[A Rare Case of Sclerosing Odontogenic Carcinoma of the Maxilla].

INTRODUCTION: Sclerosing odontogenic carcinoma(SOC)is a rare malignancy first reported by Koutlas in 2008 and was classified as an odontogenic carcinoma according to the World Health Organization(WHO)classification in 2017. In this report, we describe a rare case of SOC in the maxilla of a patient who underwent radical tumor resection via partial maxillectomy and immediate reconstruction using an ulnar forearm flap. CASE: A 55-year-old woman was referred to our department with the chief complaint of swelling of the right maxillary gingiva. Initial examination revealed swelling of the right ma

Embolization for Arteriovenous Malformations in the Maxilla With Coils and Ethanol.

PURPOSE: Maxillary arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are uncommon, limiting comprehensive research into standard treatment protocols. This study evaluated the management, outcomes, and clinical safety of embolization techniques for maxillary AVMs, using coils and ethanol. METHODS: In this retrospective case series, we enrolled a sample of patients with maxillary AVMs treated with embolization using coils with or without ethanol between June 2017 and July 2019. Coils were super-selectively placed into the nidus and dominant outflow vein to decrease the flow of the arteriovenous fistulas. Abso

Osteoradionecrosis of the Maxilla: Conservative Management and Reconstructive Considerations.

The implementation of radiotherapy in the multimodal treatment of advanced head and neck cancer has greatly improved survival rates. In some patients, however, this benefit comes at the potential expense of the tissue surrounding the primary site of malignancy. Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the facial bones, in particular the maxilla, is a debilitating complication of radiation therapy. Exposure to ionizing radiation results in devitalization of underlying bone with necrosis of adjacent soft tissue. Controversy surrounding appropriate early intervention in ORN persists and no consensus for clini

Medication-related osteonecrosis (MRONJ) of the mandible and maxilla.

In 2003, Marx reported the first case of osteonecrosis of the jaw in 36 cases related to zoledronic acid or pamidronate. Painful bone exposure in the mandible or maxilla unresponsive to medical or surgical management was observed. In 2014, the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons proposed the term 'medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw' (MRONJ). However, a non-exposed variant may also occur. MRONJ can lead to debilitating clinical sequelae with limited treatment options. We present the case of a 73-year-old woman with metastatic breast cancer and MRONJ of her mandible

Coexistence of Antrochoanal Polyp and Fibrous Dysplasia in the Maxilla.

The authors report an unusual case of coexistence of antrochoanal polyp (ACP) and fibrous dysplasia (FD) in the maxilla. To the best of our knowledge, this condition has never been reported in the literature. The complete removal of the ACP through endoscopic sinus surgery was attained and FD was ultimately diagnosed by histopathological examination. It is hypothesized that chronic inflammation or irritation due to FD has an effect on the occurrence of ACP.

Leiomyosarcoma of maxilla: a case report with review of literature.

One challenging feature of head and neck pathology is that a dizzying array of spindle cell lesions occurs here which ranges all the way from reactive, very aggressive forms to malignant lesions. Leiomyosarcoma is one such malignant tumour of mesenchymal origin exhibiting smooth muscle differentiation; presenting generally nonspecific signs and symptoms. Here we present a case of leiomyosarcoma in a 21 year old female patient associated with single reddish pink swelling present in the posterior right maxillary tuberosity region with moderate facial asymmetry. On histopathological analysis, all

Gingival leiomyomatous hamartoma of the maxilla: a rare entity.

Hamartoma is a tumour-like malformation appearing as a focal overgrowth of normal cells. Leiomyomatous hamartomas (LHs) are rare in the oral cavity and commonly seen in the Japanese and less than 40 cases have been reported in the Japanese and English literature. The clinical differential diagnoses are irritational (traumatic) fibroma and congenital epulis. It has to be differentiated histopathologically from its neoplastic counterparts and mesenchymomas. Hence, we report such a case of LHs, which presented as a sessile gingival growth occurring in the midline in a 15-year-old girl. The final

Erupted complex odontoma of the posterior maxilla: A rarity.

Complex odontomas, hamartomas of aborted tooth development, mainly occur in posterior part of the mandible and rarely erupt into the oral cavity. The spontaneous eruption may be associated with pain, inflammation of adjacent soft tissues or recurrent infection. The present case of complex odontoma is of particular interest due to its apparent eruption in the maxillary posterior segment, its association with agenesis of the second molar and impacted third molar; with the lesion being completely asymptomatic.

Malignant myoepithelioma of the maxilla posing a diagnostic dilemma.

Malignant myoepithelioma is an extremely rare tumor of the salivary glands. Myoepitheliomas make up less than 1% of all salivary gland tumors. We report of a case of malignant myoepithelioma of the upper jaw in a 55-year old man. The tumor primarily arose from the maxillary sinus and secondarily involved the palate. A diagnosis of pleomorphic adenoma was interpreted, following fine needle aspiration cytology and spindle cell tumor, following incision biopsy with a dilemma. The surgery consisted of subtotal maxillectomy preserving the infra orbital rim and posterior wall of the maxillary sinus,

Impacted knife injury of the orbit, maxilla and oropharynx.

Injuries in the maxillofacial region with knife in situ are not common. We report a rare case with knife impacted in the orbit, maxilla and soft palate. Removal was possible only by surgical intervention. Despite the deep penetration, the knife had not injured major structures and hence there was no untoward complication in the outcome.

Is torus palatinus a feature of a well-developed maxilla?

Torus palatinus (TP) is an exostosis of the hard palate. The biologic significance of TP is unknown. Our hypothesis was that the presence of a TP reflects the development of the maxilla. It has been proven that tooth agenesis is associated with small maxillary size. We investigated whether there is a relationship between maxillary third molar agenesis and the presence or absence of TP. The study was carried out on 253 Turkish patients. It showed a lower prevalence of third molar agenesis in female subjects with TP (P < 0.001). This study provides indirect evidence that development of the maxil

[Fourth molars in the maxilla and mandible--a rare phenomenon].

The occurrence of supernumerary teeth is not uncommon. The preferred location of the supernumerary teeth is in the maxilla, mostly incisors, followed by the molars. Supernumerary molars are divided into two types, depending on their location: distomolars and paramolars. Distomolars are supernumerary teeth that are distal to the third molars, while paramolars are supernumerary teeth on the side of the molars. The paper describes an unusual case of four distomolars. The two maxillary distomolars were unerupted, in a vertical position distal to the third molars. Their morphology was normal but th

[Dental implantation at the maxilla with autologous bone transplantation].

In the Department of Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery of County Hospital of Szentes, different types of bone losses of the maxillary alveolar ridge have been treated since 1 March, 1990. The applied surgical procedures were the following: 1. 394 patients were treated with GBR technique and 567 DenTi implants were inserted for these patients. 2. In 47 cases autogenous bone grafts were harvested from mandibular cortica and 78 DenTi implants were placed. Altogether 14 implants were lost; the success rate was 97.81% in the period between 1 March, 1990 and 31 January, 2001. 3. The severely resorbed m

Brown tumor of the maxilla associated with primary hyperparathyroidism.

Brown tumors represent the terminal stage of the remodeling processes during primary or secondary hyperparathyroidism. During the last three decades primary hyperparathyroidism has been recognized much more commonly and the increase has generally been attributed to the routine determination of calcium by new automated methods and the advent of new and more objective parathyroid hormone radioimmunoassay techniques. Early diagnosis and successful treatment of the disease have made clinical evidence of bone disease uncommon. While, the mandible is the most frequently involved bone in the head and
