reaches the uterus in t

No pre-zygotic isolation mechanisms between Schistosoma haematobium and Schistosoma bovis parasites: From mating interactions to differential gene expression.

Species usually develop reproductive isolation mechanisms allowing them to avoid interbreeding. These preventive barriers can act before reproduction, "pre-zygotic barriers", or after reproduction, "post-zygotic barriers". Pre-zygotic barriers prevent unfavourable mating, while post-zygotic barriers determine the viability and selective success of the hybrid offspring. Hybridization in parasites and the underlying reproductive isolation mechanisms maintaining their genetic integrity have been overlooked. Using an integrated approach this work aims to quantify the relative importance of pre-zyg

Post-mating inflammatory responses of the uterus.

This review attempts to summarize the current knowledge on uterine inflammatory response after mating in horses, pigs and cattle. Post-mating endometritis has been extensively studied in horses as it has been considered to cause infertility. The inflammation is known to occur also in cattle, but it has not been investigated to a similar extent. There are a number of publications about mechanisms of post-mating uterine inflammation in pigs, which seem to resemble those in horses. The major focus of this review is the horse, but relevant literature is presented also on swine and cattle. Spermato

Molecular and genetic characterization of a serotype A MATa Cryptococcus neoformans isolate.

Cryptococcus neoformans comprises two varieties (neoformans and gattii) and four serotypes (A, B, C and D). Fertile isolates of both mating types have been identified in serotypes B, C and D; however, a fertile serotype A MATa strain has not been confirmed, although serotype A MATalpha strains will mate with serotype D MATa strains. Preliminary analysis of a recent Italian environmental isolate (IUM 96-2828) suggested that this strain was haploid, serotype A and MATa. In this study, IUM 96-2828 has been characterized in detail. A mating reaction between IUM 96-2828 and H99 (serotype A MATalpha

Concurrence of von Willebrand's disease and hemophilia A: implications for carrier detection and prevalence.

Five families with concurrent von Willebrand's disease (VWD) and classic hemophilia (hemophilia A) are described. Three were ascertained through women undergoing hemophilia carrier testing, one through an obligate carrier who also has VWD, and one through the affected father of a hemophiliac. The VWD probands exhibited Type I VWD with reduced Factor VIII-related antigen (VIIIR:Ag) and/or von Willebrand factor on more than one occasion, normal VIIIR:Ag on crossed immunoelectrophoresis, and mild symptoms. No male had both disorders, but two obligate hemophilia carriers also had VWD. Neither was

The Mating Type (MAT) and Virulence of Sporothrix schenckii sensu stricto Isolates Maintained in Culture Collection.

In an attempt to determine the mating type of different Sporothrix schenckii sensu stricto isolates that remained viable after a long period of preservation in a culture collection and to correlate them with the degree of virulence/pathogenicity, a PCR technique using primers designed for the sequences of MAT1-1-1 and MAT1-2-1 genes and a murine experimental model were used. The results showed that there was no correlation between the mating type and virulence among the isolates. Furthermore, different degrees of virulence/pathogenicity, ranging from high to low, were found among them based on

A Multicenter Comparative Study of Impulse Control Disorder in Latin American Patients With Parkinson Disease.

OBJECTIVES: Impulse control disorder (ICD) is a common adverse effect in patients with Parkinson disease who receive dopamine agonists; however, other factors are involved in its manifestations. To study the frequency and factors involved in the development of this adverse effect in a Latin American population, we conducted a cross-sectional multicenter study. METHODS: Two hundred fifty-five patients in 3 Latin American centers were evaluated by examination and application of scales (Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale, Questionnaire for Impulsive-Compulsive Disorders in Parkinson's Dise

Pathogenic bacteria modulate pheromone response to promote mating.

Pathogens generate ubiquitous selective pressures and host-pathogen interactions alter social behaviours in many animals1-4. However, very little is known about the neuronal mechanisms underlying pathogen-induced changes in social behaviour. Here we show that in adult Caenorhabditis elegans hermaphrodites, exposure to a bacterial pathogen (Pseudomonas aeruginosa) modulates sensory responses to pheromones by inducing the expression of the chemoreceptor STR-44 to promote mating. Under standard conditions, C. elegans hermaphrodites avoid a mixture of ascaroside pheromones to facilitate dispersal5

Fish Oil Diet during Pre-mating, Gestation, and Lactation in Adult Offspring Rats on Cancer Cachexia Prevention.

