Usefulness of arterial spin labeling MR angiography as preprocedural mapping for the intra-arterial chemotherapy in patients with maxillary sinus cancer: A case report.

Arterial spin labeling (ASL) magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) (ASL-MRA) is a newly developed method that can visualize small arteries, particularly those running tortuously and inferiorly at slow flow rates. It provides excellent visualization of the external carotid artery system, with superior performance in visualizing the middle meningeal artery (MMA) compared to that of computed tomography angiography (CTA). Here, we report a case of maxillary sinus carcinoma in which ASL-MRA revealed an ipsilateral ophthalmic artery originating from the MMA that was not visualized on CTA. Volume rend

Verification of posterior superior alveolar artery distribution in lateral wall of maxillary sinus by location and defect pattern.

OBJECTIVE: Maxillary sinus augmentation is used when performing implant treatment in the maxillary molar region with inadequate bone height. Posterior superior alveolar artery (PSAA) is the branch of the maxillary artery that supplies the lateral sinus wall and sinus membrane. When performing an osteotomy via lateral approach, however, damage to the PSAA can occur, because it runs inside the lateral wall of the maxillary sinus, causing hemorrhage and hampering surgery. The objective of the present study was to compare the defect patterns with the distances from the alveolar crest and sinus flo

Location of posterior superior alveolar artery and evaluation of maxillary sinus anatomy with computerized tomography: a clinical study.

OBJECTIVES: Knowledge and evaluation of the maxillary sinus anatomy before sinus augmentation are essential for avoiding surgical complications. Posterior superior alveolar artery (PSAA) is the branch of maxillary artery that supplies lateral sinus wall and overlying membrane. The aims of this study were to examine the prevalence, diameter, and location of the PSAA and its relationship to the alveolar ridge and to study the prevalence of the sinus pathology and septum using computerized tomography (CT) scans. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and twenty-one CT scans (242 sinuses) from patien

Ruptured pseudoaneurysm of the internal maxillary artery complicating CT-guided fine-needle aspiration in an irradiated, surgical bed.

BACKGROUND: CT-guided fine-needle aspiration (FNA) is a safe procedure, but major complications can occur rarely. Pseudoaneurysm rupture in the head and neck region following CT-guided FNA is an emergency that can result in life-threatening hemorrhage. This case emphasizes the salient risk factors for pseudoaneurysm formation and rupture in the head and neck region following CT-guided FNA. METHODS: A patient was seen with oral and facial hemorrhage as a result of a ruptured pseudoaneurysm 11 weeks following CT-guided FNA in a previously irradiated surgical bed. RESULTS: The patient was treat

Assessment and localization of the posterior superior alveolar artery in lateral window approach for maxillary sinus floor elevation.

BACKGROUND: Maxillary sinus (MS) floor elevation using the lateral window approach is a predictable technique for bone augmentation in the posterior maxilla. However, injury to the posterior superior alveolar artery (PSAA) during osteotomy can result in significant intraoperative bleeding and compromise surgical visibility. This study aimed to evaluate the presence, anatomical location, and vertical distance of the PSAA using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and to analyze its relationship with the vertical position of the simulated lateral window relative to the sinus floor, relevant to s

Proximity of the middle meningeal artery and maxillary artery to the mandibular head and mandibular neck as revealed by three-dimensional time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography.

PURPOSE: The close topographic relationship between vascular and osseous structures in the condylar and subcondylar region and marked variability in the arterial course has been revealed by both imaging and cadaveric studies. This study aimed to verify the previously published information in a large sample and to determine a safe surgical region. METHODS: We analyzed the three-dimensional time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography images of 300 individuals. RESULTS: The mean distance between the middle meningeal artery and the apex of the condyle or the most medial point of the condyle wa

Artery of the Superior Orbital Fissure: An Undescribed Branch from the Pterygopalatine Segment of the Maxillary Artery to the Orbital Apex Connecting with the Anteromedial Branch of the Inferolateral Trunk.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Some branches of the internal maxillary artery have anastomoses with the inferolateral trunk that are important as intracranial-extracranial collateral pathways and as dangerous anastomoses for transarterial embolization of these branches. We present here an undescribed branch potentially anastomosing with the anteromedial branch of the inferolateral trunk, which is provisionally named the artery of the superior orbital fissure, defined as an arterial branch from the pterygopalatine segment of the maxillary artery to the orbital apex at the superior orbital fissure. Intra-arterial chemoradiation therapy with weekly low-dose cisplatin for squamous cell carcinoma of the maxillary sinus.

A new intra-arterial chemoradiation regimen that involves infusing low-dose cisplatin in combination with definitive irradiation was used in 36 patients diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the maxillary sinus. The safety and therapeutic efficacy of this regimen were reviewed retrospectively. An intra-arterial catheter was inserted in a retrograde manner into the target artery via the superficial temporal artery or occipital artery. Intra-arterial infusion was performed using cisplatin at a dose of 20-50mg/m(2) per week for 6-8 weeks. At the same time, sodium thiosulphate was infused as a

Localization of the Internal Maxillary Artery for Extracranial-to-Intracranial Bypass through the Middle Cranial Fossa: A Cadaveric Study.

The internal maxillary artery (IMAX) is a promising arterial pedicle to function as a donor vessel for extracranial-to-intracranial (EC-IC) bypass procedures. The access to the IMAX through the anterior portion of the middle cranial fossa floor allows a much shorter interposition graft to be used to create a bypass to the ipsilateral middle cerebral artery and prevents a second incision in the neck. One of the challenges of this technique, however, is the difficulty to find the IMAX through an intracranial approach. The purpose of this cadaveric study is to establish a reliable method to local

Fungal Malignant Otitis Externa Involves a Cascade of Complications Culminating in Pseudoaneurysm of Internal Maxillary Artery: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Pseudomonal infection is the most common cause of malignant otitis externa (MOE), which typically affects elderly diabetic patients. Fungi are a rare cause of MOE. MOE can be life-threatening if not recognized and treated promptly. It can result in a wide spectrum of complications, including skull-base osteomyelitis, cranial nerve palsy, cerebral venous thrombosis, and brain abscess. Pseudoaneurysm formation of the intracranial vessels is a life-threatening complication of MOE that is seldom reported in the literature. CASE REPORT We report the case of a 66-year-old diabetic man wit