SCOPE: Nutritional supplementation of the maternal diet can modify the cancer susceptibility in adult offspring. Therefore, the authors evaluate the effects of a fish-oil diet administered to a long-term, during pre-mating, gestation, and lactation, in reducing cancer-cachexia damages in adult Walker-256 tumor-bearing offspring. METHODS AND RESULTS: Female rats receive control or fish oil diet during pre-mating, gestation, and lactation. After weaning, male offspring are fed the control diet until adulthood and distributed in (C) control adult-offspring; (W) adult tumor-bearing offspring; (OC

Is seminal nerve growth factor-induced luteinizing hormone release in camelids mediated at the hypothalamus?

IN BRIEF: Seminal nerve growth factor induces ovulation in camelids by influencing the secretion of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) into the portal vessels of the pituitary gland. We show that the nerve growth factor-induced release of GnRH is not mediated directly through interaction with hypothalamic neurons. ABSTRACT: Ovulation in camelids is triggered by seminal nerve growth factor (NGF). The mechanism of action of NGF appears to occur via the central nervous system. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that NGF acts in the hypothalamus to induce GnRH release. To determine if NG

Age-related changes in androgen receptor levels in cranial nerve nuclei of male rats.

Sensory and motor events are important for mating, and several cranial nerve nuclei mediating these events contain androgen receptors (AR). Since mating behavior declines with age, we tested whether AR binding is decreased in cranial nerve nuclei of old male rats. Cytosol and cell nuclear androgen receptor (AR) binding was assessed in the cochlear, hypoglossal and facial nuclei in young (4 months) and old (20 months) male Fischer 344 rats. For comparison with other neural and non-neural tissue, AR binding in combined hypothalamus, preoptic area and amygdala (HPA), and muscle tissue from tongue

Adoptive transfer of pregnancy-induced CD4+CD25+ regulatory T cells reverses the increase in abortion rate caused by interleukin 17 in the CBA/JxBALB/c mouse model.

STUDY QUESTION: Could adoptive transfer of pregnancy-induced CD4+CD25+ regulatory T cells (Tregs) reverse the increase in abortion rate caused by interleukin 17 (IL-17) in the CBA/J × BALB/c mouse model? SUMMARY ANSWER: The effects of exogenous IL-17 on increased abortion rate, as well as decreased transforming growth factor (TGF)-β and IL-10 expression, are reversed by a pre-mating transfusion of Tregs in a mouse model of pregnancy. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: IL-17 is a pro-inflammatory cytokine mainly expressed by T helper 17 cells, and plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of endometriosis

Loss of multidrug and toxin extrusion 1 (MATE1) is associated with metformin-induced lactic acidosis.

BACKGROUNDS AND PURPOSE: Lactic acidosis is a fatal adverse effect of metformin, but the risk factor remains unclear. Multidrug and toxin extrusion 1 (MATE1) is expressed in the luminal membrane of the kidney and liver. MATE1 was revealed to be responsible for the tubular and biliary secretion of metformin. Therefore, some MATE polymorphisms, that cause it to function abnormally, are hypothesized to induce lactic acidosis. The purpose of this study is to clarify the association between MATE dysfunction and metformin-induced lactic acidosis. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Blood lactate, pH and bicarbo

Male Reproductive Morphology Across Latitudinal Clines and Under Long-Term Female Sex-Ratio Bias.

SynopsisRecent work in evolutionary ecology has capitalized on the species-specific, rapidly evolving nature of male reproductive traits, but it is unclear how the strength of sexual selection mechanisms, such as female choice and intersexual conflict, changes with ecological factors-shifts in latitude, elevation, and sex-ratio. Marginal habitats, such as those found at high elevation or latitude, might be expected to exert energetic hardships on males such that they do not invest heavily in reproductive structures. Conversely, males in these habitats may adapt to limited breeding opportunitie
